Nope. Never even heard that one. How many days at sea was it, what services did it lose, and how was it pulled back to port?

Okay, here's the update from Coast Guard Cutter Vigorous escorting the ship. Commander Greg Magee on CNN was asked if anyone went aborad to assess how the pax are doing. he said "right now we haven't had anyone onboard except Carnival employees, and the safety and comfort of their passengers is Carnival's responsibility."

 

He said the ship is moving between 5-8 mph. They hope it will arrive on the 13th (late afternoon/evening), but if they have a big change in the winds it will likely be the 14th.

 

They had some video of the ship and pax. people on deck and some on their balcony.

 

This CG unit is only taking them as close to the port as they can, then handing them off to another local CG unit who will get them pier side and customs and border patrol will start.

 

They're playing a recording from a pax now -- no idea how -- Ann Barlow is pax name. Raw sewage coming down walls and feces in hallways. Said they were told they are supposed to have better food tonight bc 4 carnival ships have stopped and replenished their supplies. Smell is so bad, no masks. No one can stay in stateroom except upper most decks with balconies bc smell is so bad and it's very hot.

 

They reported that the Propulsion system and alternator were repaired before this sailing.

I know people that have never left the state they were born in. I once read an article about people born on Galveston Island who have never left the island.

I would hope they would offload the pax to the two ships that brought them provisions and took them home. I guess they would have only done that if the ship was sinking and not stinking.

We got the following text from Daughter-in-law this morning.(Sh*t and p*ss rolling acroos floor with evry wave. People sick and throwing up every where.) I don't think they can leave their munster station to roam around. She is still in her pajamas.

 

I wouldn't get on a Carnival ship if it was sailing to heaven!!

CNN just reported spoke with a passenger live. "The stench is unbearable - vomit, urine, and feces" Pax are hoarding food and then eating it and getting sick because it's not been refridgerated.

The point was, they could have transfered the passengers from ship to ship with a lifeboat/tender type of transfer, and it would have been a risk, but an option also that was possible.

 

I agree that the two ships tied together was not happening, but some type of lifeboat transfer is possible.

 

Absolutely, that would be possible. No doubt. However, there is a martime rule that says the ship, itself, is the prefered life boat. First priority is to ensure safety of passengers and crew on the ship, if possible. Only when loss of the ship is looming should passengers be evacuated into life boats. Since, for the time being, there is no threat to the ship, there is no cause to transfer the passengers to another ship.

 

I know it sucks for them, but keeping them on the Triumph is the best course.

He gave a bit of good news -- the ship could actually arrive tomorrow afternoon or evening, instead of thursday if the winds and currents cooperate.

First time USA passports for a family of four (two adults, 2 children) now cost a total of $480 + the photos, etc.

 

That is not insignificant when compared to the cost of a three or four day cruise, especially if a future trip that would require passports is not anticipated.

 

The need for a passport or passport card for a US citizen when crossing into the USA from Canada or Mexico and the need for a passport when flying to the USA from a country that does not require US citizens to have a passport is a USA government requirement, mainly started after 9/11.

 

I agree that it is best these days to have a passport, but there are valid financial reasons not to require one on a "closed circuit: cruise.

 

Yes, a situation could arise where you need to unexpectly need to disembark in Mexico or have to fly back internationally.

 

But you could have other unusual situations where you do not have proper documentation. As one example, if you are flying and need to make an unusual landing (weather, mechanical trouble, etc) in Russia, but do not have a Russian visa which is required if you fly into that country. Obviously, travelers do not get visas for every country they may fly over, but do not plan to stop in.

 

I agree it is expensive, so spread it out, When we went on the Valor last January, our Son, DiL and GSon all needed passports so we started early in the process and ordered one when we booked, one a few months later and the last about 3 months before the cruise, the Son and Dil got pass cards and the Grandson got a passport (name concerns for him so went for the full passport) Now when they need renewed they will replace with full passports also. So start with one for you or spouse, then next cruise get another, and so on, kids last.

 

That way when it is time to renew it is also spread out over a few years.

 

Just an idea, if you want to make them work.

 

For us in South Dakota we have a second use for them, when it is time to renew your drivers license, you can use your Passport and that is all you need to prove you are a citizen, or you need your old Drivers license, some other form of photo id, and 2 bill in your name, with your current address, and if you have moved you also need something that shows you were at the old address on your old license.

 

So it is worth having a passport for us.

Yep. He also said that due to the winds and the currents that Mobile was the quickest to get too, even quicker than Progresso.

 

So it's killing 2 birds with one stone. Get the passengers back to the US as quick as possible and getting the ship to where it can be repaired.

 

CNN also somehow interviewed a passenger and while they said that th4e smells and waster were not good in some areas, they felt the crew and everyone were doing the BEST they could to be helpful and that that were being communicated with constantly. This passenger on ship also said there had been 4 other ships stopped by and dropped off supplies. She thought they might even get some hot food tonight somehow.

I heard that also, sure sounded like when asked about the conditions of the passengers on the ship, when he said they had not boarded, like he was saying "were not getting on the ship, unless we really have to" he did not say it, but it seamed like he thought it.

Why can't they assign a hotline just for those families with pax on the ship? I don't understand in this world of communications that this wouldn't be be the first thing done? Once families reach this hotline they would immediately be put in touch with someone who is on the front lines and knows exactly what is happening. And if Carnival won't give honest assessments of what is happening, then shame on them. What makes you think that Carnival knows any more than what they say publically and in recorded messages to the emergency contacts of those on board? Passengers (and crew) are safe. Ship is going to Mobile and is expected to arrive there Thursday. Plans are being made, but not finalized, to bus or fly people home. Food and water are available. What more is there really to say?

 

 

I also don't understand why there wouldn't be more lines for food, i.e. forward, mid and aft. We have no idea how many lines there are or how easy/difficult it is for the crew to get food to the passengers. In the previous disaster like this, crew had to form a "bucket line", passing food from a lower deck all the way to the upper deck where it was served.

 

And if there isn't enough food, drop some by helicopter. Doesn't have to fancy, just ENOUGH for everyone. I realize there will be the hoarders, but maybe it could help. There has been nothing said about a shortage of food, just the long lines to get it. This is because everyone, understandably, wants to eat at once. Think what the lines would be if there was no problem, but 100% of the passengers decided to go to the buffet at the same time.

 

Being pro-active is good business. Being reactive is only going to be an uphill battle.

Maybe I'm being too simplistic, but the above suggestions come to mind as pretty easy to do.

In the next few days people are going to be dying on that ship, especially those with ill health when the ship departed. If Carnival lengthened the time this floating jail remains at sea they should face criminal charges.

While it is possible, it is not a certainty. No one died on the Splendor as I recall and the circumstances were as bad.
