I am very much against smoking. However, it will not kill you to walk through a casino where people are smoking. Just do not stay there.

DON

Don, I'm with you. I'm 44, don't smoke and have never been a smoker, but give me a break, you're not going to die walking through a smoking area. And in my experience, I've found that those who are the most vehemently anti-smoking are former smokers. It wasn't an issue when they smoked, but now that they quit the universe needs to realign to their new lifestyle. I couldn't even tell you the last time I've even noticed smoke on a cruise ship and I think I have to thank the change to vaping over smoking for that.

Well let's see, both my parents died from smoking, so I guess yeah, I have real issues with smoking. I didn't care for my clothing smelling just by walking through the casino on Regal Princess. We'll wait a few years & see how many start dying from "vaping". It takes a real moron to feel there's no health issues with that. Let's see..Inhaling Nicotine infused with exotic oils, yeah nothing unhealthy about that. Ever bother checking to see "who" owns large portions of the "vape" companies? Try a little research.

I have had co-workers who could get very ill with just a whiff of cigarette smoke.

Maybe they would not die, but they would be miserable for hours and so would others who would hear them coughing for much of that time.

I'm not anti smoking. I can be next to a smoker and it won't bother me. However I am anti non-ventilation in an enclosed smoking area as I encountered on my last Carnival cruise.

Next time you're in a major airport, walk into their smoking room. I'm sure you won't die and probably won't mind smelling like an ashtray.

What airports even have smoking rooms anymore? At least in the US, I can't think of one.

Don, this really isn't true. For those with respiratory issues or allergies, just walking through is a big problem and dangerous. Also, smoke indoors wafts throughout and is present, even though you may not be able to discern it by smell. This sort of 2nd hand smoke is truly a killer.

I am also a non smoker and so is my DW. I can walk though a smoky casino and it doesn't bother me but DW has to avoid those as it really affects her. Having said that I actually would prefer if Celebrity allowed smoking if their casinos - it sure would keep DW out of them and would save us soooooo much $$$$$.

The first one I can think of is Atlanta. They're on the terminal Maps as Blue square *5. Here's one terminal map.

http://www.atl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Concourse-E.pdf They're usually between defibrillators. ;)

Smoking - There are designated smoking areas in these locations: T3 • A Center (Upper Level) • T12 • B7 • B24• C17 • C28 • E8 • E16 • E29 • Heineken Bars & Grill (concourse A food court, upper level) • Sojourner Lounge (D5).

They are still very much a thing. They exist at Dulles: http://www.flydulles.com/iad/smoking-areas

I agree that almost no people will die walking through a smoking area. But it can be pretty unpleasant. I don't really like to spend time in the casino, but I would not like it if an area I did want to spend time/do an activity in was smoking. I am OK with it for a short time, but wouldn't want to hang out in an area where people were actively smoking.

I am an ex smoker....so maybe I am more sensitive to the smell.

I'm kind of in your camp. I don't choke or have any health issues with being around smokers, but I find it unpleasant. Its actually less objectionable to me than some perfumes (there's one that was popular a few years ago that smelled like vomit to me, and I had to fight to keep from gagging). But, those perfumes don't seem to linger with me on my clothes like cigarette smoke odor does.

From a public health perspective vaping is much safer, and will incur less costs to the public overall, so I think it should be encouraged instead of discouraged, even though that's politically incorrect in the US. The Royal College of Physicians disagrees. I think it's our Puritan instincts that make us want to ban things every few years. A simple rule that restricted the scented vapor products would do a lot to make it more palatable to those of us who don't like smells and smoke.

I remember walking through the Las Vegas Airport and seeing a glass cubicle full of smoke. You could barely make out the people in there. I can imagine what it was like inside. I wonder if the Carnival Paradise would have been any more popular today now that smoking is so limited on ships. Maybe a totally smoke-free ship would be more accepted now.

We were on HAL Eurodam in February which had recently come out of dry dock and happily they were not allowing smoking in the casino. Don't think it was fleet wide but maybe they are slowing changing casino smoking also. I get a kick out of non-smoking nights in casino's on some ships...as if 10 years of built up smoke in the walls, fabrics and carpets will magically go away with a night of no smoking.

Can confirm the HAL casino. There are now bars and music venues near the Casino, so not having smoking was really nice. On my last TA there were still lots of players: so they weren't chased away by the no smoking policy.

That's like saying "I walked into Wendy's and asked for a Big Mac. I was surprised when I couldn't get one".

I'm sorry that they were disappointed, but I don't understand why they assumed two totally different cruise lines would have the same policy.

If they live in the US it could be because they have grown accustomed to a society that bans smoking in open indoor areas. For the most part you don't have to be concerned about smoke.

Yep,

HAL's new smoking policy is a joke.

A smoking area in an enclosed bar would work better for those wanting to avoid smoke.

We have not sailed on HAL since 2005 primarily because of their smoking policy. Unfortunately, we are considering a cruise on HAL with our old friends next fall. It is port intensive so there will not be that much time spent on the ship in smoking areas. The verandah door will be left cracked while we are in the room.

Interesting. I recall years ago when the bars were still smoking areas in airports, but it seems most of them don't allow it anymore. Thanks for letting me know.

Carnival also allows smoking at the Casino Bar. The bar is just adjacent the casino but not actually in the casino. Thing is, they allow smoking at one end of the bar but really, the whole bar ends up smoky.

I agree that with a little research, you can find out where the smoking areas are. The Casino Bar typically faces a major thoroughfare so its hard to avoid. Just walk fast I guess, but forget about having a drink at the Casino Bar.

personally I don't get the smoking thing but I do know I cant stand the smell of smoke or anything about it.........our bodies were not designed to inhale loads of smoke just to puff it out. Every time that stuff goes in....you can imagine.
