Suefranss Posted July 6, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 6, 2014 I have purchased a couple of wonderful maxi dresses that I plan to take on my upcoming cruise. My question is this: should I purchase some sort of slip to wear under them? One of them has a lot of white, and I am sure that you can see through it in the right light. I don't wear dresses much, but I remember that slips can be very uncomfortable, and twist around under a dress or skirt. If I need one, what kind should I get, and where should I look to purchase one? Thanks all!
IrishLassie Posted July 6, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 6, 2014 I never wear slips any more, especially in the tropics! Way to hot. I wouldn't worry about the white one, you'll never see a lot of the people who will see you again!! Have fun on your cruise. :D
JanineM Posted July 6, 2014 #3 Share Posted July 6, 2014 I wouldn't wear a slip under a casual dress, but I have worn shorts!
CHEZMARYLOU Posted July 6, 2014 #4 Share Posted July 6, 2014 I wear a half slip under some dresses, especially if they cling. Seems to make the dress lay better. Mary Lou
crzndeb Posted July 6, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 6, 2014 I also always pack a half slip for some of my more see through dresses.
cb at sea Posted July 6, 2014 #6 Share Posted July 6, 2014 No! If a dress is that thin and see-thru, I don't buy it! I can't imagine dealing with a slip in warm weather....I might if it were wintertime and I was wearing stockings....static and all that.
Rare Lois R Posted July 6, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 6, 2014 Another no. I haven't owned a slip in years and years and years.... and....well, I can't remember the last time I ever owned one.
Laurie S. Posted July 6, 2014 #8 Share Posted July 6, 2014 I haven't worn a slip since high school and I graduated in 1970. So what if a dress is see through? All anyone will see are your legs. Have some fun!
OCruisers Posted July 6, 2014 #9 Share Posted July 6, 2014 No slips for me! Haven't worn one in decades! :D LuLu
sjb317 Posted July 6, 2014 #10 Share Posted July 6, 2014 No slip for me since high school and that was the early 70's! And definitely, not on a cruise! Sherri:)
cruisinwithmaandpa Posted July 7, 2014 #11 Share Posted July 7, 2014 Buy some shape wear if you are worried about being see through. Otherwise I wouldn't wear it.
royalcruz Posted July 7, 2014 #12 Share Posted July 7, 2014 I wear half slips if I wear a jersey dress, to prevent clinging. They are also good if the dress is thin, to rid yourself of panty lines.
hrhdhd Posted July 7, 2014 #13 Share Posted July 7, 2014 I now have a few pairs of Jockey's Skimmies Slipshorts and find them useful for skirts and dresses when I don't really want to wear shapewear but I'm worried about lines or show-through. They come in several colors, lengths, and styles; the wicking ones are good for warmer weather. Quite a few colors are on sale at jockey.com
Rare Scrapnana Posted July 7, 2014 #14 Share Posted July 7, 2014 I do wear a half slip with thin fabric or knits.
Cozzette2 Posted July 7, 2014 #15 Share Posted July 7, 2014 Lets see this will date me but I wear petti pants , I guess they might still be called that and they are more to keep my legs chafing on a hot day.
pezhead Posted July 7, 2014 #16 Share Posted July 7, 2014 (edited) Shapewear shorts, they give me the cleaner line. I wear skirts and sandals for work all summer and always have a pair on underneath. Plus I'm a 1990's product of Parochial education, I have a mental block about fully bare legs under a skirt. Carolfay Posted July 7, 2014 #17 Share Posted July 7, 2014 I try to buy dresses and skirts that have a slip or liner sewn in. Otherwise, my little half slips keep the fabric from clinging around my legs and hips. The see-through issue doesn't usually worry me too much. Suefranss Posted July 7, 2014 Author #18 Share Posted July 7, 2014 Oops! I forgot to mention that the cruise is to Alaska, so being hot is not too much of a worry. Thanks for all your great advice.
klauer Posted July 7, 2014 #19 Share Posted July 7, 2014 I don't think that I've worn a slip in 25+ years, but I would guess that you could find one in the lingerie department of a department store. I have some short, very thin Spanx that I wear if panty lines could show.
mousey Posted July 7, 2014 #20 Share Posted July 7, 2014 I haven't worn slips in years either because I rarely where dresses and none of my skirts are see-through. I would imagine you could find slips for sale at any of the larger department stores such as Penny's, Macy's, Dillard's, etc.
BratDet Posted July 8, 2014 #21 Share Posted July 8, 2014 slips in DECADES, but I still own one.....hahaha Had on a maxi-dress yesterday....no slip. I did decide to buy some "boy shorts", to see if it would give a cleaner line.... but I don't think anyone needs to wear a slip these days. My advice, wear the white one on an overcast day. ;) if not wearing a slip makes you self-conscious... Bernadette
splash0306 Posted July 8, 2014 #22 Share Posted July 8, 2014 Lets see this will date me but I wear petti pants , I guess they might still be called that and they are more to keep my legs chafing on a hot day. Petti pants for me too. No chafing
kleo30 Posted July 9, 2014 #23 Share Posted July 9, 2014 I do wear a slip, but it is a shapewear slip, so more for smoothing and less for modesty.
CHEZMARYLOU Posted July 9, 2014 #24 Share Posted July 9, 2014 I replied earlier that I do wear a half slip some time. The need for this was brought home to me at church on Sunday. A newly ordained Deacon was helping to serve Communion. She had on a somewhat tight, clingy light colored dress and black panties. IMO this was tacky under any circumstances but particularly tacky in this circumstance. A light colored slip would certainly have helped.
