ABC to air 20/20 special "Cruise Ship Confidential"

Recommended Posts

Couple of specific problems with the show:

1. They had a "maritime security expert" comment a couple of times. He was actually a lawyer whose primary practice is suing cruise lines. After I had looked him up, the commentator finally said he was a plaintiff's lawyer. Don't know if he had any input into how he was presented, but it was less than forthright to say the least.

2. EVERY time they identified a negative comment in connection with a specific cruise line, it was Carnival. They even mentioned the George Smith case, but did not mention Royal Caribbean. They did acknowledge Disney had a cruise line, but did not mention anything negative with regard to Disney -- such as the young lady that disappeared a few months ago.

Not a hallmark of journalistic integrity.

We have been on 15 cruises and have never seen the events that were shown on ABC tonight! We are usually in our room by 11pm so maybe we have missed some of it. But usually, anything that happens the day or night before is all over the ship the following day. Like once, we heard someone was put off the ship for arguing with someone in the casino the night before. Maybe it happens on Spring Break cruises, never been on one and don't wish to. And if crew members are working 100 hours a week, how do they feel like drinking and partying all night? Also, I would be concerned if there was no emergency drill before we left port but have never been on a cruise yet that did not have one. I think the media sometimes exaggerates stories just for ratings! Funny, since ABC is owned by Disney, not one mention of Disney cruise lines!

I also thought it was terrible and showed a tiny part of cruising. It was all negative with a tiny bit of positive tossed in. I hope it doesn't scare anybody away.

As for the mention of Disney well they own ABC so they won't talk badly of them.

I can't watch it (don't have a TV) but I'm curious if a clip of this was shown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-NEtcW4drs Probably my all time favorite drunk person cruise clip ever... mostly because of the woman cracking up on the deck above toward the end.
Nope not shown

Also Thats the 2nd one... There is a first one of her with a puddle getting larger under her as you watch:eek:

After the Costa accident all of my friends and family were asking me if I was still planning on going on my Allure cruise in May (my first cruise ever). Uh....Yes! As a Paramedic I see more people die from Car wrecks every year than those from a sinking Cruise ship, and I live in a very small town, but we all still drive everyday! Airplanes crash and trains derail but we still use these forms of transportation. In a town not far from me several people from an Amish community died last spring when their horse and buggy got caught in some swift water and washed away. They didn't go out and shoot all of the horses after that though!

I just wonder how many of these channels reporting all of this crappy information has at some point had a cruise line to pay them to play their commercials???? People are so gullible. If its on TV it must be true right???:p

Oh, I know! I opted not to post that one since it has a little bit of nudity (if you're really prudish) in it. I'm kind of saddened they didn't even show a clip of it at some point! It's a classic.

But, since she didn't hurt anyone and since everyone looked like they were having a good time (minus the Mom having lunch) it probably wasn't "good enough" for this show. Now if someone had slipped in the puddle and broken their arm then I'm sure it would have AT LEAST 2 minutes devoted to it!

I have been on many cruises and I never saw any fights, misbehavior or anyone falling or jumping off! I saw the 20/20 show and it was just an

hour of cruise bashing. 20/20 just used the awful Concordia accident as

an excuse to do a show about cruises as its topical now.

a lot of Carnival bashing, no mention of RCCL. I do not understand what the point was of showcasing what the crew does on their off time. Do we really care that its worse than a fraternity or there is a "sex room". Shocking!

As a cruise person, the show was nothing with nothing. Just a lot of negatives and information on cruising that no one cares about. if you have

never been on a cruise, the show may make you think twice about cruising!

...REALLY, if someone from 20/20 tells you cruises are not safe are you going to cancel? please!

stop the drama!

its sad people died but im not going to cancel my cruises. no matter what "they" say. i might die in a plane crash getting to the port. who knows?!

I havent read through the past 7 pages so my regrets if this has been stated.

I saw part of the episode most of which dealt with all the crew partying and sex on board. This was no secret to me, I have read about it before.

All I will add is that all this program did was give yet another black mark to the cruise industry and was really unnecessary IMO. I am curious to see how much further Carnival stocks fall on monday now.

Just watched the 20/20 episode. Congrats to the Cruise Critic Lady for being on it.

I wasn't surprised by it, in the digital age you can find a video of fighting, sex, drunkenness, etc. on anything. McDonalds, cruises, concerts, charity events, the list goes on and on.

