helen haywood Posted January 2, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 2, 2017 When did Celebrity start putting dishes in the Ocean View Cafe in those Dutch oven/cassoulet pots? This was on Eclipse in December. We sailed Equinox in April (as well as lots of other X cruises) and never saw them before. Is this to prevent waste? Or is it easier for some other reason? WestLakeGirl Posted January 2, 2017 #2 Share Posted January 2, 2017 Why does it matter when they started to do it?
helen haywood Posted January 2, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted January 2, 2017 (edited) 1) Because I'm curious. 2) Because I wondered if it was a change across the board. 3) Because I've not seen it done on Carnival, HAL, MSC, Royal, NCL or Costa. 2theship Posted January 2, 2017 #4 Share Posted January 2, 2017 Is it the little individual serving pots? I believe that they were introduced to limit waste and contamination. They were on the Summit a couple of years ago but I thought they'd gone away.
helen haywood Posted January 2, 2017 Author #5 Share Posted January 2, 2017 No, not individual pots. Pots like you'd make quarts of soup in. Eight quarts or so with glass/Pyrex tops. Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
wrk2cruise Posted January 3, 2017 #6 Share Posted January 3, 2017 First time we saw this was on Equinox in November. We also noticed a big deterioration of the selections in number and quality in the buffet as well. One day the carving station had meatloaf. No marinated mushrooms, olives. The cheese section were just a couple of platters of generic cheese slices.
lvz2cruz Posted January 3, 2017 #7 Share Posted January 3, 2017 They are the big pots you would make spaghetti in at home. They were on Reflection a few weeks ago. That is where the scrambled eggs and other things were. They don't hold as much as the metal bins and were empty way too often.
cb at sea Posted January 3, 2017 #8 Share Posted January 3, 2017 Certainly it's a cost cutting thing. They are trying to cut back on waste as much as they can...Profit margins have been shrinking...and a business can't function without PROFIT! It's the truth...it's not a sin or illegal. Businesses MUST make profit, or they fail and go OUT of business. It's just how it is.
helen haywood Posted January 3, 2017 Author #9 Share Posted January 3, 2017 I'm not arguing cost cutting. I just wondered what other ships people had seen them on. I was surprised I'd seen no mention nor pictures of them. Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app

Karynanne Posted January 3, 2017 #11 Share Posted January 3, 2017 They were used on Reflection in October. Food probably stays heated longer. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Rob the Cruiser Posted January 3, 2017 #12 Share Posted January 3, 2017 They were used on Eclipse in November/December. It looked strange, sort of like a bunch of overgrown Crock-Pots at a potluck dinner.

akowilm Posted January 3, 2017 #15 Share Posted January 3, 2017 I think I remember seeing some like this on a RCL cruise last year, and I thought it looked like covered dish supper at the local church....
KuffMUp Posted January 4, 2017 #16 Share Posted January 4, 2017 They had them on Navigator on our B2B. I would say it is to reduce waste. They did have to scamper a lot to keep them full at the islands in the Windjammer.

jg51 Posted January 4, 2017 #18 Share Posted January 4, 2017 They were being used on Radiance of the Seas in November. They kept the food nice and hot, and they were easy for chefs to manipulate when needing to be replaced. The ship also had the best-tasting pancakes and waffles we have ever eaten in a buffet in almost thirty cruises on many different ships/boats of six lines. The reason they were so good is that they were kept from going dry by constantly being covered with large pieces of cloth. Yes, it was inconvenient to have to remove the cloth for self-service, but it was worth the trouble.

theriac Posted January 4, 2017 #20 Share Posted January 4, 2017 I hope no one is Dutch ovening the pans at the buffet. That would really cause a noro outbreak! Sent from my SM-G920V using Forums mobile app

lysolqn Posted January 4, 2017 #22 Share Posted January 4, 2017 Noticed the pots sitting on ceramic heaters at the lunch buffet on Eclipse in December. Perhaps they kept the food warmer, perhaps they made serving easier but I'm being kind when I say they did absolutely nothing to enhance the appearance of whatever they contained on any given day. Just MHO.
Lady Chew Posted January 4, 2017 #23 Share Posted January 4, 2017 Hard to believe there is a thread here about such a minor issue! I think almost half of the threads here on CC are on minor issues ... doesn't make them any less entertaining! ;) And - every so often - informative!
