Grandeur Damaged?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure the RCI executives at the New York Quantum Dining Reveal will be rushing through it to get caught up on the Grandeur damage.

Eric

Only info so far I've seen from someone a the dining reveal was that after 55 minutes they hadn't told them anything lol.

I tried to brighten up the original photo. I put in two yellow arrows to show the reported damage. There must be some glass damage from a wave impact like that. Maybe it was just a few guests that spent way too much time at the Windjammer.

The only thing I could find doing an internet search was the wave that killed a passenger on the Marco Polo in Feb. Hopefully it's not true but if it is, I hope and pray that everyone is okay. Scary situation!

The Grandeur is still 688 nautical miles out from Baltimore. That monster storm off the east coast may have a had some influence in creating that wave.

Much clearer, thanks.

Thank you, I could not see the damage until you lightened it and put in the arrows.

Nothing confirmed that I can find and only the one report. I would have never put it up without seeing the picture first. I am positive that a week or so ago someone posted a photo of a large crack in Deck 10 of Grandeur. Either here or on a FB page but I have not been able to go back and find it.

The ship did indeed go through bad weather a couple of weeks ago and based on satellite photos of the Atlantic today, it looks like the ship is near another area of disturbed weather.

Never really thought about that, it's suppose to be nasty, nasty storm. Hopefully someone will post soon on the truth to this and will let us know if anyone was injured. Also hoping that ship wasn't damaged too much. Like I said before, Scary Situation!

I wish there was a better picture, I can't quite make out the damage. BTW, I think I'm leaving on the Grandeur on Friday.

She's supposed to be in Port Canaveral on Sunday, are you on a repositioning cruise? I could look it up I suppose but I'm feeling lazy after a big lunch. Hope it all works out for you.

Addendum: Got some energy, looked it up. It seems PC is a stop on an 8 day out of Baltimore. Hope to see her there this Sunday.

We are doing 8 nights to the Bahamas.

Thanks for the hopes.

There is a strong front located right near the Grandeur's position. It is the higher of the two fronts on this current satellite photo. Grandeur is south and west of Bermuda, halfway between the mainland and Bermuda.

Looking at the photo, I'm a little skeptical that that is a deck that has collapsed. While the wood caps do appear to be missing on some sections of both the inboard and outboard handrails on deck 10, the steel handrails at the outboard side appear to be intact, and if a wave of sufficient strength to tear that deck loose had hit, those handrails would either be gone completely, or folded over so that they would not be visible. Since this is an open deck, even a large quantity of water is not confined, and wouldn't provide enough load to tear a steel deck from the side of the ship without distorting the side of the ship as well, and the deck 9 window frames look okay. I'm guessing that this was an overhead covering on the bottom of deck 10 that came down. I would suspect that this was caused by a wind whirling around inside the pool deck area. The ship may have actually struck a rogue wave, but this kind of damage (if it was the deck), this high on the ship, would have resulted in far greater damage elsewhere. Another possibility is that the rogue wave caused a shock to the ship's structure, that caused the overhead covering to come down. I've seen this kind of damage (overheads coming down) caused by high seas myself.

I tend to agree with your assessment. I do not see any daylight coming in what would be a gaping opening, if the entire steel deck surface collapsed.

Looking at the photo a little closer, it looks like there is a bunch of Sargassum Seaweed on the deck to the left of the hot tub. As the Grandeur is at the northern portion of the Sargasso Sea, it does lend credence to the rogue wave theory.

I see that. And yet they straightened out the deck chairs and didn't clean up the sea weed.

LOL

Maybe the deck chairs is one dept. and seaweed removal another? Though it does look like the may have closed the upper deck if the chairs are all neatly stacked.

I'm having a hard time believing the rogue wave story. They do happen, but this doesn't look like one. The part that collapsed is not the deck, but a wooden grid with cloth over it. This does tend to flex and move in the winds. The railings on the top deck are missing on both sides as well but do not appear damaged. At the same time something that had enough force to tear the inside railing off did not leave anymore water on the pool deck than you typically see from people getting in and out of the hot tubs. The deck chairs on deck 10 also appear to be stacked and placed in a different location by choice, rather than thrown there as a rogue wave would do. I'm more inclined to believe that they were working on that section of deck to do some refurbishments. Perhaps they are replacing those railings and cleared the chairs out of the way. The ceiling falling down could be completely unrelated (may have been loosened in the last storm) or a result of some of the work on the surface above it. We have all been on cruises and know how easily rumors are started. Something happens and people start theorizing and others build upon it as its spread and then eventually it starts being spoken as fact.

This isn't the same spot, but it'll give you an idea of what the ceiling on that deck of Grandeur looks like.

Thanks for doing that ... it helps a lot.

Hope all is well. We sail her later this spring :o
