Sugar-high: Allure of the Seas...am I out of touch?

I am someone who does not drink coffee, soda, alcohol, red meat, or smoke. I'm not a big dessert fan. I'm fairly active and healthy.

BUT when I go on a cruise I love my desserts. Just like my vacation is a treat, so are some of the foods I eat. Yes, I like candy on my vacation. Yes, I like soft serve on my vacation.

I don't think I'm going to die because of some indulgence here and there!

Well stated,

No you are not out of touch at all. In fact, you represent a dieing breed of people who aren't afraid to open their mouths when something isn't right. Obesity is at an all time high and it is still growing. Yet, in this day and age, people aren't allowed to say anything because it might hurt someone's feelings. To you, I say bravo. Personally, I think it's awful selfish to mind our own business and ignore this problem. Some of us do care about the health of others and don't have a problem spreading the word on how bad these carbohydrates are for people.

Thank you for educating us. Without your care and concern, I wouldn't have known that eating a cupcake or two over the course of a week was so bad for me, nobody ever told me that!

Please, enlighten me as to what you think is appropriate to eat during one's cruise? I'm sure what you eat would be fine - raw vegetables with no butter/salt/sauce and water for the week? That's what you would eat, since anything else is bad for you, right? Maybe some broiled chicken is ok once in a while, provided, of course, again - no salt or sauce. But I'm not sure if that's ok. Can you let me know? I suppose you abstain from all coffee, tea, lemonade, fruit juices, and of course alcohol, yes? Given how bad all those things are? Is sparkling water ok, or should it just be plain water?

How do you reconcile the damage cruise ships do to the ecosystem with your desire to make sure that everyone be healthy? If you have everyone's best interest at heart and care so much, shouldn't you be avoiding activities that can cause others harm? Cruising is certainly not harm-free.

The first time someone paid $4 for a cupcake was the death of the Midnight Buffet, which IMO, featured significantly more well prepared and special foods than a cupcake shop.

Don't worry, the cupcake trend is dying out and the shops will close. But if people want it, I am all for it. I don't personally want it but nothing against those wanting and willing to spend.

A cruise is a gluttons delight. it doesn't NEED to be, but it is set up as one. Can't live life like that all the time, but for a week or two a year, not a big deal.

I heard eating any food is bad for us. With the amount of toxins in the air, breathing is bad for us too.

LOL - I'm not so much offended as annoyed by individuals who express such basic information with such an air of superiority.

Exactly. Basic information with the air of superiority, while also failing to mention all the other bad things people consume. Sugar and cigarettes arent the only things that are bad for you. I have never met one absolutely perfect person with not one vice. Problem is some people think the things they choose to do are not vices.

Its a treat and people love treats especially on vacation.

No there are not cupcakes are in the windjammer...that I have ever seen.

In fact the deserts in the WJ are usually not worth the calories to me but a great ice cream cone is.

As long as its profitable RCCL and all other cruise lines will have spaces for sugar.

On NCL Getaway Carlos bake shop was busy and so was the gelato stand even though you could get ice cream in the buffet.

I am astounded at all the pay$$ shops selling sugar on Allure:

* "Candy Beach Sweets"

* "Cupcake Cupboard"

* "Ice Cream Parlor"

I have no interest in desserts, and I thought most people were "over that" as well. Obesity, fitness, overall health concerns, valuing what we put in our bodies, etc.etc.... I thought the era of sugars & refined carbs was well-behind us. I don't know anyone who eats in excess anymore.

Is my perception completely out-of-whack? Do people still line up to pay for cupcakes/icecream/candy? All of those things are free in the Windjammer. Why would anybody spend additional $$ for things that are FREE IN WINDJAMMER, & are known to harm them?

I guess I'm puzzled why Royal Caribbean would devote so many shops to selling sugar items that most people no longer consume regularly due to the known health risks. Is Royal able to turn a profit off of the few people who don't know better?

I guess I look at it the same as cigarettes. Imagine if Royal had at least 3 stores selling all sorts of tobacco & cigs. The tide has turned, nobody chooses smoking anymore unless they are already completely hooked. Consumption of sugar items is a dying trend, so I don't understand why Royal devoted so much space to that behavior... especially when they offer the same sugar for free in Windjammer. Who would pay for cupcakes?

Are you kidding me!Lol

Look around anywhere you are.Americans are fat plain and simple.They eat high calorie foods rich w sugar day in and day out with no reguard to portion control.Top that with no exercise and this is what you get. Look at todays kids,most are overweight or heading that way.My kids are as thinas I was as a child and people think they are malnourished or something because todays society thinks fat is normal.Drives me nuts.You are what you eat.

