Shogun Posted August 10, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 10, 2016 Hi All Hundreds of folks from Pacific Princess at Edinburgh tattoo sitting out side high on top of Edinburgh Castle watching the tattoo now, and weather man has issued a warning for non stop rain for 48 hrs, and boy is it raining, flowing like a river down the street just now. yours Shogun
satxdiver Posted August 10, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 10, 2016 I have been to the tattoo on a land trip to the UK. So sorry for the poor pax that are caught in this downpour. I hope they all get back to the CB and are none the worse for it.
hpeabody Posted August 10, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 10, 2016 Wow! I can't imagine. We had just very light drizzle (which we were prepared for) when I attended.

IDsailor Posted August 10, 2016 #6 Share Posted August 10, 2016 We watched the tattoo in a pouring rain years ago. Did not diminish the experience at all.
SteveH2508 Posted August 10, 2016 #7 Share Posted August 10, 2016 Probably isn't a bunch of laughs for the troops either - I bet a tuba full of water is a b*gger to blow.
Asa Hartz Posted August 10, 2016 #8 Share Posted August 10, 2016 The New Zealand Army Band stole the show when we attended several years ago. It was our good fortune to have a cool, dry evening, but I think we would have enjoyed the spectacle in any weather.

pediem Posted August 12, 2016 #17 Share Posted August 12, 2016 The Tattoo prides itself on never having had to cancel a performance due to weather. I've been several times, in good weather and (VERY) bad. When it's raining, the merchants along the Royal Mile make a mint selling the little plastic rain tarps. I didn't enjoy it any the less for being all wrapped up in layers and layers of raincoats, and I'm already figuring out how to get back again sometime soon. Loonbeam Posted August 13, 2016 #18 Share Posted August 13, 2016 If the crew is thinking they will have towels stacked at the gangway on arrival. The Pacific is small enough they could even do hot beverages (depending on the temp there)
AJs Grandpa Posted August 14, 2016 #19 Share Posted August 14, 2016 Four of us went. We booked the day privately and ended at the tattoo. The driving rain got us despite being bundled in multiple layers with rain gear as the outer covering. Of course we considered it a "bucket list" item, so we just endured. Other than one belligerent horse all participants acted like nothing was different Special kudos to the Pacific Princess for having the buffet and a bar open until 1:30am to help attendees recover. Colo Cruiser Posted August 14, 2016 #21 Share Posted August 14, 2016 What's the "tattoo"? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk A tattoo is a military performance of music or display of armed forces in general. The term comes from the early 17th century Dutch phrase doe den tap toe ("turn off the tap"), a signal sounded by drummers or trumpeters to instruct innkeepers near military garrisons to stop serving beer and for soldiers to return to their barracks. The tattoo was originally a form of military music, but the practice has evolved into more elaborate shows involving theatrics and musical performances. It is also used to designate military exhibitions such as the Royal International Air Tattoo. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual series of Military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and International military bands, and display teams on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. The event takes place annually throughout August as part of the wider Edinburgh Festival (a collective name for many independent festivals and events held in Edinburgh during August).