What I thought was funny though was that every topic was 95% attack, then 5% pro.

95% The crew live in crappy rooms, they drink and party and have sex, the job is 100 hours a week and bad pay....

5% Would you work their again.... "in a second" "can't wait to cruise"

95% Fights, and drunks

5% Facts are Cruises are the safest vacation

Ohh well, good for the crew that works hard and parties hard... they look better than I do the next morning.

Just what I was thinking... Did they mention Disney Cruise Line??

They did mention that their parent company, Disney, also has cruise line, and also showed the bow section of a Disney ship being lowered into place at the ship yard, but that was it. I just wonder how much RCI had to pay to stay out of this cruise bash?, a couple of video shots, but never mentioned in any bad light, unlike Carnival.

They even showed fireworks going off in a row beside the Disney ship in port.

It was disappointing, yet not surprising, the way they put such a negative spotlight on cruising. The problem with the Concordia sinking had nothing to do with passenger's excess drinking (by passengers anyway) or brawls in nightclubs or below deck crew sex, so why that was so much a part of this story baffles me. There have been plenty of other incidents on cruise ships that they could have focused on and spotlighted the POSITIVE outcome of those. They did mention a ship "Oceanis" I believe that had all it's passengers saved, but that was it. They did not say HOW they were saved.....which I imagine might have had something to do with a competent Captain and crew and lots of cooperation.

I was on the listing incident aboard the Crown Princess. Our Captain was on the loudspeaker within about 30 seconds of the incident. Within short order there had been a lounge designated for people with minor injuries. A call had been put out for any medically trained personnel to come help. There was a lounge designated for families trying to reconnect with their children. A printed memo came to each cabin within a few hours indicating we would be reimbursed for our cruise and our travel expenses back home and how to go about submitting for that. All this while they were checking on the security of the ship, trying to figure out what had happened, coordinating with the Coast Guard, arranging travel to the airport, assessing the medical needs, cleaning up broken perfume bottles and gift shop items, liquor bottles, a swimming pool that was flowing like a water fall from somewhere like deck 14 all the way down to deck 4 and I can't even imagine what other challenges they faced. All of this going on and it was a formal night and the waiters were dressed in formal wear serving a formal dinner (minus a few menu items) a mere 2 hours after the scary incident.

I was on Enchantment once when a passenger had some sort of medical emergency that required the Coast Guard to airlift her off. We watched this amazing operation. While 20/20 showed someone being airlifted, it was almost in a negative light.....as if this was the drastic measure that would need to be taken if something happens to you. But what about spotlighting the huge efforts, knowledge and cooperation it takes for the crew to get this done.

It certainly appears as if there were some major blunders on board Concordia, causing unnecessary deaths, injury, panic and difficult disembarkation. Why couldn't this 20/20 piece have balanced this out by spotlighting the positives that have happened in the industry during emergencies. I would hope that if they dug far enough and asked enough passengers, they might have been able to find some people who had positive things to say about the crew members. I believe that many of them were trying their best.....and their job was made very difficult by the Captain's delayed order to abandon ship, which made for a panicked atmosphere among the passengers. How can 1,000 crew control 3,000 passengers who are in a panicked state?

I just hope when they do make the movie, they will spotlight some positive stores among the crew because I know there have to be some.

Her words. "We're celebrating" the 100th anniversary of the Titanic incident. Really? Was she being facitious or was she serious? Really? Celebrating? Maybe I missed something.

Not the word I would have chosen, but certainly not the first time someone has used celebrate in recognizing a bad event

There are celebrations. Just as when people die, there are celebrations of their life.

This year in Belfast the new Titanic museum will be having the grand opening at the Thompson graving dock from where the Titanic left on her maiden and only voyage. After having been there 14 months ago, I wished I could be there for the "celebration" but unfortunately I will be cruising from Australia at that time. At least I will be on a ship. I would hope for some sort of celebration on board Radiance at that time.

Celebration is another of those words that we use in a certain way and it gives us certain feelings but according to the true meaning, she did use the word correctly.

Here is the meaning - http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/celebrate

It's sort of how I felt about them saying I was being accosted by bar servers. I was thinking of them beating me up or holding me down to force a drink down my throat. But the word accosted is a bit more benign in meaning than I think of it.

Yes there will be ceremonies and festivities for the titanic. And I imagine they will be nice and even solemn and there will be a load of money to be made on souvenirs.
