If NCL offered completely non-smoking cruises, would you book?

I don't know if smokers drink and gamble more than those who don't smoke.

What I know is that people who don't smoke have more money to spend on other things.

Should it be better for business to attract more nonsmokers? I don't know but maybe.

I should defenitely book a smokefree cruise but I should probably not pay more for it.

No, and no. While I don't smoke personally, I often travel with people who do. There are very few areas where you can smoke onboard to begin with, so as long as people are following the rules, I see no reason it should adversely affect non-smoking guests.

I agree !

1. YES, but making all indoor areas smoke free would be sufficient.

2. Why? Smoke free would save them $$.

What makes you say that smoke free would save them money? If NCL thought that then don't you think they would already be doing it? It is obviously NCLs thought process that allowing smoking makes them the most money. If smoking was prohibited then they would lose revenue from people who will stop cruising. And even if they banned smoking from "all" indoor areas where "all" is just the casino and the cigar lounge then they would lose money from smokers not gambling. I'm sure NCL has much stats on this topic.

If NCL thought they could make money doing this then they would have already done it. Besides the casino, it should be very easy for a non smoker to avoid it.

I am an x-smoker who hates the smell of smoke now. I don't mind it if I am passing by a smoker but I don't like being in a room filled with it anymore. That said, when we were on our last cruise on the Gem...there was NO smoking anywhere except in designated areas outside. So I am not sure I would really need a non smoking cruise. That said, I hear our new cruise on the Breakaway allows smoking in the casino. Blah! ugh!

You are incorrect here...

You can smoke in the gem casino and the reason you didn't know that on your last cruise is because the design of that ship is so good that the casino is not in the middle of things and actually has walls

1. Absolutely!!!

2. I will be happy to pay more to be on a smoke-free ship. However, I would have to be assured that the non-smoking policy would be strictly enforced. This is not currently done on ships where there is a non-smoking policy in place, and the smoking violations (people smoking on balconies) abound. It's really unfortunate. Should I have to pay more to enjoy fresh air? No. But it appears that we are now at the point where we have to pay more to have the environments we enjoy and expect. Gone are the days when people adhere to policies and rules. There are those who believe that If a policy is in place and they don't like it, then they feel they can bend it because it does not suit them. Should anyone call them on their rule-bending, then that person is "intolerant" and infringing on personal freedoms. We all have our "rights."

I'm sure what I've said will raise the ire of some (as the smoking conversation always does), but the fact remains: there are non-smoking areas and policies against smoking. There are those who chose to ignore those policies. There are staff and crew who are reluctant to enforce the policies, and people who choose to bite their tongue and hold their peace rather than risk a confrontation or unpleasant encounter with a defensive and unapologetic rule-bender and experience a spoiled vacation.

The result is absurdity: people like me willing to pay a little more for fresh air.

This is true. I just sailed the Getaway---my favorite ship so far--but because of how the casino is in the open atrium on Deck 8, the smoke floats everywhere! So allowing smoking in a casino layout like that should have been avoided. They have a couple of other areas on the ship that allow smoking--the cigar room next to the Sunset Bar, the Sunset Bar outside on the Waterfront (we avoided this area of the Waterfront), and an area in the pool area (which is not totally enclosed, so avoid this area too)

I wonder if NCL ever looked into having specific cruises be 100% non-smoking? If they did:

1. Would you book one?

2. Would you be willing to pay a premium to book a cruise that was 100% smoke-free?

It has been tried in the past and failed. Now that there are less smokers, I am sure most would love a non smoking cruise ship, but for a premium price, NO THANK YOU> there is so little exposure now to smokers, I can't see why anyone would pay a higher price for one. BTW I am an X smoker like many others. Another problem with a totally non smoking ship: Many still have families or friends that smoke, a totally non smoking ship could interfere with families cruising together.

Quite possibly but not by a passenger according to a report 3 years later.

If a ship is designated as non-smoking, that would also include the crew. When Carnival built their non-smoking ship, even the crew at the shipyard wasn't allowed to smoke. The common denominator in both fires is the cigarette. The person smoking it is irrelevant.

I'm a non-smoker but those people have rights. I would not book a cruise that was non-smoking.

You are mixing 'rights' up with other things. Do people who choose to smoke have the same civil and constitutional rights as everyone else? Of course... Like the right against unlawful search and seizure, the right against self incrimination, the right to an attorney... things like that

Are smokers a 'protected class' like the ones based on race and sex where it's illegal to discriminate based on them? No. Protected classes are based upon a person characteristics that they can't change. At least initially, the decision to smoke is a choice the person makes.

Is smoking a right people have? No, cigarettes are a substance that can be regulated and made illegal like any other substance. Saying I have a 'right' to smoke is like saying I have a 'right' to drink. Can't drink until you are 21, can't drink in public outside of private property or an area with a liquor permit, and if there's ever a big enough public outcry for it they can ban it all together (and they did, at one point). Ohio banned smoking indoors outside of private residences; which is great (issue was on the ballot and won; not just an elected officials decision). Only downside is smoking is still permitted on patios (and on restaurant patios, having a smoker light up right next to you ruins the taste of the food due to the smell).

Good point .I have experienced smoke on Celebrity which is reputed to be the leader in smoking restrictions .

Enforcement needs to be assured so that everyone understands ,if you break their policy , you will be caught.
