Help: I'm a Cruiser, She's a Porter

I don't know how many of you find yourselves in this situation. I could get on a cruise ship - any size and any Cruise line - any destination any where in the world, and be perfectly happy to stay there until it docked after the cruise was over. No stress, so much to do and experience, so relaxing! Once I get off the ship the stress starts for me … excursions, vehicle rentals, where to eat, when to eat, what to see, what we missed seeing, rushing to the next place, shopping, shopping, shopping, where did the time go lets rush back to the ship!

 

My DW loves the Ports of call. After going to the same destinations a few times the first question that comes up is - we've been there before lets go somewhere different. So much to see in this wonderful planet called earth. So many treasures to find and worlds to explore, so many beautiful beaches, so many great people to meet, so many ways to help out the local economy of our host countries.

 

Because we have a great marriage (just celebrated 40 years) we have learned to compromise and take advantage of all the port days to the maximum. lol :)

But we also just took a cruise in Sept. to Hawaii and spent 5 days cruising before hitting the ports in Hawaii. Excellent compromise!

 

Are you a Cruiser or a Porter? How do you work out your different tastes?

We pace ourselves. In other words, we find balance between the ship and the ports and we don't run all around in each port. We prioritize the ports that we want to spend a lot of time touring while balancing this in some ports where we don't tour but just walk around on our own.

 

Compromise is a great value which I applaud.

We use to do the hurry up & see everything type vacations

Now we just pick a few things we really want to do ..some ports we just walk around & enjoy the sights & food ;)

We are not beach people so that takes care of searching for the perfect beach

 

You do what works best for you

 

We have been married 43 yrs ..so I guess we are doing something right:D

We have never felt the need to rush around like crazy and see every possible thing in every port. We choose our priorities and if we miss something, it was an 'educated' choice. I like to know if something special is available but then we choose whether we feel the 'need' to visit/see it. :) Works well for us and has for 44 years.

We balance our priorities. We sometimes go on a cruise that my DH really wants and later one I want more to see something different. It all works out, we have done over 45 cruises in the past 30+ years.

Balance, priorities and compromise seem to be the key to cruising for us. We know you can't see everything in every port so don't even try to.

Wow, thought this post was written by my husband, we have the same issue.

We always talk beforehand to see what we will each be interested in and/or what needs to be a compromise.

 

Sometimes we do different things at ports.

Most recently in Italy he went on a hiking excursion to Mt. Etna while I went on a sail and beach day. We each got to swap great stories and photos at dinner. :)

Myself and DW are cruisers . Ports are nice but do a cruise to nowhere that didn't have any ports of call.

A porter in UK carries the luggage - yep - that's me - AKA Dobbin (the cart horse):D

 

We are both cruisers and 'excursioners' - the ship is part of the experience but the ports of call are probably the main reason for choosing a particular cruise.

 

We are now getting to the stage where we have visited the same port more than once, Having done the 'run-around-like-mad-people' excursions, we can now focus on doing one particular thing at a port.

We just got into cruising 6 years ago so we are still learning how to 'go with the flow'. We'll do our 5th cruise for 2013 in Dec. so we are catching on quickly even though we started later in life.

We're porters defiantly. Even if it's just to walk around a bit and grab some lunch.

 

As long as DW can get a bit of time by the pool, she's happy. Other than that, there's so much to see.

I'm the cruiser....hubby loves the ports. We, too, have been together for 40 years! We've learned to compromise a lot!!!!

Married 60years and cruised over 80 times. been there, done that, and now we can lay back and enjoy the ship.

We are both cruisers. Been married 33 years. Been on 3 cruises and waiting for #4 in Feb 2014. We are both content to just relax and enjoy the ship. We do get off at each port but mainly just to find a spot to sit and people watch.

We leave the stress of rushing here and there back home.

If we want a vacation of constant running around trying to see all the sites and shop all the shops, we'll take a land vacation.

 

While we usually select our cruises based on the ports of call we rarely try to do more than one or 2 things. It's futile to try to see everything in a port in one short day, so why try? That's what return visits (whether cruise or land) are for.

What we use to do is ....if he wanted to do something (like scuba dive) and I wanted to go to the beach, then he did his thing, I do mine.

 

This coming year, I'm trying another tactic (for Hawaii) first week we'll do what he wants, then the second week (B2B) we'll do what I want.:D

We like both sea days and ports; it used to be much more about the ports, but we have come to like lots of sea days more and more, as on a Transatlantic.

 

If in port, we don't try to do it all; if we've been there before it's often just walk around or find a beach. If it's a new port, we try to tour the main sights.

We do both sea days and port days, depending on the port. If it's the Caribbean and we've been there before, we just grab a taxi and go to the beach. In St. Thomas, we always visit with friends who we met on CC and who live there. Many days, I might stay on board and DH might take an excursion that's too strenuous for me.

I am definitely a cruiser. In fact at dinner tonight I told my BF that on our cruise in 2 weeks I am happy to stay on the ship all week! We have been to the ports before and I enjoy having the ship to ourselves!

Cruising only - I'd like as few port days as possible. When I want to see the places on land, I'll take a land vacation; for me, being on the ship at sea is the thing I like. I don't even want to see land for days at a time.

I'm a 'porter' and he's a 'cruiser'. We used to try and compromise but after I suffered a series of serious health problems my lovely hubby now leaves me to decide what we do as he knows I have a 'bucket list' to fulfil. Left to him we'd probably never leave the casino !:D
