Children in the Diamond Lounge?

Recommended Posts

We just got off the Freedom, 8/14 sail date, and a note on the door states that children under 18 are allowed as long as they are well behaved. My wife, my 9 year old son and I went to the DL. My son is mature for his age and sat quietly while we snacked and had wine and beer. Actually, he was more "Adult" than one woman in there who was loud and was using foul language. Her friend reminded her that there was a child across from her, but she said, "Well, kids aren't allowed in here anyway,". My wife shot her a stare and said, "Yes, they are!" Her friend was embarrassed and left. We finished up our snacks and left, checlking the sign on the door and it was plainly written. So I guess she couldn't read! Although, I'm a 48 year old adult I do not want to hear another person's foul mouth either! We are ADULTS and last I checked I was not in college!

I did not notice children in the DL on Radiance this month, but there were a lot

of children in the CL during the week. Normally does not bother me, but two

mommies that would come in and take up several tables to spread out and play

cards brought their very active kids in every night. One night the children showed

up on their own to join the mommies later with robes over their bathing suits, wet hair,

and bare feet!! This was during cocktail hour. :(

Concierge just watched them with a glazed look in her eyes. Guessing she

was afraid to confront the card playing mommies about it. We left and went

back to the very crowded DL.

We just disembarked Indy yesterday, and our 14 year old was not allowed in the Diamond Lounge (he is Diamond too BTW). However, they had an "overflow area" for Diamond members cordoned off in the Olive or Twist next door. He was allowed in that area, so we were happy to sit there with him. The views were lovely, and we preferred that to the absolutely jam-packed DL anyway. There were other children in the main area of the Olive or Twist, so this workaround seemed to be acceptable to all.

However, we did notice a little girl who was much younger (maybe 8 years old?) inside the Diamond Lounge most evenings.... She seemed well behaved, so no problem really. Not sure why she was allowed, and our son was not, but I felt no need to find out. We were happy, and she and her family were happy too.

Wow happy people on vacation not looking for something to complain about. Go figure. 😏

some people like the fact that the lounge serves appetizers and canapés. can't get those in any other bar usually. other people like the smaller, more intimate venue. or the view. or the lack of limit on drinks.

That's fine then don't complain about the kids that are allowed to be there.

Always amazes me when people think "their" child is "well behaved and mature" compared to everyone else's child. Why would you even think it is a good idea to bring your child to a cocktail hour?! And I am sure these are the very same parents thinking their child is so "well behaved and mature" that no one will mind when they let them swim in the adults only pool area. Some of us cruising really enjoy having places and events on the ship that are adults only!

Drinking isn't the only thing to do in there. So no different than any other lounge on the ship.

I have never seen anything in the DL happen that I wouldn't want kids around. There are places on the ship that are adults only such as the Solarium and Night Club. The CL and DL are not adults only, and as long as kids aren't being a disturbance I have no trouble with them there.

The nice thing about the Radiance DL is the overflow area in the Vortex....this is where we opt to sit with our extended family .... all D+ including the toddler grandchild....both times on our Alaska cruise's.

Just came off the Oasis on Saturday. Children were allowed in all week during Happy Hour. Most of the time there were 5 to 10 children each night. Some played games on a table in the corner and others were seated on the chairs. Lounge was only 3/4 full each night. The only issue is when the children try and get the snacks themselves from the area/hot server where the snacks were served. The parents should have helped them. My advice, get the snacks before the children arrive. :)

Didn't get a chance to but I will before the cruise is over. There were 3 of them in one family (I didn't notice one earlier) and they took an entire couch and the room was full, with overflow into the Music Hall (as it always does, even without kids, but still it didn't help things having kids there).

Did you want the kids to stand?

The kids club is not opened during Cocktail hour, maybe if it was there would be less kids in the DL. If kids are allowed in the DL and the family is a Diamond or above why shouldn't they enjoy it just because some adults don't like to see kids in there?

We have enjoyed the Diamond Lounge with our children, we have enjoyed the overflow area with our children and we have also enjoyed the Diamond Lounge without our children. We chat to those that are friendly and engage in conversation. If some don't like our children in the Diamond Lounge the problem is with them not us.

Having said that if the Diamond Lounge states no children during Cocktail hour we respect the decision and relax somewhere else on the ship with our children.

In the CL? Never heard of that before, and if it were...they would certainly

have been much more aware of the rules in there if they were staff family.

They spent a lot of time going over their multiple pages of their set sail

pass on the last night. Then they spread out piles of cash to pay for it.

Another strange thing.

