Why did you have to cancel your cruise?

I originally posted this on the insurance board but there isn't much traffic over there.

I am less than 3 weeks from my sail date. My neighbor had a fire and I have significant property damage. With all of the hoops one must jump through dealing with claims adjusters, contractors and schedules it is completely up in the air as to whether I will be able to make my cruise or not.

This made me wonder what totally unexpected life events may have caused others to miss their cruise. Insurance is not a concern as there is plenty of owner's coverage, renter's coverage as well as travel insurance in place so I'm not looking for all of those "this is why you need insurance" posts. Maybe I'm selfish but I'm kind of hoping for something so ridiculous and unforeseen that i don't mind so much that my house is in a shambles.

So, what crazy, unpredictable thing happened to cause you to miss (or come close to missing) your cruise?

I am still pissed about the cruise I had to cancel about 3 years ago. I was having knee surgery and made sure I planned the surgery enough in advance to be cleared by the doctor for the cruise. It was a family gals cruise with daughter, grand daughters, and great granddaughter. We were in the haven. Well, my jerk of a cardiologist would not clear me for surgery until I had a angiogram and he didn't let my know until the day before the surgery was scheduled.By the time I could have the procedure and the surgery it was too close to the sailing date. Of course there was nothing wrong with my heart. The same guy had done similar things to 3 of our friends.

I booked our first European cruise next October to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We might not have to cancel, but if the Vols are playing Alabama at home that weekend, we'll have to postpone the cruise.

That's why we don't cruise (or do other vacations) in the fall :)

6 months before a cruise my wife had a pulmonary embolism. She recovered fine but had to go on blood thinning medicine that had to be monitored. She was advised by her physician not to leave the country, so we had to cancel our cruise and the travel insurance covered us.

My husband was assaulted , knockedout and perp broke his nose .He had PTSD as a result ...I had to cancel my cruise to be home for him .It was not a fun time

Now that's something you aren't likely to anticipate. How far ahead of your cruise did the assault happen?

Two days before we were to fly out for our cruise, I was told I had to have emergency surgery. :o It was to be our boys first time in the Southern Caribbean, sailing from Puerto Rico for Spring Break. I was beside myself and so disappointed! We were insured, but it honestly had no ability to take away my disenchantment.

The airline just required us to use the flights within a year of original booking, so last minute plans to go somewhere were made. We ended up using the flights to Billings MT and we went to Yellowstone. We were nomads, renting a suburban and staying at a different place around the park almost every night. It turned out to be a wonderful trip, just over a week and we used our refund from the insurance to book an Alaskan cruise as soon as the dates were released for our family of 4 and my parents. 2 years later, we were able to take the boys to San Juan and had a wonderful time.

I always believe things happen the way they are supposed to, and I don't know if I would have put Yellowstone on our travel map without that cancelled trip. It was so fantastic and a wonderful journey! Additionally, Alaska was some sort of wonder and simply amazing (and was at least 2x the cost of the Caribbean:eek:) but with the offset of the trip insurance refund, it made it seem like a lot less! You never know where this cancellation may lead you!!

We canceled a booked cruise before final payment due to my x-husband being close to death. I needed to be there for my son. Only thing we lost was the small down payment and the cost of the trip insurance. At this point we are one month away from our final payment day and now my husband's mother is close to death. She probably will pass before our cruise but you never know and it's not something we want to anticipate at this point. Everyone is telling us not to cancel our cruise again but it's very hard emotionally to make a decision like this one.

😂😂😂 I vacation in the fall to get OUT of Knoxville on game days. My days in the Pride of the Southland cured me from ever needing to actually go to another football game as long as I live 😂

I didn't have to cancel, but a couple hours before my flight my parrot flew out the door while I was taking out the trash. (I think the packing and cleaning for the housesitter stressed him out.) Didn't get him back until the next day, so flew to the first port (Victoria instead of Vancouver.) Didn't have insurance, but doubt it would have been covered. Airline treated me very nicely from what I recall.

We've stood at family hospital beds the night before a cruise, including it being our honeymoon one and resigned ourselves to 'there's nothing we can do but cancel' . the hospitals and family insisted we go and we took some convincing. Massive phone bills calling a few times a day, not sleeping and guilt wasn't worth it. We'd have been better cancelling. The hospital was right and the family member recovered well but we didn't relax well.

We will probably cancel the second cruise we have arranged. There is only 10 weeks between them and my wife has knee replacement surgery needed urgently. The operation is likely after 3 weeks following our return from the first one. 7 weeks is only just time for rehab and she wouldn't really want to cruise just in case rehab is slower than usual.

10 years ago, i had cruise booked with boyfriend and 10 year old daughter. 3 weeks before the trip. Boyfriend had massive heart attack and had triple bipass surgery. He kept wanting us to go without him.

We would have given up to cruise no problem. Once we knew he was out of danger, then we went back and forth 'go ....... no go,.

With less then 1 week, we all the all clear from his doctor and the medical insurance. We went the 3 of us.

My mother-in-law passed away unexpectedly just shortly before our cruise. Oddly enough, I think that was the very first time I had ever purchased travel insurance. Have bought it every single time since then.

My mom and I were booked on the Escape for 2 weeks last Jan/Feb in the Haven when 4 weeks before she suddenly experienced congestive heart failure. She had a very rocky 6 months until we transferred care to the fabulous heart failure medical specialists at UPenn and following a mitraclip (mitral valve)procedure, we are scheduled to Escape for 1 week in December (low sodium diet planned). Had travel insurance and thankfully still have my mom, so losing the incredible CAS deal and upgrade for week 2 didn't even hit the radar with everything else I was juggling.

My mom now has a bit of superstition about cruises when we receive great upgrades as in addition to this year, way back in 1999, we were scheduled to sail out of London on the Norwegian Dream one week after it collided with a freighter - needless to say, cruise cancelled. NCL took great care of ensuring no loss to passengers and offered 50% off next cruise. We booked the same cruise the following year and NCL upgraded us to a suite. Arrived in London a few days early - spent day 1 at dentist as I broke a tooth on the plane biting into a nut shell in my salad. The next morning, mom fell and broke her shoulder when rushing out of the hotel shower when the water got scalding hot. Cruise canceled. Had travelers insurance or so I thought -I paid the fee to the local travel agency which never purchased the insurance. The agency went out of business shortly thereafter and I never recouped the money but to this day I haven't told mom -- so if you meet us on a cruise -- it's a secret!

To those who have to cancel for whatever the reason, may your days become happy again and may you continue to experience wonderful cruises
