Theft on Oasis

Recommended Posts

Was on th L.O.T.S. Western Med, 14th - 21st Sep. On day 2 we were by the pool taking some pics. Had a cocktail and a lay down for half an hour, then went down to the cabin. About 40 minutes later we realised that our camera wasn't in the pool bag, went back up and it wasn't there either. Checked at the pool bar, with pool staff, and then Guest Relations every day. Nope. Even put a notice on the notice board saying "at least leave the memory card in an envelope at G.R". No luck. There really are some low life inconsiderate thieving scum everywhere you go, so be careful folks. (p.s. we went into Nice the next day and bought a new camera).

I agree that stealing your camera was a terrible thing for someone to do.

But the chances of that person READING your notice are MINUSCULE!

You do realize that, right?

On an embarakation day we got on the ship early, and there was a cell phone tucked in on a side of an armchair in the waiting area. We didn't know if the owner just got on the ship, or left that morning, so we kept the phone hoping he will call.

Yes, he called from his wife's phone, we answered, he boarded the ship, so it was easy for him to pick up the phone on our deck by the elevators. We didn't give him our cabin number. Saw the family a few times on the ship.

Recently a Cruise Critic passenger's 10 year-old kid stole a watch only for her to be made a RCI for treating her kid like a thief. As long as our society tolerates the, "MAH BABY DIDN'T DO NOTHING!" we will have things stolen from under us.

That was a hilarious thread wasn't it? :D

a couple of years ago, I had my nails done the Thursday before our Saturday departure cruise.. took my 3+ carat engagement/wedding ring off - didn't want lotion in it! After I left the nail salon I reached into the side pocket of my purse to get my ring - missing! After searching, called my insurance agent... then followed his advice of calling the police - THEY HAD IT! The people behind us at the nail salon had found it - didn't know/trust the people there - took it directly to the police! (Sadly, 2 years later, my husband lost my ring for real, thankful for homeowner's insurance!)....

then.. the first night of the afore-mentioned cruise (Crown Princess) - as I was getting undressed, I felt an empty chain - my 1.5 carat journey pendant was missing. Hubby went to guest services - someone had turned it in!

Lastly... shopping at the Billabong store in the Planet Hollywood mall in Las Vegas last week - I set my Maui Jim sunglasses down while I tried on shoes - walked out of the store without them called the store when I realized they were missing - they didn't have them, but wrote down my number to call if they showed up. They called me the next morning!

Restoring my faith in humanity!

Oh yes I do realise it. I also accepted that even if they did read it, if

their morals were so low that they'd keep the camera, then they'd hardly feel inclined to hand in the memory card. It was suggested by a fellow traveller, and I thought "well, what have I got to lose".

Found an Iphone once in fort Lauderdale laying in the road.

I called the first number in the phone and let them know I had the phone.

About an hour later a gentleman called to say it was his phone, he was in a bike race when he dropped his phone. Very grateful to get his phone back, he picked it up at our hotel.

Later that day the front desk called to say I had an envelope there. The gentleman was a doctor and that phone held numerous contacts. The good doctor left a very nice thank you card and a gift card for us to a restaurant.

Have found my share of cruise cards aboard ship always turn them in .

I've only had one experience. I am rough on watches, so I don't buy expensive ones. I recently got tired of digital watches and decided to buy a gold (color) analog watch. I think I was afraid I was going to forget how to tell time the analog way. I think its a nice looking watch, but any trained eye can tell quickly its a $50 watch from the mall Kiosk. I put the watch in my shoe while I was in the pool alone after coming back from the port early. I swam for about an hour, got out of the pool, walked about 10 feet in my shoes and realized the watch wasn't there. I checked every where including guest services. It never showed up. A minor disappointment, but I have another one to lose on Freedom next year.

I had something a lot more traumatic get lost than a camera. My young daughter is diabetic and years ago I left her testing kit and insulin on a table in the windjammer. Not 3 minutes later we go to the table and it's gone, removed by a not very nice lady so her family could sit down. She gave it to a waiter and expressed no remorse.

For an hour we scoure the windjammer and never found the kit. By the end of our search I was practically hyperventilating. The ship's doctor bailed us out but I learned two things that day. Always bring back up insulin on vacation and only leave things out of your sight that you're willing to part with. Cruise or no cruise.

Well, Paulxyz.....I was trying to offer a solution to a problem and you're more interested in criticizing me.

They do have security cameras in most public places on the ship....take a look around next time. There are alot of them. There are more and more of them being installed as 'situations' occur on ships, trust me.

Yes, looking at security tapes is time consuming and boring, but it shows an interest from the ship's staff that they care about their clients. I'm not talking about losing a hankie or an elastic, but cameras, wallets, moneyclips are things of value.

No matter how much they care about their clients, it's simply not practical for ship personnel to search security footage for every lost wallet, pair of designer sunglasses or camera, which would be dozens every day.

