Seapass card is outside stateroom in a sealed envelope???

Recommended Posts

Is that for all ships? Our first RCI cruise will be next March on the Allure.

I believe Allure uses the traditional check in agents at a desk where you get your Seapass cards. We've never sailed on her or any Oasis class ships. I believe only Quantum class ships use the mobile check in agents.

This system has been in place on certain ships since November of 2014. Almost 2 years later, I have NOT read one report of an incident. As DonnaK stated, there is no need to worry.

We were recently on the Quantum and got our Seapass card when we checked in .

In Asia? Probably a different system there.

It didn't appear to turn off the AC, only the lights, on our two 12 nights Anthem cruises we did this year, which went as far south as Barbados on the eastern and Roatan on the western itinerary. Our cabin temperature remained constant whether the card was in or out of that slot.

Yes. The first time I was on a ship that utilized this system, I fashioned a card for the slot out of the paper announcements that they leave in the room (some were on heavier card stock as opposed to regular paper). Before I thought of that, I left my card in the slot and made sure that my husband had his card whenever we went out, but then I had to stay with him and use his card around the ship throughout the day

On our 2 Anthem cruises, the AC blower did turn off when the card was removed. I wonder if it is cabin specific?

Confused.

Hi all, when we were on our Anthem cruise we met a couple who accidently entered the wrong room, They unpacked their carryons and were having a glass of wine when the real couple arrived and were quite pissed. The couple that entered the room had switched up a room number and entered room 06 instead of 60. They did not read the name on the card. In their excitement they had made an honest mistake.;)

Donna, I love your idea of using a grocery store card! That is brilliant!!

We had deck ten D balconies on both cruises. I can't remember if the AC blower turned off with no card in the slot but our cabin temperature remained constant even when we were out for the whole day without the card in the slot.

Leaving the balcony door opened seemed to turn off the AC blower but there was a time delay so it wouldn't shut off immediately if the door was simply opened and closed to go out to or back in from the balcony.

The slot controls both the lights and the airconditioning.

ANYTHING the right shape and size can substitute for your SeaPass card. Usually you can even use a business card. (they are readily available, at Guest Services and the Future Cruises desk, for example). But I always have an extra old hotel key card with me for this purpose.

If you get very desperate, you can tell them that your card was deactivated and ask for a new one. Keep the old one. :D

Why is this such a deal? Most hotels get you to put your key into a slot to get lights etc to work. Saves electricity. The USB ports will still charge if there is no key in the slot by the way.

Any key will work....use your Starbucks loyalty card!

As for the key bring outside the room. It is in a sealed envelope. You can easily see if it has been tampered with, although why someone would want to break into an empty cabin .... [emoji848] fails me unless it is an honest mistake.

Mistakes may happen about people getting into the wrong cabin ... but that already happens. There are plenty of people who go into cain areas early because they want to drop off their bags or see their stateroom. While the cabins are being prepped, they are all propped open. There have been old threads about people in the wrong cabin because they went in the open door and never tried their SeaPass.

As for concern about charging privileges ... I'm not too concerned. They know every single person onboard and have a current photo of them. There are cameras everywhere onboard. Hallways. Shops. Bars. Lounges. It would be pretty quick to determine who had the card. I'm sure if you realized your card was missing, Guest Services would have a new one for you very quickly with the old one being deactivated.

Yes, it doesn't seem that safe and would be an inconvenience if someone took a card that wasn't theirs ... you wouldn't do it on the street or in a random hotel, but the ship environment is a bit more controlled.

Great...another thing for the cabin stewards to have to do, now their "hall monitor's" too. How do they know who you are yet and what someone might be up to

Number one, remember that the cabin stewards are employees and their job should be of no concern to passengers. That's what they get paid for. Next, if someone steals it, would you not know about it? It's missing right? So I guess it's stolen. Therefore report it, and get a new one. It's not like any shops are open in port, or the casino. What exactly can they get on the ship? A drink? The card is swiped, and recorded and they review the camera to see who used it.

The risk of someone stealing your card, running down to get a drink on it, would be wildly stupid, and risk getting removed from the ship, even before it leaves. :D

Used this system at least 3 times on different ships and it works well.

Have never hear on ship or even on CC about anyones card being taken from door and used on board.

We use a store loyalty card to put in slot for lights usually an old one!

Same here, always carry an old hotel key card when we travel. Never know what hotels or cruise ships use this system. That way we have something to leave in the slot to keep the room cool.

We were on the Allure last month and it was the old check in system where they handed you the Sea Pass cards.

Have never experienced the new system with the card on the door, but I guess we will when we go on the Harmony. That is a ways away yet though.

Whether there haven't been any problems with this method yet ;)...I still think it's crazy  I want my SeaPass (s) handed to me at terminal checkin. Is this because they are using an IPad type checkin in some terminals for certain ships....still a bad idea regardless.

Sovereign of the Seas, 1988. My first cruise the room key was in cabin with door propped open... Was old motel style key, modern then, that looked like Swiss cheese holes in it.

What is the perceived advantage to this system? On other lines, we receive our cards as we check in. Very quick and efficient, and I'm just wondering what benefits the new system offers,

Hi,

I have used this system several times and each time from arriving at the terminal to getting onboard has been no longer than 15 minutes. It shaves off several minutes from each boarding transaction, when you think about the amount of passengers on these size of ships shaving minutes off the checkin process can save hours overall which in turn saves the cruise line money.

If you happen to have your seapass card taken from outside you room all you have to do is go to guest services and they will cancel the original card and issue new ones, although I have never heard of this happening.

They've always been hall monitors, though. This isn't extra.

I think we all know about this system (that's used in some hotel's too)...it's the delivery of the card that's a concern here ;)

Actually, "What???? This is a joke right?" is a direct response to "Note: you need to place your card in the power slot when you are in your room in order for the AC and lights to be activated. We brought an old card (from a grocery store loyalty program) to leave in the slot throughout the cruise."

Your picture comes up when using it and I imagine it wouldn't be good for very long if it was taken by someone else before the occupants arrived especially if used for a fraudulent charge.

Remember you are onboard a ship with plenty of security cameras so it wouldn't take them a long time to determine who had used a stolen card for an onboard charge as they have a shot of all guests on file. ;)

Exactly.

Same.

Incompetent cruisers who don't know their cabin number and don't read or look for their names on an envelope aren't something that I'm going to worry about.

What people worry about is *money*. Not if someone is in their room before they themselves enter and therefore have nothing to lose from the room.

People are OK with stewards delivering luggage in the hallway on embarkation unattended. People are OK with leaving luggage in the hallway unattended the night before disembarkation.

A card that shows a picture of your face every time it is swiped, delivered before anything is in your room --- a bridge too far.

Yeah, I don't get it.
