Cabin Safes

We are sailing on the Rotterdam next month. Although we have sailed frequently on other HAL ships, it's been several years since sailing on the Rotterdam. The last time we were on the Rotterdam, the cabin safes were not the digitally-coded type where you create your own numerical PIN code to open and close the safe, but were of a type that required you to swipe a magnetic card (NOT the cabin room key) in order to lock or unlock the safe.

Does anyone know if the Rotterdam's cabin safes have been updated to the PIN-coded ones? Or if the older model is still in the room? I used to take old/expired Las Vegas casino slot machine cards with magnetic strips to use on the older HAL safes. I'm hoping the safes on the Rotterdam got replaced during the last refurbishment.

Did a search and found this post. This is the exact question I have. As this will be our first time on a HAL ship, I am wondering also if the room safes on the Zuiderdam uses a 4 digit pin code instead of a card with a magnetic strip.

Thank you! and Thanks for the photo. It looks pretty similar to the safe on Princess, the closet looks pretty small though, I hope I can fit my clothes in there:eek:

you won't have any problem. Closets on HAL are more than ample IMO:)

I'm curious as to the amount of interior space in the safe and am having a bit of difficulty gauging it from the picture. We'll be on Zaandam. Is it similar to a standard hotel room safe? I presume it'll hold cell phones, wallets, small jewelry pouches, etc. What about an iPad and a small camera?

Taz, Appears same size as Vista and Signature Class safes that have been in our staterooms and held all of what you mentioned and still had room for a bit more, such as my Kobo e-Reader and a small netbook (computer).

The Zaandam safe will hold what you describe. It will not hold a large jewelry case, although the contents of the case could fit. The opening is just too small to get larger things, like a netbook, through.

When it's time to empty the safe, take a very close look that you've retrieved everything. Use a flashlight, as it's pretty dark in there.

The safes on the Signature class ships are significantly larger than the safes on the other ships.

What about an iPad and a small camera?
On the Noordam (which has the standard size safe for any but Signature ships) the door opening is 10" wide by 6.75" high, and the safe is 8" deep. Will an iPad fit that?

After putting a pair of earrings into the safe and not back in the case, I came home with only one earring. They were my favorites, so now, I actually put my jewelry in plastic baggies and am very careful to store what I wore for the night back into the bag. I like the baggies because I can see what's in them. A lesson learned.

I might need to take it out of it's case, but it should slide in. Apple says the iPad is 9.5" x 7.3". Our I could just leave it home and make do with music on my iPod and only checking email from my Crackberry when on land.

Last cruise I took my netbook. It was a pain to put it in and out. So, I asked the concierge if it was safe to leave it out. The reply was absolutely as long as we didn't leave our door open when we were away. (Translation you can trust the crew). So, If you want to take your IPad - go ahead.

I left my net book out on the desk for the entire 20 day cruise. ;)

It sounds to me like it should fit in the safe, but if it doesn't, and you feel uncomfortable about leaving it out, you could get some "medium" security by putting it the locking top drawer of a nightstand.

We just leave our netbook on the desk except when we're going ashore for the entire day, and then we just put it out of sight somewhere.

Zaandam safes have been updated, and are a tad bigger.

You should get all that in, except may be the IPad.

Locking is different. When you lock the safe for the first time ANY card with a magnetic strip will lock it, however that will be the ONLY card to unlock it. While every couple have two 'keys' only ONE will unlock the safe!

Final tip, while in the cabin I leave the keycard on the shelf ABOVE the safe.

Don't leave it in front of the safe, as it is possible that it could get lost UNDER the safe.

Need to carry (if you can find any) canceled/obsolete cards to use them.

A AAA card works, as do some library cards, grocery cards, any card with a magnetic strip on it.

When a credit card is renewed, cut out the numbers, but keep the rest of the card---the strip still works.

And no need to carry it with you. Just hide it somewhere in the cabin, out of sight. On the odd chance that someone enters your cabin, they would have to know to even go looking for the card, then spend time searching.

Won't happen---too much chance of getting caught when they can't even be sure it's worthwhile.