Even if they did, here's how it would go:

RCI: "Sir we have you on tape taking these glasses off a pool chair"

Thief: "Oh yeah I saw someone left them behind. I gave them to a crew member, I forget who. He said he would take them to Guest Services for me."

RCI: "Guest Services doesn't have them"

Thief: <shrug>

RCI: "Ummmmm, have a nice day?"

Not much they can do at that point.

That seems like the right thing to do, she may not have known how long it had been there and getting something important to a crew member seems the right thing to go. If it was only 3 minutes, couldn't the Windjammer Manager find out who received it?

It was the wrong thing to do...a terrible thing to do. We had personal effects and glasses of water on the table. My daughter was sitting there but went to her mommy and a minute later we saw a lady in the process of cleaning our table to use it.

She was very unapologetic and dismissive, I'm proud to say I've never hit a woman even after that incident.

I have to say that one time several years ago we were just getting on board and I spotted a wallet under a chair in the reception area. When I picked it up it was stuffed with cash!! So much so that it could hardly close. Took me three tries to get a crew member to take it and bring it to the purser's office. I never found out if the person it belonged to got it back. I did however always feel good that I had turned it in. I kept thinking how awful I would feel if it was my wallet with all my family's vacation money inside gone.

Unfortunately, sometimes when cruising people tend to think of the ship as their home away from home - and forget that there are dishonest (and worse) people everywhere. It is a good reminder that whether at home or on vacation, it is always smart to be careful with your belongings (and yourself for that matter) and use the same precautions you would anywhere.

I work as a law enforcement officer at an international airport and people constantly leave their bags unattended to go eat or go to the bathroom. Not only that, they will also plug their electronics at a charging station and leave.

When confronted they say, "I only went to the bathroom" or "I just went to go eat" or a host of other excuses.

It only takes a second for your stuff to be stolen. People seem to think an airport is this magical safety bubble where crime doesn't happen. Believe me, it does. There are a bunch of things that are turned in by honest people but there are also times when the item is gone forever.

I know this thread started by someone that accidentally left something, but you'd be surprised how many people PURPOSELY leave their items unattended in airports. And yes, there are many cameras in the airport but there can be gaps in the coverage or the camera was turned the wrong way. There are many times that the location we need to view isn't caught on camera.

I'm reporting this JUST as an FYI, not to provoke a lecture or start a flame war.

I just want to pass on a warning. My Chanel sunglasses were stolen by another passenger this week on Oasis. I set them down on a ledge in the Opal theater during bingo and absent-mindedly walked away at the end of bingo. I returned within 5-7 minutes, before the crew had even started to clean up. By the time I returned, the sunglasses were gone, never to be seen again.

I had hoped someone turned them into guest services, but no such luck -- the concierge even went down to guest services to go through the lost and found himself.

When I shared the info with some of the crew, they told me that other items, such as iPhones and iPads, had also gone missing.

Moral of the story: While it's absolutely each passenger's responsibility to keep track of their own possessions, and it's my own fault for walking away from my sunglasses, each passenger needs to be aware that theft can and does happen on board ships.

I never doubted that it would happen on board ships. As fun as cruising is, it's still a public place. We need to keep an eye on our goods.

On a recent cruise we were sitting by the pool and noticed that someone had left there Kindle behind on a sunbed, we called a member of staff over who said he would check to see whether they came back for it if not he would hand it in.

We didn't want to pick it up in case anyone thought we were stealing it, but I would have felt happier handing it in to guest relations.

I lost a pair of prescription glasses once on a cruise and did keep going to Guest relations, they kept assuring me that none had been handed in as there was nothing written in their lost property book, however one day when I was standing at GR a waiter handed in a pair of glasses and they were just put under a counter in a box, when I queried this I was told that they could tell that they weren't glasses of any value so weren't worth writing in the book, so after that I asked to look through the box and low and behold there were my glasses. They were invaluable to me.

This was several years ago so hopefully a better system is in place.

Hope the person got their Kindle back.

Thieves are thieves on land and sea. Last week on my Explorer cruise I turned in 2 seapasses and someone's pink and black backpack. Hopefully the got them back. And for that good deed I won 400.00 in the casino that night. Karma does exist.

The older I get, the more I am losing my mind and things, especially while having fun and drinking. I've lost plenty on cruise ships, all turned into guest services by honest staff or patrons. Prescription sunglasses, hats, cameras. My recent cruise, I lost my Camera, on Carnival. No one turned it in and guest services could not even be bothered to act like they cared. The woman in line in front of me had her I phone stolen while she laid it down in a gift shop. I refer to it as the "ship of thieves".

I even offered a $200 reward for the camera. It wasn't the camera I wanted, it was the pictures. My husband has already replaced the camera. I was upset at the loss, but have to let it go. It's not like I lost an eye.
