Muster Drill

I have never been on a back to back cruise where the second muster drill was waived. We always had to attend and we have done btb on Princess, HAL, Ponant and Hapag Lloyd.

 

We did a b2b in November on the Royal and got a letter stating that we did not have to attend the muster drill on the second leg. Also, we booked them as two separate cruises (not a 14 day) and they still let us miss the second part.

Not really. If on Royal Princess, go to the aft bar. Pretend you are staying in a room on the lido in the forward area. Drill as if there was a fire with a lot of smoke in the buffet area.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, get to your room to get your life jackets, then make your way to the muster area without going near the buffet area.

Seeing that from the Outrigger bar they's only one way to go avoiding the kitchen area- up. Where else could you possible go without using off limited areas.

And another thing is that I would never go back to my room - period. To many people waist time trying to get there for no important reason.

Interesting that both posters (floridalover5623 and MissP22) who seem to have contempt for the maritime law requiring muster drills are from Florida. It seems that in Florida laws are only suggestions and it is acceptable to ignore them to avoid being inconvenienced. DOUBLE :rolleyes:

 

 

Wow! I learned in elementary school in Florida about generalizations and how important it is to avoid them.

I believe that if you do a demographic study of attendees at a muster drill, you will find a healthy percentage of Florida residents. Fie on you!!!

I still stand by my statement. It makes no difference how many times you, or your fellow Floridians, have attended a muster drill. The law specifically states that EVERYONE must attend unless given permission to skip it. Putting yourself above the law because you have done something before is not considered appropriate behavior. Where I come from, obeying the law was taught to me as early as in elementary school. Was it not in your Florida elementary school?

 

Do you also run red traffic lights because you have already stopped for them several times before so already know what they are for and feel no need to experience them again? :rolleyes:

One of the things that will be addressed by the new Medallion system is Muster Drill. There will be no need for a crew member to physically scan your cruise card to see if you are there or not. (There actually won't be a cruise card to scan.) They will be able to tell if you are there or not and will also be able to track you down on the ship to make sure you attend the "make up" muster drill. Not having to scan cards should greatly speed things up and knowing for certain who was or wasn't present and being able to easily locate the truants should make muster faster and better for all who do as they are supposed to and attend the drill.

I questioned them when exiting the ship & they said the same thing. Your photo will still have to be verified each time- same for muster.

Good point but, of course they will scan - as you come through the door. It should be obvious if someone is holding more than one medallion. The scan is automagic and your picture should come up on their tablet.

Will they really be able to keep up with the identifications as people arrive in groups?

 

 

How well will the crew person scanning while standing on the left pick up the medallion of a person whose medallion is in his/her right pocket when the scanner is actually closer to the next person in line with a medallion on his/her left wrist.

#1. My guess is that they'll have a sensitivity control on their scanner which will narrow down the field of reception to avoid this problem.

#2. From my past 3 trips, even though they collect the information about who is in attendance, they don't track down people who are missing. Sometimes they send a letter & other times nothing.

 

The new proposed system might make it easier for them to locate where that person is but only if that person wants to be located & isn't hiding his Medallion id.

It matters greatly if the ship sinks as it's leaving port!

 

 

Agree with this, anyone remember the passenger and car ferry Herald of Free Enterprise at Zeebrugge. capsized as it left port with 193 fatalities.

 

I think the regulations whereby b2b passengers do not need to attend a second muster is simply because they attend the first which covers for the whole voyage; remember short cruises could be 2 nights and longer ones 14+ nights.

 

They always tell you to return to your cabin and get your life jacket, warm clothes a head covering and your medications. If this is not possible additional life jackets are available from the promenade deck cupboards. Obviously in a perceived real emergency one would consider carefully if you had an enormous list.

Just to point out that the Herald of Free Enterprise, as a Ro-Ro/Passenger vessel, and on which the passengers were scheduled to be onboard for less than 24 hours, did not require a muster drill.

 

And yes, it is the cruise line's decision as to whether or not passengers on B2B need to attend the subsequent musters, as the requirement is only for "newly embarked" passengers, or once monthly.

Whoa! Wait just a minute. Nowhere did I state that I do not attend every muster drill. So far as running red lights, I have driven in every state and have never gotten a traffic ticket.

I was referring to your generalization about all Floridians being scofflaws.

As I said, a large majority of the passengers at muster drills are Floridians. Where, from that, did you get the idea that neither I, nor most of the other Floridians attend?

You could use a remedial reading lesson. I suggest you carefully read through this thread again.

Yes life jackets are in all the cabins and every one takes one to the muster drill. :) Two things you should take on a cruise 1) a Credit Card so you will have a good time. 2) a Life Jacket just in case. :D :D

You take them because (on Princess) after the demonstration of how to put them on you are asked to put yours on to be sure you do know how.

Nice diversion! ;) You only say you have never gotten a ticket, not that you don't run red lights. Are you a politician of some kind? :p

On our cruise a few weeks ago at the Muster Drill a passenger got rowdy and started a fight with the crew member.

 

During the long announcement she kept talking and talking making it difficult for passengers who may have never heard the actual instructions and for others who just wanted to listen.

 

Anyway, the crew member asked her to please stop talking. He was very professional. So she started talking very loud that she has been on 50 cruises, and she does not have to pay attention nor stop talking, If fact, she really didn't want to be there.

 

So again the crew member said he was doing his job, said an apology and said he was sorry to upset her, but this is what he had to do.

 

She slammed down her life jacket, told him he was nothing but a pain in the ass, and left. I know it wouldn't happen, but I would have loved for her to be escorted off the ship. For sure if something really happened to the ship, she would be the first screaming no one was helping her.

Well she doesn't have to pay attention if she doesn't want to but others may want to hear the spiel. They'll be plenty of people to tag along with in an emergency anyway. Just follow the crowd.
