Hairspray is going to Freedom of the Seas

Recommended Posts

Do you know what year 2014 or 2015?

Cats is being added to the Oasis during its Fall 2014 dry dock.

The large production shows are typically changed during a dry dock due to the complexity of removing the old sets from the ship and replacing them with the new sets.

So if I am following this correctly, that will put Saturday Night Fever on the Liberty and Hairspray on the Freedom.

That makes only one logical choice for the Independence: Grease.

I hope I am not the only one who gets the connection.:D

CATS

The only broadway show i ever fell asleep to. IMO Hairspray is much better

Shelton

Didn't care for Hairspray. Didn't go back on our B2Bs to see it again.

Chicago was great on the Allure! As was Blue!:D

The lines waiting to get in would seem to counter what the staff mentioned to you! Sounds like sour grapes!

As far as the other Broadway shows, bring em on, far superior to the regular shows on a lot of the smaller ships!:D

Loved Chicago and Blue Planet. Saw it on all B2Bs

Love Grease and IOS........!!!

It's been mentioned here a few times, but I'm curious to know what dry dock has to do with changing shows?

As another mentioned it is a major process to remove and add new sets, lighting, etc. According to the stage manager on Explorer during a behind the scenes tour, many months of preparation go into building the sets, costumes and other props and removing an old "active" set from a ship and installing a new one involves a lot of planning, rigging, set up, manpower, and time.

This is the main reason shows typically last 5 years on each ship so that the changeovers can be done during their routine 5-year maintenance dry dock.

You can't rebuild a stage, rigging, lighting and set, and train a whole new set of theatrical and sound managers on a turnaround day.

As Freedom is not scheduled for its next dry dock until January 2015 I would say that would be the likely date.

I have absolutely no "inside information on THAT;), but that sounds like GOOD speculation to me.

Just pure speculation with clarea. ;) But if Freedom is getting Hairspray as you heard, then the timing with it coming off Oasis would fit with Freedom's 1/15 dry dock.

Hope you're enjoying your cruise - we'll be on Grandeur again in July. (Friends of ours board her tomorrow).

With this change I'm sure that they are also planning some other changes for the drydock which would explain the longer than routine drydock that is scheduled.

We will be sailing Freedom in June of 2015 with my two granddaughters.

Is Hairspray okay to take the girls to or is it for a little bit more mature audience?

How old are they? If they are upper elementary, they should have had the history behind it in school. The music is terrific and the message of hope and equality cannot be beat!

When I was on Independence in March, one of the CD's staff mentioned that Allure would be losing Chicago soon, since it was getting flak for being too "risque" for the family atmosphere on the boat. Hadn't heard of any replacement though.

Good. H

I thought that RCCL had a location where they trained for shows before going on a ship. H

That's pretty cool. I'm glad to see RCI expanding those Broadway productions to more ships. RCI is really setting themselves apart from the others with their entertainment.

IMHO The production of Legally Blonde on NCL Getaway was just superb.

I walked out of Saturday Night Fever on Liberty as it was like amateur night.

Looking forward to seeing Hairspray on Oasis...but as it will be her penultimate sailing before dry dock I hope they still give it their all....

If the line considers the stage version of Chicago too risque, perhaps they can explain the fact that the Academy Award film version was shown on the poolside screen on at least two evenings on the recent Brilliance of the Seas eastbound Transatlantic cruise.
Chicago was also shown on the poolside screen on the recent Adventure cruise to Norway - given that this was during the UK half term there were over 500 children on board. Edited by little britain

RCI is aiming to attract a wide range of guests including mult-generational passengers. Doing so does not require that they lower their entertainment options to meet the lowest common denominator. If you feel that "risque" entertainment includes Chicago, how would you classify the Quest or some of the questions featured on the Love and Marriage Game, and how would you rate the underlying theme of Momma Mia?

Well, I imagine they want their marquee shows to have a family friendly reputation. things like Quest and LaM have disclaimers before the show starts and in the compass. I personally don't have any problem with the show, and I hope it will still be on board when I am on the Allure for the 1st time in February. I'm a mid 30's, no kids having, fun time kind of person. It's near impossible to put something out that offends me ha!

They will be 13 and 8.

I just wanted to be sure not to take them to something that might be a little above PG.......:o

Maybe I should rent the movie. I think I have seen it, but it's been a very long time.

I think we would have a good time on a cruise together . You reallllllllly have to go beyond the fringe to shock or offend me. *LOL* 30 + years as an EMT and 9-1-1 dispatcher will do that to you :)

My kids are all grown now , but even when they were younger we weren't that strict with what they watched. Of course we didn't let them watch porn or graphic gore and blood.

But plays like we are talking about here , my kids would have enjoyed the music and dancing and sets and not given a darn about "OOOOOOOOOO the girl cheated on her husband and then shot the guy" or "the girl doesn't know which guy is her father"

I hope your right! We are sailing on Independence Oct 2015 and I'm sort of bumming that there is no Broadway style show nor do they have a 3 D movie set up in the theater like her sister ships Freedom and Liberty. I wonder why??

FR will be in drydock for the entire month of January -- plenty of time to change sets etc. for the Theater. Keeping our fingers crossed for Hairspray as we are booked on FR for 2-22-2015 and 5-17-2015

If family friendly is going to be the criterion for their marquee shows, how do you explain the decision to add Mamma Mia to the Quantum? The underlying theme is certainly adult and might cause younger children to raise embarrassing questions. I'm with you and find nothing especially embarrassing about any of the theatrical productions on RCI ships and love the music in each of them, but people who find Chicago's theme to be "risque" may have similar problems with Mamma Mia.

Just be sure to rent the 2007 movie, NOT the 1988 one!
