Mumsysailor Posted May 7, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 7, 2016 My first live thread of my own on this 7 day round trip to Alaska with friends. Please feel free to join the fun and laughter as we journey together. Friday 6th May 2016. It was rather chaotic at the Pan Pacific during the day as there were 3 ships in and the pavements were clogged up with luggage for a good part of the day. Having met up with friends earlier in the day for a bit of shopping the fun really began when 9 of us met up for a reunion meal at Mahoneys right across from the hotel. After some very nice food we adjourned to the lounge at the Pan Pacific for more drinks and very many laughs as we recalled our antics from past cruises together. At about 10pm we all went out to the terrace to wave off the three ships before retiring ready for our exciting day with our own Sailaway tomorrow. Saturday 7th May 2016. The day has arrived. As I look out of this beautiful hotel room I can see that our ship has arrived and will soon be our home for the next 7 days. I'll get a picture when we go down for breakfast in a while. Really looking forward to enjoying the camaraderie on a DAM ship once again.
Mtn2Sea Posted May 7, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 7, 2016 Looking forward to your live review. I remember my first live review gave me incentive to do more on the ship and try new food items so I'd have things to report. Enjoy your cruise!
Lizzie68 Posted May 7, 2016 #3 Share Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) It's all very well for you guys at the PP who just have to go down in the elevator to the terminal.;) I just got sat on the suitcase and got it closed (YAY! I kept it to one only!!) now to haul it to the car and start the drive into Vancouver - again. So looking forward to our group from the Sailaway Gang being together again, even if only for one week. We do know how to have fun, and we have learned there are some of our favourite crew members on board too. Edited May 7, 2016 by Lizzie68

sapper1 Posted May 7, 2016 #6 Share Posted May 7, 2016 I watched the NA sail under the Lion's Gate from our hotel room at the Pan Pacific early this morning. That's when I really began to get excited. Having a bit of a laugh here as we can hear the chimes and announcements on the NA from our hotel room. Having just gotten off the Westerdam after 33 days, I instinctively want to open the hotel room door so I can hear the announcement clearer. :) We had four suitcases when we arrived at the Pan Pacific after leaving the Westerdam and the hotel very graciously agreed to store two bags for us while we go to Alaska. We attended the dinner that Mumsysailor mentioned and were thrilled to be all together with old friends again. It was mentioned at dinner that if it weren't for Cruise Critic, none of us would have ever met each other.

Rare Scrapnana Posted May 7, 2016 #9 Share Posted May 7, 2016 I really enjoyed the get together last night despite the noise in the restaurant. It was great to see everyone again! It is a beautiful day (again) in Vancouver and we should have a gorgeous sail-away. Keeping my fingers crossed for a smooth embarkation process! Mumsysailor Posted May 7, 2016 Author #14 Share Posted May 7, 2016 Waiting for our suitcases to be collected from our hotel room. The next time we see them will be in the cabin. [emoji41] On the subject of our cabin, we decided to take an Oceanview this time - something we've never done before but not only does it cut down on the cost of our usual balcony room, we also thought we'd be spending so much time out and about on the decks on this trip that it would be a good time to give it a try. We tried an inside cabin when we did out Transatlantic a couple of years ago and couldn't stand the complete blackout so an Oceanview could be better. We'll post again once we've tried it. SilvertoGold Posted May 7, 2016 #15 Share Posted May 7, 2016 The N. Amsterdam is on the west dock (HAL's regular docking place) and the Ruby Princess is on the east. When you return, there will be three ships in, so maybe a bit of congestion. Hope you leave on schedule today. Yesterday the late departure messed up Seymour Narrows and the ships just went through around 9 am this morning. Have the BEST cruise!
Rare Vict0riann Posted May 7, 2016 #16 Share Posted May 7, 2016 For large cruise ships, marinetraffic.com shows only the N.A. and Ruby Princess. When I checked with him, DH said it was on the radio this morning. Maybe includes other ships. He did say the news said each cruise ship bring in about $2million to the Vancouver economy. Mumsysailor Posted May 7, 2016 Author #22 Share Posted May 7, 2016 Well I thought I was going to be able to report on an Oceanview cabin but thanks to the up-grade fairy at the check-in we find ourselves in our customary balcony room. What a very nice surprise! We went along to the Mariner's lunch which was very unexciting but adequate. We're now sitting in the Crow's Nest enjoying a glass of 'champagne' (sparkling wine) thanks to the Mariner Society. There are very few people here. I guess people are more interested in getting their luggage and getting unpacked than drinking at the moment. Embarkation was reasonably smooth given the long lines to clear US Border Agency. The automatic machines were not working for US and Canadian passport holders which didn't help. Another surprise was that our TA has provided us with dinner at the Pinnacle Grill. This is unusual for us Brits. We hear our Canadian and American friends get this quite frequently. Now we just need to co-ordinate our bookings with our fellow CCers to be sure the fun and laughter abound. The internet package is purchased and I'm off now to find some more to report on.
