A new P&O ship called the Britiannia. The bigger sister to the Royal-the one Princess should have built for us. Being built by Fincantieri at the Monfalcone shipyard, she's a beauty.

Please note on the infographic-4 swimming pools including the aft pool.

I'm a regular P&O passenger and I've been following the advent of Royal Princess with interest. (I blogged about her arrival into Southampton in early June.)

I'm not expecting the differences between Royal/Regal Princess(es) and Brittania to be more than skin deep. In particular, I don't think they're going to change the hull very much, if at all. The differences are going to be in the decor - P&O have apparently hired a UK-based design consultancy to advise them.

So I'm expecting that the on-board restaurants and lounges will be different - different names, different cuisines, different decor. As usual, the casino will be smaller - we Brits don't seem to want to gamble on cruises. (Probably due to the fact that there are licensed betting shops in every high street in the country so opportunities to do so are widely available.) If what was done on Ventura and Azura is any clue, the space freed up by the shrinking of the casino will be occupied by a pub - that's what we like to do on cruises!

There may be one big difference, however. P&O have said that there'll be a Crows Nest. On the other P&O ships that have them (Oriana, Aurora and Arcadia) this is a forward-facing lounge on a high deck, typically one or two decks above the Lido deck and right forward. Pretty much where The Sanctuary is on Royal Princess, in fact.... So perhaps there's going to be an extra deck house on deck 17, where the Sanctuary is, and the Crows nest will be in there; and perhaps the Sanctuary will be above that.

But we won't know for sure until next spring when P&O reveal the deck plans. I have a feeling that when we see them, the structural differences between Britannia and her sisters will be very small; it'll all be about the decor.

Let us hope they have the sense to put in a central public staircase.

I'm not going to say whether I there should be one or not, but I have to say that I think that's the sort of significant structural/design change that definitely won't be made. The Royal Princess class is as it is, and I think the differences between ships in the class will be minor.

Well it is clear from the renderings that the aft upper decks have been modified with an aft pool, and it is obvious the Crow's Nest will be the area with sloping glass windows two decks above the bridge. That area is cabins/balconies on the Royal.

That is already a few significant design changes, and putting in a central staircase is not beyond reason.

For me the biggest difference is that Britannia takes 772 more passengers than Royal/Regal Princess. Even less chance of a sunbed !

I think the P&O figure is the maximum - all possible berths occupied - whereas the Princess figure may just be 'lower berths' only. There may not be much, if any, actual difference in practice.

In fact checking the figures for Royal Princess I see they're 3600 'Normal' and 4380 'Maximum'. So pretty much the same as Britannia.

That is the full occupancy numbers. Royal/Regal also carry well over 4000 passengers when all the beds are filled, but Princess give 3600 as the passenger capacity, which is when there are only 2 passengers in each cabin.

The Britannia is also going to have a number of single cabins, including some with balconies. That would be nice.

Don't care about the pools. Never been in one on a ship. Seems to me that relatively few adults actually use the pool(s).

Pam,

WOW!! I wish Princess also had single cabins!! And with balconies.......how nice would that be!

If the missing central staircase is there but for staff only I cannot see the big deal in making it a public one. Let's not rake up the mess up Princess created when they built the Royal, the numbers will twll them. When your newest ship is selling sailing for less than there older ships, Princess HQ no it was a bad choice.

I disagree. The pools seem to be used quite a bit in the Caribbean and Mexican cruises. They are actually packed on the cruises I have been on.

The only time I actually swim is on ships. I don't have time except for on vacation and don't have easy access to a pool where I live.

To put it simply, if the Royal Princess was the Brittania we probably would have booked it. But the actual Royal Princess - no way. Cheers!

I definitely think more positively about Brittania (from what I can tell) than the Royal.

I was thinking the same thing! Love to relax around the pool when I cruise since I don't get much time for that at home!

I think Princess is going to regret their decision to put only two pools on Royal Princess and Regal Princess--at least I hope so.

They should already be regretting that decision. They've escaped criticism up to now for this mistake. They won't be so lucky once it begins its Caribbean itineraries.

We have read very few positive things about gimmicks such as the Sea Walk and fountain show.

Really Princess? Really?

All of that said, I plan to enjoy my 11 days on that ship next summer.

The first thing I noticed on that video was the two huge pools, then the big sunning area aft with what appears to be some kind of water, then the pool forward like the spa pool on other ships . . . . brilliant. Plus the removal of the gimmicky Seawalk.

Although, I think that the sides of the Royal, in particular the curved balconies, are more visually interesting. In person and up close at the dock, I'm betting the Britannia is going to look like a Stalinist-era apartment block: massive, featureless, monotonous.

Yes, a Stalinist-era apartment block with itty-bitty balconies... :p
