Is there such a thing as too long?

Recommended Posts

I really thought this was going to be about something else...

;-)

FWIW, I think much more than 2 weeks, and it starts to get long. Work piles up, there are things to do at the house, etc. I suspect once we retire that will be less of an issue.

We have done B2B's on FOS several times and 14 nights isn't long enough for us and we don't do much of anything except relax. Of course, everyone has different things they enjoy, so what one person loves may bore someone else to tears.

Same for us. B2B on FOS last year doing nothing but relaxing. The only thing we pre-planned was our All Access Tour and our beach day at Nachi Cocom. We could have easily done another week, but there's this thing called "work" that gets in the way. May sound boring to some, but to us sitting by the Solarium with our Kindles and an umbrella drink is just about perfect. :)

Doing a repeat in September, and we can't wait.

Did a 13 day cruise from Hawaii to Ensenada. We didn't want to leave the islands. We loved each better than the other. On the crossing, back to Ensenada, we hit COLD,windy and wet weather. They had to close the outdoor decks, we couldn't even go on our balcony and we really hadn't planned well. We were thinking about all the things we would enjoy on the ship. This was the Legend, back before the bells and whistles were added. We really did everything they had to offer on the ship. We would gladly have done 13 days on our last Med cruise, so I think it depends on what you are looking for with the number of days.

The longest I've done is 12 days in the Med. 12 very full, very long days. I wouldn't say it was too long, but it was certainly exhausting! If the cruise had actually been a few days longer, either a couple of sea days or overnights, it would have been better! I envied the people who were staying on for the transatlantic leg of that one! I think I would have slept for the length of it!

I think too long for me would be an imbalance of too many sea days vs. port days. I like lots of ports, as exhausting as that can be.

Also, I get Caribbean'd out, so longer than 8 or 9 days in the Caribbean would probably push my limit. (We're not beach people, and we've already seen pretty much all of the major ports, many more than once).

I have no idea if a cruise can get too long but I do know that 7 nights is not nearly enough. Id love to try a B2B for a total of 14 nights sometimes but theres that work thing. :o

I have only ever been on 7 night cruises. I think personally I could handle 10. I would have to bring a ton of suitcases if we did that heck we already bring 3 large ones plus our carry ons for a 7 day

I think anything over a month brings on some additional concerns such as paying home bills credit cards etc and in having someone pop over to check on house etc. as for clothing--we pack almost the same amounts for month as for 7 days. Will add a bit for weather differences (92 degrees in Bali and 42 degrees in Tokyo begin and end of month long cruise/tour. 1 25 inch suitcase and 1 tote bag is total luggage for any trip

Yes...I get tired of the cruise after about 8 days....by day nine, I'm really for it to be over. Same with land vacations, unless I'm in a rental where I can cook...I get VERY tired of "eating out"....I know, most folks think eating out every meal is heaven, but not me! I also don't mind doing laundry....and I miss that on RCI!

As far as "relaxing"...I can do that at home....I'm lucky enough to be self-employed, so I can work my own hours, for the most part.

We've taken 3 12 niters (Medit.) and an 11 niter on the Quantum this past Feb. With a 7 niter only 1 weekend, but with a longer it's always nice to have to look forward to a another weekend before cruise is over. When we get home and have to shop and cook, the 12 niter seems so short. lol

Our longest has been 75 days ... and we loved every minute! Yes, you have to plan carefully to keep your bills paid, plants watered, etc, but it's really not that big a deal. You have to plan your wardrobe, your excursions, etc, very carefully, but again, not that big a deal.

We've also done two 35-day cruises. Getting ready for a 22-day cruise. Have 28 days booked on Adventure next winter (b2b2b2b)

We can't even conceive anymore of a cruise less than 3 weeks!

And, yes, one day we'll be taking a world cruise ...

Short answer, NO. DH and I have done everything from 4-12 night cruises. We try to do 10+ nights as much as possible. Our next two are 10 nights. When we retire we plan to do b2b2b2b at least once per year :-).

When we got off our only 12 night, we said, wow, that went fast and we weren't ready to leave.

