Zuiderdam turns round to search for person overboard from another ship

I’m on the Zuiderdam right now; we were scheduled to dock in St. John’s, Newfoundland, this morning at 11am. At 8:15am, the Captain announced that two hours earlier, we had turned around per the Canadian Coast Guard to participate in the search for a person overboard from another vessel, and that we were still about two hours away from the scene.

It is sunny out, the seas are relatively calm, but the air temperature is in the 50s and these are cold waters. My prayers for that person.

We’re on board as well and wondered why the sun was shining on the starboard side when we woke up. So the Captain didn’t specify what kind or size of ship this happened on, just said the call came at 615 and we were about 60 nm from the area. We’re assuming it wasn’t someone from the Zuiderdam although from the route map on the TV we do seem to be retracing our own route. He had the pedal to the metal at 21 knots but feels like we’re slowing down.

Saying prayers that it’s a rescue, not a recovery.

Captain is on PA just now... still about 20 minutes to last known location of this person. He said there is another ship out here with us (maybe AIDALuna, who is scheduled for St. John’s today, too but we haven’t seen her yet) as well as a helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft. We will be doing parallel sweeps as part of protocol.

Latest update - only vessel we see is AIDALuna who is searching opposite us. In the air we’ve got a fixed wing jet plus two helicopters. Small white caps now plus glaring sun definitely make it harder to spot things on the surface. We still don’t know from what vessel this person went missing.

Very sad. Since no one has posted from Zuiderdam for a while, I wonder if the ship is still searching or has resumed her planned itinerary.

We began the search pattern at 10:15am local time and are still searching (11:30am), as is the AIDA Luna. I haven’t seen the helicopter or plane in a while, but they may be in a different grid.

Captain just confirmed that the person is missing from the AIDALuna, at the moment it’s just us and them out here continuing to search, and that the aircraft have all gone back to refuel and will rejoin us out here shortly. We have not been released by the Coast Guard yet and he doesn’t know anything further.

No he is not found yet. Many people make extreme jokes about him, as there are many haters that don‘t like him. He has been mobbed a lot, very sad...

Unless it’s the middle of the night, the internet on board the Zuiderdam has been so slow on most days as to be nearly useless or at least exceedingly frustrating.

Here’s a story in English about the missing passenger.