Lol but to get back to what you said.No society isnt over this.Quite obviously.Look around on the pool deck.Are most people in shape or fat?Look around in dining room.Plates are filled to the gills with pastrys,potatoes foods high in carbs.Very seldom you see people eating fruits and vegatables that arent covered in butter and sugar.

Ok rant over.Start exercising people!And eat right!

Its all about choices.The right foods are there but people fail to choose them because everything needs to taste sweet.

This thread cracks me up. Notwithstanding the statement declared as if true in the OP, sugar does not harm you. Sure there is a select group of people who need to monotor their sugar, and sue more and more people are diabetic due to obesity, but that should not prevent the rest of us from enjoying a treat at sea, which probably provides a tidy profit to RCI.

Kids cruise and often they manage to have their parents purchase things for them and/or they have an allowance and choose to spend money on that stuff.

Unfortunately it is not just on the ships, I was in Georgetown last weekend and you should have seen the line coming out of DC Cupcakes. You would have thought they were giving them away. Saw a huge line then realized what it was.

As for the shops on board, yes it is vacation, enjoy is you wish. I don't see why it is an issue to have them on board, if you to indulge go for it. I have been on Allure twice and not had a cupcake, candy, or paid for ice cream. Not worth it me, but for others it is. Live and let live.

I can imagine your shock when you realized people still eat sugary desserts! Who knew, amirite? :rolleyes:

I would call your post a thinly veiled attempt to lord your perceived superiority over some random strangers on the Internet, but that would be inaccurate. It's not veiled at all.

Once again, more generalizations. DH is tall and underweight for his height. He also has all the medical problems in the family. Me, they are still trying to determine whether or not my thyroid is working properly, not blaming my weight issues on thyroid, but that is my only medical problem. Go figure. So your stick figure kids may or may not be healthy. To the casual observer - you can't tell. Just by looking at my DH and me you would think because I'm heavy I have all the health issues.

I have a friend who has had a number of health problems brought on by an accident about a decade ago. Because of a combination of factors her dr told her that her current size is where her set point is and unless she goes to a very restrictive diet she will stay at the weight she is.

So for your generalizations - not everyone you see walking around with extra pounds is unhealthy and not everyone you see with extra pounds is living it up in the cup cake shop.

None of this is saying as a country we don't have issues with weight. Much is education, time, preponderance of fast food places. Many have never had the opportunity to learn and appreciate good food. Some of us , over appreciate good food. :D

In other news, Royal Caribbean announced they have partnered with the WHO to introduce a revolutionary era in cruising called Destination Skinny. Beginning in January, Royal Caribbean passengers will not be allowed to consume sugary foods or beverages in state rooms or on state room balconies. Consumption of sugary foods will be prohibited in all interiors of the ship with exception of designated dining areas. Designated dining areas may vary from ship to ship. Consumption of sugary foods and beverages will be allowed in all designated smoking areas with exception of the casino where it is prohibited.

DC cupcake used to have a TV show that gave it a huge draw to people coming to DC. We ordered online(celebrating 2 birthdays) and got in the much shorter pick up line when we were down a few years ago.

I don't see what's wrong with a treat as part of a healthy balanced diet. Personally I'd rather have some good dark chocolate over a cocktail, bread, pasta etc. any day. It's all about choices. Simple carbs are all the same to your disgestive system no matter the form they were in when ingested.

OP, I hope you aren't eating bread, pasta or white potatoes or drinking cocktails or beer since you're against sugar (a simple carb).

What if the sugary stuff was smuggled inside some Rum Runners?

I agree with you 100%! I am also a person who struggles with weight but I don't sit at home eating sweets and fatty foods all day. I have health problems that run in my family that I have to deal with and its harder to lose weight. On the other hand, my 115 pound cousins eat everything they can get their hands on including sweets and fried foods and they don't gain a pound! I would never judge anyone.

If someone wants sweets on vacation, go for it! Vacation is a time to enjoy yourself and not be so hard on yourself. Thats just how I feel. :cool:

As a person who went from an index of 30, just over the obese line, to my ideal weight before going on Allure, once I reached my ideal weight I found a way to indulge myself and only gain 2 pounds that week, and I think that 2 pounds came on the trip home stuck in airports. I did visit Candy beach and bought small quantities of childhood favorites as a treat (After 6 miles on Allure's track that day in which I burned off 1000 calories). I probably had a cupcake or two during the week including the one my wife made in the class. There is also the Vitality Spa area outside the gym if the OP is so concerned.
