Any concern about that new Caribbean virus for cruises?

Recommended Posts

Have seen stories on news about it,Chicahunga(or something). Not fatal but caused by mosquitos.

Heard we even have it here in S.Florida, but people got it in Caribbean.

I have a cruise there in Nov.but figure it can t be THAT bad.So many diseases caused by those d,,,,bugs. Will just take precautions.

Anyone concerned ,canceling,or not booking due to this?Just curious.

There are other threads on CC dealing with the virus, some people are paranoid about it and won't get off the boat. Personally, I've been to St Martin 3 times in the last year and I've never even seen a mosquito. Eventually it's going to be everywhere and people will just have to learn to live with it, much like West Nile.

THanks for correct spelling.

Odd, I ve not seen any threads.Maybe on certain cruise sites?

Agree, nothing to be paranoid about.BUt can see you d hate to get it and ruin your cruise.

But, hey, could be going to Saudi Arabia and worry about MERS,right?

There are some discussions about this virus and cruising on the St. Maarten Forum here at CC.

Here is a link to one of the threads:

Well, that one may be the newest "kid on the block", but I'd just as soon avoid other mosquito-borne illnesses, like Malaria and Dengue fever, too.

So, whenever a shore excursion takes us very far inland (like some of the Mayan Ruins tours) we pack a good DEET- based bug spray. But, would fear of contracting something like this keep us from going to those islands? No way!

It's Chikungunya. No, I am not concerned.

I've not read any reports from cruisers saying they had the Chikungunya virus.

We were in St. Maarten/St. Martin (both sides) and never even saw a mosquito.

We had applied Deet just in case -- better silly than worry! :D

I agree.

Apply Deet and enjoy your day ashore.

I have never heard of this Caribbean Virus.

But I have been losing a lot of sleep lately over the "Restless Leg Syndrome" that is sweeping over America.

It has put off many people who had originally planned to fly to America to take a Caribbean Cruise. Now it is just too risky.

See from above post a NOTICE from CDC posted for St.Martin.WOnder what the difference is between that and WARNING.Just severity, spread, etc.?

Since I live in FL.and its already in some parts of state ,,I d have to worry every time I go out .What? As said before, will just take reg. precautions and HOPE I don't get it.

PS. sorry, but a little more concerned about it,then above poster.BUt,it made me smile. No restless leg syndrome NOTICE from CDC ,yet....

As I posted on another thread here- Dengue Fever has been around for a long time and has not kept people from cruising.

Is this new virus worse than Dengue?

We have not seen any mosquitoes on our cruises or excursions, but are always prepared with repellant.

Maybe because I live in FL,but papers here have had a lot about it lately since they found some cases that got it in St.Martin and Haiti.

GUess you re really sick, a few fatalities(mostly in Haiti)but most DO recover.

I LOVE to leave my doors open on ship at nite, but have had bugs come in on occasion.Depends on if docked or at sea,I m sure.

Sorry, but (tongue in cheek) have NOT seen travel notice for "restless leg".

Yes, those da...bug s cause many diseases and not good, agree.
