The 2018 world cruise on the Sea Princess is now available on the Princess web site to look at and book if you have the money. :D

The cruise has an overnight stop in New York which a lot of Australians and New Zealanders are going to love.

There are places like Nanortalik and Qaqortoq in Greenland which I haven't even heard of let alone ever cruised to. They should be interesting.

There is a thread on the princess board with a link to the Cruise Critic news about it.

Ahh maybe one day. A girl has too dream. :p

I notice that there is no stop in India but instead the ship calls in at Colombo,

Sri Lanka.

I remember an E-mail or Captain Circle article asking us where would you like the World Cruise to go to for 2018.

I wonder if this was a choice by Princess or by cruisers to go to Sri Lanka and not India.

I know they have to find new ports for the people fortunate enough to go on multiple world cruisers or is it to do with the cost of a visa to India. I hope that Sri Lanka does not require an expensive visa.

It would appear that the visa, if only a stop in Colombo, is free.

Yes ..that is interesting. I agree it may have something to do with the confusion and expense of the Indian Visa. Many folk dont want the hassle of having to get one if they are not setting foot on Indian soil . It also offers the opportunity for those who want it to do a land tour of India , to leave at Colombo and rejoin the ship in Muscat or Dubai....

The longer the Sun class ships keep doing world cruises the longer we have to wait for a Grand class or better to be doing one.

Having experienced the Sun class a few times I am of the opinion that they are only suited for short voyages. Having done the Grand class a few times I am of the opinion they are far superior for longer voyages and much more comfortable.

Maybe 2019 I can only hope for one.

Actually I agree with you Brisbane41. Although I haven't sailed on the Sea Princess, i have been on Dawn and Sun and I would not like to be on an extended cruise on that class of ship. I could do something short on them but nothing over a week or two. I think the ships from other cruise lines are superior for this type of extended cruising. JMO and YMMV as I know a lot of Australian cruisers in particular love them.

I suppose the real question is what qualities do you want in a ship for a long voyage? Is it just size? Why are Sun class ships not as appropriate for a long journey?

I actually enjoy the Sun class ships, having been on 2 and about to sail on a third. Admittedly, we have not sailed for more than 2 weeks. However, size alone is not the most important consideration. Stability in rough seas is important. I may add that the more decks on a ship the higher the centre of gravity. Obviously comfort is important too. The Sun class ships are older and this may result in break-downs and other malfunctions if they are not refurbished regularly.

The larger the ship the fewer ports it can visit. Personally, I enjoy ships 75,000 & 120,000 tonnes.

The problem with the Sun class is that in comparison to equal sized ships the public rooms are far too small with much less facilities. The cabins are small with limited storage. The pools are never heated and make for a miserable experience if you enjoy swimming.

In comparison I have done world cruises on P&O ships Aurora and Oriana since 2002 and these ships are of equal dimensions to the Sun class. The theatre is much larger on the Aurora and Oriana and can accommodated many more passengers. The show lounge at the aft is much bigger on the Aurora and Oriana and can accommodate more passengers. The pools are heated on Aurora and Oriana. The Aurora and Oriana has a midship disco/nightclub for events and is again much larger and more open than the one on the Sun class. The cabins on Aurora and Oriana have much more storage space than the Sun class and the bathrooms are more practical. The bathrooms on Aurora and Oriana have shelves behind and opening mirror the Sun class does not have this meaning all your toiletries you will need for a long voyage have nowhere to be stored. In addition to this both types of ships have a wrap around promenade yet the one on Aurora and Oriana is much largert, wider and spacious than the Sun class with deck chairs and room on the deck for walking around and enjoying scenic cruising. There are also 3 swimming pools on the Aurora and Oriana opposed to the Sun class really only having 2. The Sun class also carries more passengers so go figure! The buffet restaurant is also larger on the Aurora and Oriana and both ships can accommodate more people in the buffet. Last of all Aurora and Oriana have a dedicated movie cinema that can accommodate 300 passengers. The Sun class does not have this. The Sun class does however have a large casino.

Overall in comparison to ships I have done world cruises on that were specifically designed for long cruising it is hard to even consider the Sun class as appropriate when you know there are better equipped ships out there that can handle the task more comfortably.

Agree with the reasoning. The P&O UK ships that they send this way (on their world cruises) provide IMO a much better experience than the Princess Sun class ships.

Oh and MicCanberra, I saw some rather good cruises visiting Greenland next year (have been toying with the idea...)

I will have to put it off until 2019 although maybe not if the right deal comes along.

Hurtigruten goes to Greenland with MS Fram (an Expedition ship we went to Antarctica on).

Google 'Hurtigruten Greenland' to see a video which will make you want to go sooner rather than later.

Decided not to do this cruise. Might be building new house so cruising funds will be majorly depleted. Got one little trip to USA in May 2016 and short trip home to nz to see the family and then nothing waaaa.

Ports look fabulous though. Hopefully they offer it in the future.

I take your points and would love to cruise on a P & O UK ship.

LOL, you may have missed your USA trip.

You will have a year or so to still get something and chances are they will repeat the cruise if it is popular again in 2019.

The problem also maybe that on a sun class ship, doing the world is that the freezers may not be large enough.

Not a problem as they would have containers waiting for them at more ports of call. It is more expensive , and that is another reason why the larger ships are cheaper, or more cost effective to run..

Oh it must be my black sense of humour. I thought mrs and mrs was referring to the freezers in the medical centre :o
