BumperII Posted June 29, 2014 #180 Share Posted June 29, 2014 Ha Ha! My initials aren't S.P.! Actually we're up on a hill, so get a distant view to Port Angeles - mainly pulp mill! We can see the shipping, too. Nice, except the person being quoted has the initials T. F. (Tina Fey of Saturday Night Live) The person with initials S.P. has never been quoted as seeing Russia from her home.
GeorgesGal Posted June 29, 2014 #181 Share Posted June 29, 2014 So happy to hear all on board are fine, and the Westy is on her way again. Had seen mention of the fire on FOX this morning on one of the trailers at the bottom of the screen, but no more info before I turned it off. Hope all goes well for the rest of the cruise and they take care of any bugs that might still be outstanding, since I'll be on her next spring. geocruiser Posted June 29, 2014 #182 Share Posted June 29, 2014 Very happy to hear that Westerdam is on her way. I think the crew/ staff/ officers and Captain should get a big thank you a and a giant hug for keeping all souls safe. Fighting a fire on a cruise ship (or any where) must be frighten. They risked themselves to save others and their ship. A job well done.
navybankerteacher Posted June 29, 2014 #183 Share Posted June 29, 2014 Sorry to go a little off topic but how does Victoria get classified as a "distant foreign port" under the PVSA? Are ports in Mexico classified the same? Good question - same would apply to Ensenada, Mexico for ships returning to California ports from Hawaii. Victoria is NOT a "distant foreign port", nor is Ensenada. All that's required for round trips from the same US city is any foreign port. Distant foreign port is required for a cruise that starts in one us Port and returns to another. Interesting question: Could Westie have gone to Victoria from the scene of the fire for the required mop up and skipped it on the way back? Interesting question: Could Westie have gone to Victoria from the scene of the fire for the required mop up and skipped it on the way back? Roy With a cruise beginning and ending in same U.S. port, the foreign port call does not have to be the last port the ship visited. I never could understand why we could sail from FLL, visit near foreign ports, and have Key West as our last port before returning to FLL. It was explained to me, (I hope correctly), the ship simply has to visit a foreign port at some point during the cruise.

Rare LAFFNVEGAS Posted June 29, 2014 #192 Share Posted June 29, 2014 Yes, she could have Roy, but because the boiler room fire occurred in U.S. waters, the U.S. Coast Guard ordered her back to Seattle Yes that is the major reason but the Bean Counters reason is that they probably make more money on Shore Excursions going to Butchart Gardens this time of year than the Shore Excursions in Sitka. They would not have had time to set up sending passengers to Butchart Gardens and time wise they still would have had to miss a port. They have missed 17 hours of Sea Time travel. Most of the time when there is a port to be missed it is most likely going to be the one they have to tender in.
PathfinderEss Posted June 29, 2014 #193 Share Posted June 29, 2014 I could be wrong but according to the tracker information the Westerdam is speeding along at 23.1 kn heading for Port Angeles. Seems awful fast to me.

Not to mention the cost of getting parts to the Island when the odds are much better that Seattle could get HAL what they needed to get under way sooner. Lisa - I really doubt that shore excursions had anything to do with why Seattle was selected. If you had 2,000+ passengers who might have to disembark, getting back to Seattle was a much better choice.