Ive only ever done 7 day ones before and these are too short. I set out to find a 14 day one that interested me but could only find 11 so we are going with that this time. I suspect this will be too short also. Lots of things i wanted to try but never got around to doing on other ships.

I guess I'm definitely in the minority but before our 17 night Australia/NZ cruise was over I was ready to go back to work. I'm a "Type A" personality and missed the intellectual stimulation of work. I'm also a voracious reader but there were only so many days I was happy reading all day long. I do think things would have been different had the weather been better but we had day after day of overcast, rainy, cool weather which definitely limited pool/swimming time.

If we ever do such a long trip again in poor weather, I will seek out trivia games earlier.

My longest cruise was supposed to be 10 nights on the Explorer (it got cut down to 9 nights when the ship had to turn around for a medical emergency) but yes, I like longer cruises. I can easily see myself doing 14 or 15 nights, which would allow for a nice balance of relaxation and adventure. The longest I'd probably want to do is 21 nights but give me a quick week at home and I'd be ready to go again :D

I found 7 nights to be way too short, 10-12 nights are about right for me. I got a 14 mightier coming up in the summer and do wonder whether that is abit too long.

x2. I want to try a 10+ day but have to get the wife to buy off on it. She actually suggested we do a world cruise or at least a 30 day segment of one in 10 years after I retire from the Navy. I'm kind of liking the idea (even though I'll have spent quite a bit of time at sea by that point).

I was invited on a 12 Caribbean cruise on the Anthem of the Seas in February 2016. I have never sailed longer than an 8 day cruise. I had a really nice time but by the time it was over, I was glad to be going home. So here is my question ......Is there such a thing as a cruise being too long?

Who has gone on cruise for more than 8 days and what was your experience like. Thanks.

My longest was a 10 night cruise on Vision a few years ago. I've also done a nine night on Legend, and a couple of nine night 5/4 back to backs. I have not yet done a transatlantic or other itinerary that has a copious amount of seas days, so I guess that could factor in.

Thus far, I have not found a cruise that was too long. I've enjoyed each and every one of them. When I retire, I plan to pull a Mario and spend 50 (or so) weeks a year on a ship.

I've only done 2 7 day cruises. When I told people about my first one, EVERYONE said it was too long. By the final Saturday I was looking for hiding places on the ship so I wouldn't have to get off. :D I would LOVE to do a 12 or even 14 night cruise. My son is only 15 and he feels the same way. When I explained the concept of a b2b he was like "Genius!!!" LOL!

For us traveling to Florida, or especially Europe, is a huge deal and a 7 day cruise doesn't seem worth it. We have done a couple of 7 day cruises extending the vacation by spending a few extra days in Florida, which helps some. But generally we love long cruises...and we love B2B's.

The OP asks what we do with all the time we have when we spend a month on a cruise. We relax....no phones, no demands, no chores....just pure blissful time to go slow and do what we want to do. We love port days, and we usually book excursions because seeing the World is a big deal to us, but the sea days are equally wonderful.

Here's a Typical Sea Day for us:

Mornings. I like to sleep late, my husband is up early, as he likes to swim a few miles a day. When he returns we head to a late breakfast or early lunch, depending on how late I sleep. :) When I am on vacation I am not a slave to anyone's needs but my own.

Afternoons: Relaxing....The last cruise we were on we spent a good deal of our sea days laying on the sofa or in a lounge chair, with the balcony door open, enjoying the breeze and either reading or watching some movies/TV shows I loaded on to my iPad (I binge watched the first season of Outlander). Total peace and quiet. I might leave the room a few times to fill up my Coke cup and take a look at what's on sale that day. On occasion I will have a spa treatment. And sometimes we will head to the solarium and play a few games of cribbage or backgammon, enjoying the sun and the music.

Evenings: We dress for dinner, head to the Diamond lounge for a couple of drinks and a few appetizers. Then we head to dinner. After dinner we catch the nightly show, if it's something we are interested in. We wander around the ship, maybe have another drink and eventually we head to the casino to see if there is a poker game starting. We play poker until the game breaks up, usually around 1-2 AM. Then to bed.

Rinse/Repeat as desired. :D
