AnyShip4Me Posted September 8, 2017 #101 Share Posted September 8, 2017 So maybe I am reading to much into this comment....but pretty sure global warming isn't just an Americans creation or issue. Pretty sure hurricanes and cyclones are not a new thing and have been a thing long before global warming....but don't let that interrupt a chance for a good rant and to take a swipe at (all) Americans. Regardless Cat 5 with 175 mile per hour winds will inflict devastation on whoever's path Irma crosses. Hope she weakens and manages to avoid some of the bigger population Amen, Thank You for your post!

aeneas3 Posted September 8, 2017 #105 Share Posted September 8, 2017 news today said that the port area and airport are heavily damaged and they are working on fixing the airport to get people out. Has anyone seen anything to confirm this? So afraid for the friends we have made during our travels to the wonderful island and its neighbors. Rare hcat Posted September 9, 2017 #110 Share Posted September 9, 2017 After reading the article...proud that US gov is coming to aid of citizens who are stranded , Sorry to say that I do not believe this would be a very safe or comfortable port to visit in the near term. Systems, services and security need to be restored. Also pleased to hear the cruise lines are also effecting evacs from devasted islands,,..they have really stepped up to the call. BOLTFISH Posted September 10, 2017 #111 Share Posted September 10, 2017 Looks like this. You can still see the roof, but it appears the storm surge swept through. No idea if anything is salvageable. Where did all the rocks come from on Maho? That is a 100% sand beach if I recall? Did they get brought up from deeper water during the surge? Vacationdreamer<>< Posted September 11, 2017 #123 Share Posted September 11, 2017 Forgive me if already posted, this is the first photo from CNN,I have seen of Orient Beach. Every time I see a new image from SXM or Barbuda I wonder why folks are chiding FL for being so strong-minded in their planning. I've seen folks on other message boards bellowing "fear-mongerers!" and yet this is the same system. I'm awaiting aerial images of Key West and Naples. I'm prayerful they do not look like this. Did they get brought up from deeper water during the surge? Maho was always a (mostly) man-made beach. If you search back through the CC archives, you'll see pictures of the rocks after a storm took all the sand away. I'm sure it can be restored again, but of course there are other priorities to be taken care of before that is tackled.
