What are your biggest cruise pet peeves?

My pet peeve is a land peeve too, and not too much a cruise ship peeve, as somehow I don't make it to the gym too much on a cruise:o:o:o, but when someone is just sitting at a machine for a while - and I'm trying to guess are they between reps, just resting, etc. Some of my favorite memories are bonding with my daughter at the cruise ship gym at night - as usually hardly anyone there.

An annoying issue to me is after a day in port when everyone is in line to re-board the ship there will be some people who act like they have never done this before (and yes I know some are newbees). They will wait until they get to the front of the line and act shocked that they have to get out their cruise card to return to ship. I can forgive this on the first or even second port for newbees but by the last port they should know this. So we all stand around while they dig through their bags trying to locate the card. This doesn't ruin my vacation but it is annoying.

This is my pet peeve at grocery stores, also. People get their items rung up, wait until the cashier is done, and then react as if they are surprised they are actually having to pay instead of having credit card or cash out and ready.

Bill we were on a cruise once and an elderly couple were trying to get on and many who came after them rushed into the elevator, finally someone stood in front of the open elevator blocking the on rushers to allow the couple on. I had a situation where a couple in front of me, her husband was in a wheel chair and needed to go two floors beyond mine, I told them go ahead I would ride the elevator up and back down. Couldn't see her pushing her DH out to let me out then have to re enter again. I was in no hurry.

Because I go, get what I want in about 2 minutes and my wife has to examine every item at every station before making up her mind, so that won't work.

We're similar on that front. I tend to take a lot less time grabbing some food. The other problem is that we don't necessarily go for the same areas of the buffet, so I have, at times, filled a plate for myself, then I'm wandering around, trying to find my wife (generally being in the way of other people), and figure out if she's still in the buffet line somewhere, or if she's found a table...

I think the idea of grabbing a table and taking turns going up to the buffet is fairly efficient.

:) Yes, I've encountered that, as well. Really having noticed the issue on cruises with the SeaPass card, but definitely at the grocery check-out.

Mine is those FEW folks that have an Entitled Attitude, acting as though they were the most important person in the Universe and they should be treated accordingly. This also relates to some of them treating staff unkindly.

No one is better than anyone else, whether you are in the best cabin or the worst. We all paid our fare.

Happy Cruising To All!

Be thankful the old days are all but gone where the people at the last second would get out their checkbook and start writing out the check when the cashier finished. The they would have to hunt for their ID.

2) People who think it's smart to go to the Windjammer (or any other ship's buffet) and save a table while their partner goes to get food, then they go. How is that smarter than just getting food together and then finding a table together? They are wasting valuable time when someone has a tray of food and no table, but someone with no food is hogging a table.

I also disagree with no. 2. I don't see any big deal with this one, my wife and I do it. Otherwise, she has to manage her pocketbook while trying to get food which is awkward for her.

You're joking, right?

Nope. But if you are going to quote on my comment don't remove half of what I post.

Based on other threads I would say I'm not the only one with this peeve.

Another good point. That is especially an issue on embarkation day, when most people have carry-on bags with them. You don't want to be trying to keep those with you while going through the buffet line. Who knows, maybe we'll convince groucho not to be peeved the next time he sees this.

Sorry Groucho. I feel like we are all ganging up on you. We are not. NOW.....if you said "people sitting there playing cards" THAT would be a different story. :):):)

Just to defend the guy a bit, I don't think he was expressing surprise that this was a peeve of yours so much as surprise that this is something you actually encounter on a cruise. (I don't believe I've ever seen a dog in a stroller on a cruise ship, but I don't doubt it has happened.) So, I don't think only quoting that portion of it was not meant to make you look bad in any way, but rather to focus on that part of your post.

Generally, I think it's fine to only quote part of someone's post, as long as you're not doing it to try to take something out of context (and I don't think that was the intent here).

Parents who treat the ship like a giant play pen....I can't discipline their kids but I would love to give the parents a piece of my mind. This is why we cruise during the school year, so we don't have to put up with other people's kids.

Unfortunately we are finding more and more that people no longer care about pulling their kids out of school for a week. [emoji20]

My pet peeve is someone who occupies a table in the buffet area, while reading a book. No sign of food, just a cup of coffee, sitting at a table with several unoccupied chairs, while reading a book. (I've seen it on more than one cruise).

Maybe these people had the book with them, finished their meal, the waitstaff cleared away their dishes, etc., and they pulled out their book and stayed there reading while others are looking for somewhere to sit and eat.

After the first time I saw this, I came up with a solution. We walked around looking for someplace to sit down and eat. I spotted this person quietly sipping coffee and reading a book. No one else was at the table and there were unoccupied chairs. So I politely asked if the seats were taken, was told "no", so we sat down and started to eat. The person got up a left. Problem solved! We do it every time it's necessary. Some people leave, some stay and we have a nice conversation. Works every time! :D

There was a reason I did that. I wasn't trying to be offensive, but rather to address that portion of your comment. I was surprised that you saw a dog in a stroller. I seriously thought you were joking.

When my husband & I enter the WJ, we will get our food together, wait on each other then look for our table, however when there was our daughter and husbands Sister, then we went to the table, 1 stayed while the rest got their food, returned and our daughter got hers. This worked well when several were in our party. We have also asked others to join us if we see they are looking for a table.

Having worked at an animal hospital for a number of years, seeing a dog in a stroller was no uncommon.

You are correct. I thought the person was joking about seeing a dog in a stroller on a cruise. That's the reason for the partial quote.

I think I must be the only person in the world who is bothered by this as I've never heard anyone else complain but my pet peeve is the plastic plates in the buffet.

I rarely eat in the Windjammer, not because I don't like the food but because I don't like eating from the plates.

I have been on 10 cruises with RCI on 9 different ships and I don't recall ever seeing a plastic plate in the Windjammer.

I also have to comment on #2. How long does it really take to get your food? Not long for me, maybe 5 minutes max and then DH goes. Like a previous poster mentioned if we have gotten a large table and someone can't find a seat, we always say they are welcome to join us. There may be folks who take a really long time to get their food, but I really don't think that is generally true and the "time wasted" as you put it is really not much time at all. :)

Having to get up earlier than the chair hogs and actually occupying a chair at 7:30 am!

Also with everyone else on the rudeness to staff. I never find it excusable to yell at anyone. I find people are more apt to help if you are kind but then again, entitled people don't think about anyone else but themselves.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned this one..

The past two cruises I've been amazed at the people that seem to think they can self-carry their luggage off the ship so they can disembark first. It's a great idea if you're capable, but I've seen suitcases bounced down stairwells and passengers walking back and forth dragging one case at a time, all this does it bump up the times for everyone else..

Reading the previous pet peeves reminds me how common sense, basic manners and simple courtesy to fellow passengers go a long way to enhance the cruising experience for everyone. Unfortunately there will always be people who believe specific rules don't apply to them, i.e. smokers on balconies.

My pet peeve is the strong odor of tobacco that permeates the entire casino. I understand there are designated smoking areas within the confines of the casino. However I find the air filtration systems in the casinos are inadequate for clearing the air and providing a clean & healthy environment. As much as I enjoy sitting at the gaming tables and donating my money, the often overpowering tobacco stench prevents me from doing so.
