teachingforme Posted December 22, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 22, 2017 I was looking at our cruise for June 2018. Princess has removed Dominican Republic-Amber Cove port from the itinerary. We were looking forward to visiting this port. They put a sea day in its place. Do you think there is a liking hood Princess will add it back in? Or does anyone know why Princess is no longer calling on Amber Cove Dominican Republic?

Our March cruise on the Caribbean Princess had Amber Cove removed from the original itinerary to compensate for this ships ongoing propulsion issues, which causes the ship to reduce its maximum speed. However, we were informed of this change by Princess.

teachingforme Posted December 22, 2017 Author #5 Share Posted December 22, 2017 We are on the Caribbean Princess. The notice we received from Princess about a week ago was that Ocean Medallion would not be available. We now have 2 sea days at the end of the cruise. AF-1 Posted December 22, 2017 #6 Share Posted December 22, 2017 When will the Ocean Medallion be available or is it still a work in progress? I don't sail until Feb 2019
fishin' musician Posted December 22, 2017 #7 Share Posted December 22, 2017 Seeing as this port represents a huge investment by and for CCL, it would likely take a major local incident to remove it from CCL itineraries. After visiting once I'm not sure a sea day is a bad alternative.
satxdiver Posted December 22, 2017 #8 Share Posted December 22, 2017 I just checked and the DR is still on our itinerary on the CB in November 2018. We have been there once already. The new port is really nice.

I don't sail until Feb 2019 Hope it does in 2019 on the CB. 1 more year may be enough for the further test. Mingus Posted December 22, 2017 #12 Share Posted December 22, 2017 We really enjoyed Amber Cove last week. A lot of passengers didn't realize or aware that the loungers, pool, hammocks & water slides were free. They might not have even known the pool was there, since it's out of sight from the many shops. The pool area was deserted. Look for the loungers in the water......aaahh  Here's a secret (thanks to a previous poster).....at the end of the zipline, there's a crew store that sells beer, pop, snacks, toiletries, etc at a discounted price. There's a decent beach next to Amber Cove, that you could almost throw a rock to, but it's fenced off and patroled. However, it's an easy 15 to 20 min. walk outside of Amber Cove to reach the beach. Someone will offer to help you with loungers, but they're free to use. There are a few shops, bar and restroom (free!!) at the beach.

Very nice and big pool but kind of difficult to get shaded lounge. We got there early and hard to get access to wifi unless you purchase an alcoholic drink. Not something we really wanted to do at 8 am. There was a pharmacy nearby with a mob of people standing outside so they must offer free wifi. mrpayroll Posted December 23, 2017 #20 Share Posted December 23, 2017 how much did the buffet cost?[/quote There is no buffet. Previous poster is getting Amber Cove confused with somewhere else. There is a restaurant at the pool to purchase food.

sunsetbeachgal Posted December 23, 2017 #22 Share Posted December 23, 2017 Agree I think that poster is confusing Princess Cay with Amber Cove. Food and drink are available to purchase at Amber Cove pool area. No free buffet. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Port area is the standard cruiser trap and then it quickly goes to poverty island. The people on the dune buggy excursion looked like they had fun. I can't remember what we did but it involved some locals dancing and lunch after visiting a farm I think. Next time we would probably do the port and head back to relax on the ship. Most of the excursions, in every port, have turned into money grabs.
