Recommended Posts

There are reports of a major earthquake near wellington, I hope all is well and people and property have come through relatively unharmed.

Here's a link to The Australian's article on the quake.

Appreciate these postings and info shared. From USA Today a few minutes ago this morning, they have this headline from their AP wire story: "Magnitude 6.9 quake rattles New Zealand" with these highlights: "The New Zealand capital Wellington was rattled by a strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake on Sunday that broke water mains, smashed windows and downed power lines. Wellington Police Inspector Marty Parker said there had been minor structural damage that had left parts of the city without power. There have been no reports of injury and no tsunami. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck under the Cook Strait, 35 miles southwest of Wellington. It was 6 miles underground. New Zealand is part of the so-called Pacific 'Ring of Fire' that receives regular seismic activity. A severe earthquake in the city of Christchurch in 2011 killed 185 people and destroyed much of the city's downtown."

This earthquake struck near nightfall. That's a better time when sailing in this area. My wife mentioned not wanting to be there if a tsunami was created. Hopefully, we will do fine when there in the NZ area during our early 2014 period there. No "Shake, Rattle & Roll" desired for our trip experience.

Looks like they are a bit behind if still reporting 6.9

Apparently, a Las Vegas newspaper has reported the earthquake as Australian, and taking place at Seddon, near Melbourne, while the effects were said to be felt at Napier, near Perth (which is over 3,000 km to the west).

A slight case of being geographically challenged?

Still having lots of smaller quakes here.

Haha... if you're going to put facts in, you should make sure the obvious ones are correct!

Problem is if you're a local over there reading that news, you get a very incorrect impression, which is how false claims start.

LOL, for their use of (or lack there of) google maps.:D

Well they were on the right track....sort of....

For a junior journalist given a breaking story to check out that they know nothing about , there is a connection for Seddon in Melbourne and Seddon in Marlborough...

Seddon is a suburb 7 km west of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, lying between Footscray and Yarraville. Its local government area is the City of Maribyrnong. At the 2011 Census, Seddon had a population of 4,851.

Formerly a working-class suburb, in recent years Seddon has experienced rapid gentrification due to its close proximity to the Melbourne City Centre.

he suburb was earlier known as Belgravia but is now called Seddon after Richard Seddon, the New Zealand Prime Minister from 1893 to 1906, who resided there before he moved to Bendigo and later to New Zealand. The Belgravia Hotel, at 236 Nicholson Street Footscray, still carries Seddon's original name.Seddon Post Office opened on 29 September 1908 and closed in 1976. Seddon West Post Office opened in 1924 and remains open.[2] Seddon shares its postcode with neighbouring Footscray - 3011.

I would have thought a country code may have come up with something closer to NZ.

If the journalist is relying on that link to justify the mistake, well... :D

The Port in Wellington seems to be OK. A small container ship was due this afternoon and she has docked.

The cruise wharf at Aotea appears unscathed.

According to the webcam the InterIsland Ferries are still working.

The only reports of damage have been...

Part of the city's port, which is on reclaimed land, has collapsed and one container has been lost into the harbour, while large cracks are visible on the port's grounds.

Hello Mic, how are you and Rosie? Found this Australia and New Zealand Cruisers on Cruise Critic Message Board Forrums. Sad to here your friends went though the quake, it would be hard to live with the fear that a big quake could happen anytime.

Mic, I don't know how to send private messages, can't work it out. Would like to contact Karen, but don't know how.

I have booked another cruise Oct 2013 Singapore to Sydney.

Hope I hear from you. Tracey from Newcastle
