Hello folks! We are so exited to be on "Harmony of the Sees" April 1 - April 8 !!!!

Please share your experience to reply to my question:

We booked a regular stateroom with ocean view with window. From you experience is there any way we can get a free upgrade to room with the Balcony ( of course based on the availability) and what the best way or person to ask?

Thank you for your reply

No one knows how the cruise lines decide whom shall get an upgrade.

If you booked through the cruise line, you can call and ask what it would cost to do an upsell to a balcony cabin -- if there are any left. If you used an agency, then they have to call for you. Just keep in mind how much you want to pay to an upsell.

Upgrades after you board the ship are extremely rare. Most ships always sail at full occupancy. At the customer service desk there is usually a sign which says the ship is full and no cabin upgrades are available.

Sounds like you really are hoping for an upgrade. It is very unlikely. The check in personnel have no idea if any cabins are empty, so no update there. If you want an upgrade, bite the bullet and call to see the cost.

We're done over 60 cruises have received 2 visits from upgrade fairy. 1 on Royal from mini suite to Grand on Transatlantic about 20 years ago.

Second was on Princess from balcony to mini suite about 5 years ago. Mm I rhyme or reason. Now we do get called for upsells in almost every cruise. We usually book extended balcony to suite level. Ad sometimes it's a huge bargain, others not so much. Be sure of a few things though: won't lose OBC, Spa perks or they put you in a horrible location.

In 15 years and 40 cruises I have received 2 free upgrades: one to a full aft suite on Princess and once to a junior suite on Royal. The Princess came one week prior to sailing and the Royal one after we were on board. Even my very experienced cruise specialist travel agent says that no one seems to know how or when these are given. So don't count on it and be pleasantly surprised if one ever comes your way.

The "free upgrade" myth is spread by poorly researched travel articles and inexperienced travel agents. Think of it this way..What do you think the odds of you buying an economy seat on the airplane and the gate agent walking you up to First Class?

As virtually every response has indicated, it is extremely unlikely to receive a free stateroom upgrade with RCI - especially on a new ship such as Harmony. It just doesn't happen.

Up-sell upgrades resulting from price changes? That may happen. But you will pay the difference in your original booking fare to the now more attractively priced upgraded stateroom in order to take advantage of that fare.

All you can do is go to guest services after you board and ask if there are any upgrades available - which as most RCI ships sail full, will be highly unlikely. But if there is something available, be prepared to pay the difference in your paid fare and the last prevailing rate for the stateroom in question. Extremely unlikely it will be at n/c.

One of the small perks for Royals Crown & Anchor members is a little box that can be checked off on their preference list is a upgrade when available. Not much chance of non C&A being upgraded for free. happy cruising

And C & A upgrades - also rare when they happen - typically are by highest tier level first and usually don't happen below the top 2 - 3 levels. We've had one in 25 years from a JS to a GS as a free upgrade.
