RCCL change in smoking policy

Recommended Posts

Glad to hear that the TA accepted responsibility for not notifying you of the policy change and compensating you. It's too bad things happened the way they did. As you found out, had you booked directly with Royal Caribbean you would have been notified by them of the change.

I am also glad that you feel good about staying with your TA since they are doing their best to make you happy.

The ecigs I use don't have odor. So maybe some do but the ones I have tried don't. My adult kids hate smoke but the ecigs they said no problem.

I have used them in my cabins on Carnival and Princess with no problems.

Speaking as a non smoker, have been in a car with someone smoking an ecig. no problem and no smell.:)

I live in Maryland and after the no smoking was imposed by omaley I know 5 bar owners that had so many patrons that chose to hang out at there houses or back yard partys that they decided that the loss in money

wasn't worth keeping the bar open. loss of tax money, workers income tax and 9% booze tax.

But he made part of it up by having the cruise lines charge tax on everything while youre in Maryland waters (check your receipts)

Now the buildings sit empty and are becoming in disrepair. omaley has been great for Maryland

Loss of jobs, loss of tax money, higher taxes, the worst roads in the country and $15.00 a day parking at the cruise terminal. I just found out Royal Caribbean has now stopped smoking on there balconeys this will by my last cruise

You are blaming no smoking advocates for that? That I would have to say s nonsense. If those bars lost that much business, they were already in trouble.

$15 cruise terminal parking! That's pretty cheap for on-site facilities! Is this guy up for re-election? :D

FYI, Carnival, HAL, and NCL still allow smoking on their balconies.......so you can keep on cruising! :)

Why cant they do balconys one side non smoking other side smoking

just like on deck, but I guess the non smokers would complaine about that to:eek::eek::eek::p:p:p

Do a search - this has been discussed extensively on numerous threads already.

Either way it's moot as the policy through which RCI decided not to allow any balcony smoking has been in place since 1/14. Not like to change back anytime soon.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well pooh, was about to book a Halloween cruise for my partner and myself...We haven't cruised in over 3yrs and at the last minute thought to check if there had been any changes to the smoking policy...Anyhoo's that won't fly with him, so looks as though our cruising together days are over. :( He smokes, I don't...They had already begun to eliminate where you could smoke on ships the last time we were on, but he coped well as long as he still had the balcony available...With that option gone I'm afraid it would become the vacation from hell for both of us...I couldn't trust him because if there's a rule he'll break it and love every minute of it...I have no desire to be put off the ship at the first stop and lose my money.

Oh well...I understand how those who don't smoke feel, but it's never bother me...I guess I equate it with everyone I love...LOL

I'm really disappointed now though.

Doesn't need to stop you from cruising together, I'm pretty sure Carnival still allows smoking on the balcony

I know this is an old thread but let me offer my 2 cents. I'm a smoker and my Oasis cruise last month was the first since the policy change. It really wasn't that inconvenient to go up to the pool deck smoking areas as opposed to my balcony. It really just took a max of 2 mins to get there and there were always seats. Additionally the casino provided an easy place to hop over to in the evening. I was initially upset by the policy but it did not negatively impact my cruise experience at all. I will continue to sail even with the new policy unless the completely disallow smoking onboard. I hope your partner reconsiders because RCI is otherwise a great great cruise line.

Thanks so much for suggestions of ecigs and vapors but already thought of that and asked RCCL directly but that is a big fat no also ... Frankly if it was just the $250 cleaning fee involved I would pay it but they also state you may be removed from ship. Thank you also to those who pointed out policy changed sept 2013, I should have clarified in my original post that I booked and paid for my trip may 23 2013 and was not notified of change in policy until I received my cruise ticket booklet and luggage tags today! Yes a Sept 2013 policy change notification would have been amble time for me to change our plans , if I would have been notified in sept 2013 or even 90 days out. But what I received was my documents today may 21, 2014 just 22days before my sailing. Which I read front to back being our first cruise and found the change. With no recourse .. That is my frustration
this is such old news that your post seems almost comical now, and second "recourse" what recourse could you possibly be thinking of????

Usually the opposite has happened. Business actually picks up when the no smoking policies start. If you look around anywhere that allows smoking, the majority of people aren't smoking.

FWIW, I book Royal Caribbean because of the new smoking policies. I wish more cruiselines would follow suit.

You're correct, I think Carnival, NCL, and HAL still allow balcony smoking. I know a double Pinnacle couple that have moved to NCL for that very reason.

It's possible the places sucked so bad that the only thing keeping them afloat was that they allowed smoking. Once that was gone, they went the direction they would have naturally gone........south! ;)

Agreed. I'm going on my first RC cruise next May and would not have considered it before the new stricter policies. The one after that I'll probably try Celebrity. They don't allow it indoors at all, not even in the casino. Smoke free casino sounds nice.

There are always anecdotal stories about non-smoking policies killing businesses, but the fact is pretty much every service industry is trending toward non-smoking and it's not because they love us and want us to be healthy. It's because their customers are demanding it.

Not looking to sue, not that kind of person. But just think in fairness maybe a ship credit or something for the lack of notification and inconvenience .. Yes inconvenience we were of the mind set of a relaxing vacation with excursions in ports with nights relaxing together on balcony key word together !

Something for nothing, a growing trend.

Glad it worked out for you!

However you can still buy an e-cig, and whatever % nicotine and flavor your husband would enjoy and have a great time on your balcony. With the wind on a balcony and the very minimal scent most e-cigs emit I highly doubt anyone will even smell it, and if they do it will be the flavor you pick which could be just about anything at this point. Just saying.. it's possible :)

Have fun!