The concierge treated them as suites guests calling them by their formal

names. The kids were wearing gold colored suite cards on their lanyards.

Limited numbers of C&A members on this Radiance Alaska cruise (not unusual)

so they did not open the door for overflow into the VCL. On either leg we were

on.

A lot of these threads (and possibly upset on board) appear to me to come from Royal being a bit 'wishy washy' with there own rules.

Smoking in the casino (I believe Indy in the UK has this banned now but not on other ships). Shorts in the MDR, seems common in the Caribbean but forbidden on our recent Dubai cruise and some children can and some can't enter the DL for cocktail hour.

I was going to say make your mind up Royal!...... but what then would we talk about :p

Although I agree, kids can be annoying (like mine are sometimes), many kids, earned the right to have access by their status. So if they sit down, socialize and act appropriate, they should be allowed.

Children don't have any C&A status until they are 18 years old. I remembered when my kids were young I waited for them to go to the kids program and then I went to the lounge. Sorry, some places on the ship still should be for adults only.

We have been working our way up to Diamond status. Almost there...:D

That said, I would feel a little "let down" the first time I was able to go into the Diamond Lounge if there were kids in there. I love kids (14 grandchildren) but please let me have my "adults only" Diamond Lounge. :p

Since when? Kids who sail with their parents earn their status just like everyone else. My daughter has been on the same amount of cruises as I have and I'm sure there are plenty of kids who earned diamond status with actual sailings.

If you're talking about kids who earn their status because they start sailing with their parents after the parents have earned a specific status, the kids still get that status. Sure, they might lose it when they turn 18, but prior to turning 18, they do have their parents status. If the lounge allows kids who are diamond, then those kids should be allowed in, just like you. When they turn 18, they won't be allowed in if they don't have the sailings to keep the status, but that doesn't mean that they can't use their status as kids. Should people who marry into their status also not be allowed? That's a dumb argument if that's what you're trying to say.

Agree. There are so few areas to relax in a quiet adult themed area any longer. Even

the Solarium seems to be less and less adults only lately. (No real enforcement). I still

remember when they decided to allow children in the CL for happy hour, though Adam

Goldstein was quick to promise there were no plans to allow children in the DL during

happy hour. Things have changed.

I quite agree with you. We enjoy "quiet" time and easy adult conversation nightly in the DL and would prefer it be limited to adults only for that reason. However, if the policy has changed to allow children, I just hope that parents can be responsible enough to monitor their children and make sure they act appropriately. I know a lot of very well behaved children, who I would welcome into the DL. On the other hand, I have seen parents, who let their kids run wild, throw tantrums, etc., and tend to just ignore them. Please don't flame me, as I am just sharing my opinion. I really don't know the answer here. If a child gets "rowdy" in the DL and his/her parent is "clueless", whose responsibility is it to remedy the situation? Other DL members? Concierge? In summary, we prefer the DL to be adults only but, if children are allowed, hopefully, they will be properly supervised. Flame away if you must!;)

To me it is about as appropriate having kids in a cocktail hour setting as it would be having me hang out in the kids club and chat it up with the teenagers. Why is it so hard to understand that some venues are not kid friendly, and during the evening cocktail hour this is one of them.

My kids did not want to hang out with a bunch of adults drinking booze anyway, not that we ever let them. If your need to get into the lounge and get your swerve on means bringing your kids so they can hang out there while you drink, it seems a bit selfish to me. My kids would have been bored to tears and had about 100 other places that were kid appropriate that they would rather be.

"I want to hang out in the Diamond Lounge and watch a bunch of old people drink" SAID NO KID EVER.

No flaming here, I agree with what you said.

There are far too many generalizations going on here. Comparing a couple of 5 year olds running around to a couple of young, well behaved teenagers is like comparing the Empress to the Oasis.

We will take our teens with us into the DL (when allowed) as we enjoy the time together before dinner enjoying drinks, appetizers and talking about the fun that we had during the day. Trust me, if the kids are in high school there is nothing in your conversation that they have not heard before. Sorry if that offends anyone but we bring our kids on vacation to spend time with them and not to dump them at the kids club or let them run loose on the ship.

And what better way to teach them how to behave in that setting? I love to see kids learning how to behave in public.

I am a grandmother who has a normal 21 month old grandson who will never see the inside of the DL. He attempts to run, shriek, shred napkins, spit out food, etc. We always correct and redirect, but believe me when I say No One needs to be subjected to this during cocktail hour. Or in the MDR for that matter!

Yep, I agree with you too! Teens kind of get lost in limbo a lot of time!:( Some are too young to socialize with adults and some are too old to play with kids!;)
