Merion_Mom Posted March 5, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 5, 2015 Others have posted that they smell smoke in the gym on Allure and/or Oasis. I never have, and wondered what THEY were smoking. ;) (j/k) I am sitting at a computer on Deck 7 in the Centrum on the Serenade of the Seas. FABULOUS live music. I am just enjoying the music and using my unlimited internet package that costs $189 for the week. The connectivity stinks. And speaking of "stinks"................. I am not paying attention to much of anything. Suddenly the thought enters my brain, "It really stinks of cigarette smoke in here." But that's not possible. I'm in the big, open Centrum. I still smell it. THE CASINO IS ON DECK 6 DIRECTLY BENEATH ME. One deck below, and somewhat recessed from where I am. But the smell is STRONG here. YUCK. So, to those of you who have posted about this kind of thing on other ships...............I now agree. That smoke REALLY travels!
Langley Cruisers Posted March 5, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 5, 2015 Yes, it is awful awful awful. Last year on our Serenade B2B, by the end of the first week my eyes were red and irritated from the terrible smoke drifting out of the casino. *sigh* Is Adriana still the Hotel Director, by chance? Last year on our Serenade B2B, by the end of the first week my eyes were red and irritated from the terrible smoke drifting out of the casino. *sigh* Is Adriana still the Hotel Director, by chance? She is. Serenade doesn't have sufficient ventilation in the casino to get rid of the smoke before it wafts out into the Centrum. It goes all the way up to Deck 12 and into the corridors a bit as well.
SadmanCruiser Posted March 5, 2015 #4 Share Posted March 5, 2015 The smell of smoke has always been worse on the small ships. On the Legend in 2013 I could smell it in the stairwell from 3 or 4 decks up. I know on the Rhapsody Suez cruise when the outside decks are closed that the smoke will drift from the casino as all the smokers are forced in there after dark. It's time Royal banned smoking inside completely. For the record I am a smoker and find it unpleasant to be in a smoke filled room - I don't smoke in my office or in my home and don't smoke in the inside areas of a cruise ship. wendychloecruiser Posted March 5, 2015 #6 Share Posted March 5, 2015 The worst ship I have ever been on regarding the smell of smoke is Quantum. The casino is directly below the centrum and there is a circular staircase that acts like a funnel directing all the smoke upwards into this area. It's a design disaster. People use the casino as a smoke hole, 24/7.

micmacmissy Posted March 5, 2015 #8 Share Posted March 5, 2015 This is one major reason I give Celebrity the edge over RCCL. Spent a great week on the Silhouette where there was no smoking anywhere inside...including the casino! We actually got to enjoy blackjack and slots in a smoke free environment...it was great! Big_G Posted March 5, 2015 #9 Share Posted March 5, 2015 (edited) We revisited Brilliance back in December after a long hiatus from that class and that was our first observation. On embarkation day the casino smelled badly inside and out and it wasn't even open yet. Usually it doesn't bother me but even I was taken aback. Great cruise but we avoided that area. bouhunter Posted March 5, 2015 #10 Share Posted March 5, 2015 It's hard to believe that a brand new ship like Quantum was not designed with a ventilation system in the casino to handle the smoke load. The designers had to know that the casino is the defacto smoking lounge. There is a new casino near our home that has huge, high indoor space (3-4 floors high). Ventilation outlets everywhere you look. It's 5X worse in regards to smoke than some of the older ones nearby with low ceilings. Go figure, I guess the engineers and architects haven't figured it out yet:D

The designers had to know that the casino is the defacto smoking lounge. The systems are designed to handle X number of air changes per hour, but with an open concept the smoke creeps out before the air handlers can effectively change the air. Add to that greater surface areas for the tar to build on and it becomes difficult to manage these larger / more open spaces. The casino would need to be more effectively sealed to contain the smoke better. Add to that the fact that the cleaning is never really a deep enough clean to remove residual residue, and there you go, a floating ashtray. Unfortunate. rubrrick Posted March 5, 2015 #13 Share Posted March 5, 2015 At least Merion Mom is on a cruise!!:D I can smell used smoke on any RC ship outside of the casino, where smoking is allowed. I also wish Royal Caribbean would stop allowing cigarette smoking anywhere inside of the ship. It does not stop me from having a great time cruising, but I do avoid the areas where I can smell cigarette smoke, which includes the casino. bigque Posted March 5, 2015 #14 Share Posted March 5, 2015 I remember when I was on Serenade there was a sports bar outside one entrance to the casino and I made the mistake of walking through there one day and the smell was so strong that I never went through there again! impatientlywaiting Posted March 5, 2015 #15 Share Posted March 5, 2015 The smoke smell from the casino on the Legend is so bad it "drifts" a third of the way down into the theater. Ridiculous.

