New airline rules

ISLAND DIVA

Sadly Suse, that is a myth, which the current Secretary for Homeland Security can't keep straight, but a myth nonetheless.

From the 9/11 Commission findings.

Scott.

Well, sorry about that. Why did I keep reading that, then? Or am I losing my mind? Please don't answer that last question; I know I lost my mind some time ago. When I had kids, I think.:)

Thanks for the info.

These severe restrictions are not mentioned by British Airways for flights to the US:

Additional security measures for US flights

Summary

Following the recent introduction of revised security arrangements for all customers travelling into the USA, British Airways is clarifying its hand baggage policy for customers travelling INTO the USA, including those who are transferring onto flights to the USA.

Customers travelling in our World Traveller and World Traveller Plus economy cabins to the USA from Heathrow and Gatwick will continue to take only ONE ITEM OF HAND LUGGAGE.

Customers travelling in our Club World and First cabin to the USA from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City are now able to take the normal two bag hand luggage allowance.

All customers are advised to check-in as normal.

Customers travelling to destinations outside the United States or from the United States are not affected.

Different countries are interpreting the new TSA directives differently apparently. It will take a while to sort it all out and hopefully for the better.

In the UK, one traveller notes she could take a carry-on and a purse and a laptop, but the purse and the laptop had to fit in the carry-on. Canada allows the laptop separately, but a smaller bag.

Go figure.

So this means people in first class who can take more than one carry on are more honest then the cheaper seat people? Stupid.

When 78.9% of your exports go to a single country (the US), Canadians have to be pretty, uh amenable, as to the whims of that country. We aren't quite America's b!tch, but some days it certainly seems like we are. :-) Scott.

Sapp; there is a great & moving book out, I've read it after picking it up in Halifax last summer, entitled "Fifteen Days" by Canadian author Christie Blatchford. It details her time spend "in country" in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan in 2006 with members of the Canadian Battle Group (1st + 2nd Bat, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from Edmonton, Alberta and the 1st Royal Canadian Horse Artillery from Shilo, Manitoba).

I would hope that most Americans realize that many of our allies, including you Canadians and those from my former home country, the Dutch, are fighting this war on terrorism alongside us in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of those brave men and women have lost their lives doing it. A sacrifice we should never forget! My hat goes off to all of them!

Thank you Copper. I will look for that book next time I am uptown.

Maybe I sounded a little harsh but it breaks my heart every time I watch the news and watch another body (or bodies) being unloaded in Trenton.

It is a very moving sight to watch the trip from Trenton to Toronto, where thousands of people turn out and line the overpasses for the entire route. Police and fire from every town along the way are there as well. That is done for every soldier who comes back in a body bag. If I lived closer, I would be among those who turn out.

I think this link says it all

Yes, it did, thanks! Brought tears to my eyes!

I had the honor and priviledge to participate in the escort for one of our local boys, Private First Class Joe Anzack, Jr. in June 2007. All our streets along the procession route were filled with people - I will never forget that!

It means so much to the families to know that people care doesn't it?

As I write this I am watching two Canadian warships sail out of Halifax Harbour enroute to Haiti. (watching on TV of course) They will be meeting up with American ships in Haiti to cooperate in the relief effort.

It sort of puts not being allowed a carry-on in perspective doesn't it? In the grand scheme of things we really have very petty complaints on this board (me included). I have yet to read a life altering or shattering complaint. Think about it.

Scott,

Thank you for attempting to keep this discussion accurate and pleasant.

I think the majority of posters are trying to do the same.

I have to ask though. Did you scream ( just a bit??) when it was said that some of the 911 bombers came from Canada?

Copper, a big thank you to you too.

Au plaisir. And to answer your question, not really. While I am not a great Trudeau fan, he made the very interesting observation about being America's neighbour that is somewhat a propos.

"Americans should never underestimate the constant pressure on Canada which the mere presence of the United States has produced. We're different people from you and we're different people because of you. Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is effected by every twitch and grunt. It should not therefore be expected that this kind of nation, this Canada, should project itself as a mirror image of the United States."

In his present condition, PET would be a better PM than the current occupant of that esteemed office.

I wondered when his name would be brought up.:)

that I thought that the terrorists traveled thru Canada. I knew absolutely, and everyone else does too, that they were not Canadians. We all knew they were from elsewhere. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear.

It is a myth that the 911 terrorists travelled through Canada-----a fact that the US gov't has admitted.
