Marina now

We had the same restrictions for over a week after boarding the Marina in Callao a couple of years ago and then again on the Insignia last year after a few passengers became ill after the overland trip to the Taj. Oceania takes GI symptoms seriously and does not want to spoil their passengers cruises with rampant spread of GI disorders. It is an inconvenience, but it is for our safety. We have seen many people leave the restrooms without washing their hands and going directly to the dining rooms. We have also seen impatient cruisers reaching under the glass to get the tongs to serve themselves in the Terrace or even grab thing with their bare hands. I wash my hands religiously and am mindful of disease spreading mediums such as stair rails, elevator buttons, etc. We have never (Knock on wood) gotten sick aboard our many cruises. Oceania precautions serve to remind us how easily one can get sick on the cruise and the various means of spreading viruses and bacteria.

I view the hand sanitizer, irregardless of it's effectiveness, as a constant reminder to practice safe hygiene. The gloves are a great idea from the 19th century when people of means did not wash their hands on a regular basis. It was not a fashion statement but a meaningful means of survival.

The last ship we were on, a new build, had a public restroom set-up where it was difficult to get out of the door again without washing your hands, then using sanitizer AND the door opened on its own.

 

The pool food bar where people tend to eat finger food had a sink with soap at the relatively narrow entrance/exit. If you have to almost squeeze by a sink that you cannot overlook, chances are you will use it.

I'm hoping conditions have improved by Saturday when we are due to board the Marina. We always bring hand sanitizer and I will also be bringing clorox wipes to clean the cabin.

Pretty sad if that's what it takes for people to practice safe hygiene. Don't care how they eat it, just how it is served to them.

Have not seen this yet.Everyone getting fed and all restaurants open.Terrace restaurant has someone on duty to check people use sanitiser,but we haven’t noticed the others.

There are a lot of ‘coughers’ on board too.Saw a lady today cough up into her serviette on the Terrace and then lay the serviette flat on the table.Server will inevitably pick it up and then handle something like teapots.

All milk jugs and placemats removes from Terrace.

Passengers seem to be overall very patient and the staff work very hard.

Casino still open and so is sports deck with golf clubs and tennis rackets! Still no Trivia..

Have not heard of any new cases today but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any.

Outside of ancient demographics, and the multiple challenges that can bring on long cruises, can one image these conditions coming to bear on a paid 25+ day extended voyage?

 

How about half of a RTW Cruise to get rid of the problems? Does that have your attention? Port officials won’t allow your sick ship to dock! You paid how much for that RTW?

Yikes, we board on Feb 3rd. Now here's the dilemma, do I tell the 3 other couples we convinced to go on this cruise with us about the situation? Obviously, I will. However I will wait a couple more days to see if thing get better.....

We are presently on board and there are inconveniences, but they are doing the best they can. A team is being sent from Miami to Tahiti super lean everything on the ship before the next cruise. Don’t be surprised if you don’t board until later in the day you plan to.

On board now, very little info rumour and speculation is rife, it would be far better if Oceania would be honest. The illness as known about before Easter island, plus someone was ill immediately on board from Callao and did not leave their cabin for 3 days, I doubt they notified staff. Apparently a code red had already been anticipated on this cruise, likely after callao.!!!!

Of course, this is always the case.

People want to talk about “sick ships” but it’s the people who are sick. They board the ship sick - knowingly or unsuspecting - and then proceed to infect others. In a closed environment like a ship the illness spreads literally like a wild fire.

Problem on ship is they do not tell you very much. Sometimes the rumors are worse than what the truth is. Better to know what the real condition is.

Sadly, Oceania seems to have a corporate culture of secrecy and communicates with passengers poorly when issues such as norovirus precautions or bad weather/missed ports situations arise. Sort of like American Airlines posting an on time departure to occur in 5 minutes when there isn't even a plane at the gate. This way of operating certainly is a losing strategy overall, but especially with the experienced cruisers/sophisticated consumer types that is Oceania's prime market. It is unfortunate.

appalling mismanagement of illness on board Marina, they have not told us what the illness is, we have found that la reserve has been cancelled for this evening, but only when we asked, they did not even have the courtesy to inform us; laundry is closed, but somehow the casino and theatre are open, I get the impression that it the ship was on fire, the people in the casino would be the last to leave; in addition the hot tubs are still in use, breedings grounds for bacteria at the best of times, particularly worrying as someone who was supposed to be in quarantined was found in the pool!

Yes, and by law they do not have to. Too bad that they do not do what is right, only what they need to do or would be in violation of the U.S. laws. One day it will come back to bite them in the a... And it will serve them right.

I can’t imagine a smart person using a hot tub on a cruise ship under the best of conditions, much less under these.

Believe me, plenty are using them, but I do not see safety rules posts around them (although I don't get too close) the spa is also still open, looks like anything that makes more money is fine to keep running!

We were on Marina a few years ago when the cruises before and after ours had Noro. The ship was disinfected before we boarded. We were originally booked on the cruise after the one we took where there was a high incidence of Noro. We were lucky to have missed it but so many things affected our cruise - well done meat, no self service, and the walls were washed down to where the ship smelled like a hospital.

 

I am sorry for those of you onboard who are missing out and contending with the situation.