What RCI Cruise Ship are you boarding in LV? :D With enough filtration (or the right kind of filtration) a forced air system could help.

The casino is directly below the centrum and there is a circular staircase that acts like a funnel directing all the smoke upwards into this area. It's a design disaster. People use the casino as a smoke hole, 24/7. I just sailed on the Quantum - twice - and while I found the casino smoke-filled, I did not experience the smoke being noticeable elsewhere. This is SO obvious. Before I went to bed, after I typed out the OP, my eyes were actually reacting/stinging/watering slightly. And I am not an obnoxious, arm-waving, cough-coughing anti-smoker. I was not TRYING to notice it - I hope that this is obvious in my OP. The smoke imposed itself upon my attention. This experience on Serenade is the worst that I have ever had. There seems to be NO attempt to ventilate the casino. They just "let it happen". :(

mollyeilis Posted March 6, 2015 #20 Share Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) " So, to those of you who have posted about this kind of thing on other ships...............I now agree." Thank goodness. I had such a hard time on Vision in October. The weather went bad, the smokers went indoors, and the Centrum became impossible. Since we were in a panoramic room just off the Centrum, it was becoming a problem. One more day of bad weather and it would have been in our room and I would have been having a very hard time. Thankfully it cleared up. I'm not an obnoxious, etc, anti-smoker person either. I'm just the daughter of smokers (who were kids of smoking fathers, both of whom died of massive heart attacks in their 50s) who was born with allergies and slowly developed asthma thanks to the lung damage they caused before they stopped smoking in their houses. My stepmom still smokes and is a NICU nurse. I wish someone would sue her for being near their fragile newborn. It's vile. I have been very much affected by it; it physically harms me. If I cough near smoke, it's because I'm inhaling, you know, smoke, and healthy-ish lungs don't appreciate that. If I don't talk while going past smokers it's because I'm quietly holding my breath or slowly slowly exhaling so I'm not harmed. etc. Only when talking about it online, during discussions, am I as open about it. I'm not when in public. It's hard to believe that a brand new ship like Quantum was not designed with a ventilation system in the casino to handle the smoke load. The designers had to know that the casino is the defacto smoking lounge. As far as I can tell, there is NO such ventilation system. This is one major reason I give Celebrity the edge over RCCL. Spent a great week on the Silhouette where there was no smoking anywhere inside...including the casino! We actually got to enjoy blackjack and slots in a smoke free environment...it was great! Really???? Wow, I just looked it up. Time for me to explore Celebrity. DH could get his blackjack in and wouldn't have to bag his clothes and decontaminate before entering the stateroom. deliver42 Posted March 6, 2015 #22 Share Posted March 6, 2015 I'm a smoker, but I agree that smoking should be banned inside the ship, except the Voyager and Freedom series, because they have dedicated cigar lounges where anyone can smoke. They have excellent exhausts and no one else can smell smoke. I have no idea why they stopped this on the newer ships. It would stop a lot of the complaining, and everyone would be happy.By the way, NCL has put lounges on all their new ships.

Serenade has Vintages, after dry dock, right outside the casino!! The Sports Bar is a Pub now. The Pub maybe non smoking now? Still smoke smells though from the casino and the whole centrum is as well. Radiance too has the same problem. Perhaps on Quantum they didn't worry about the smoke smell because it will be NO smoking sometime in the future??:)
BamaGuy44 Posted March 6, 2015 #24 Share Posted March 6, 2015 I hate to hear that. One thing I liked on the Disney ships is I never had to smell smoke. There are some outdoor smoking areas but they're easily avoided. No casino so that eliminates the main indoor smoke source on most ships. I shake my head when people claim there's no way to smell smoke from an adjacent balcony or whatever, that you have to be RIGHT next to the person to smell their smoke. Those people obviously don't have my nose. Maybe I'm just super sensitive to it but it definitely carries a long way.

Smoke from casino was ridiculous in the photo gallery. I almost walked away without purchasing anything, but my sister really wanted to purchase one. So it's not just the smaller ships.
