mariners lunch

Nothing really IMO. Once only Mariners could eat lunch in the MDR on embarkation day, but now it's open to everyone, including first-timers, and is pretty much just like MDR lunch on any day it's open. The Brunch later on is by invitation, and is a little fancier than a regular lunch ... you get free wine! Usually the Captain and the Cruise Director will have a few words to say along the lines of "glad you're here, please come back". Sometimes pax who have achieved a new Star level or Medallion level will be recognized. It varies by ship and Captain. This is where you usually get your souvenir tegel.

What is special on the "Mariners welcome on board lunch"?

And the "Mariner society brunch"?

Just curious!

Neither is really that special. The welcome lunch is a small menu with limited choices and the Mariner Brunch is just an opportunity for all Mariners to dine together and be welcomed by the CD and Captain. Usually held after the Mariners Award session. Again a small menu with limited choices. You receive your Deft Tile at this brunch if you attend.

You probably will hear the many don't enjoy the lunch, but we do. We are 4 star mariners and have gone to every "Mariner lunch" on the cruises we been on. Those receiving there next pins are recognized. We are also working towards our 300 cruise day medallion, but it probably won't happen, not enough time left for us, but we plan to enjoy trying.

Not always. We've sometimes had a choice of white or red still wine, or bubbly.

True but champagne is the norm at everyone we’ve attended. Can get wine, etc. at the Mariners Reception prior.

Oddly, the "Star Mariner" perks on HAL's website (yes, the new one) say "Mariner Embarkation Lunch." I suspect that's leftover copy, and the embarkation lunch is open to all. We always go. It's a nice quiet way to start the cruise.

There may be two receptions, depending on the ship. Sometimes there is a welcome reception on embarkation day, usually in the crows nest. And then there is the medal reception, which is just prior to the Mariners Brunch.

Yes I am well aware of that, merely saying that wine, etc. is available at the Award Reception and generally champagne is poured at the luncheon.

Invitees to the reception are escorted to the luncheon upon completion, I’m certain you are aware of that.

We prefer to have lunch in the dining room on embarkation mainly because it is quieter and easier for me since I use a Rollator.

When we used to go to the Mariner Brunch -- sparkling wine was served -- no choice of red or white wine. And the menu was more limited than the one on embarkation day.

We do go to the Mariner's Award ceremonies -- lately we had only a choice of red or white house wine. There was a time when we could ask for a cocktail of our choice.

Yes As Platinum Medallion Mariners, we were always escorted to our the table where we were seated.

Well with all due respect, while I realize I don't have a platinum medallion, my experience has been we were "told to go this way" and while tables were certainly reserved for us, there was no "escort" and we ended up in the same lineup as the other mariners most times.

We were "escorted" a couple of times but it's certainly not the standard nor required IMO.

Last time, we went to the Medallion ceremonies and skipped the luncheon ;)

What is nice about the Mariners Lunch is usually you meet those who are happy sailing on HAL ships. Not always, but it makes a very nice common denominator and you can learn about other's favorite HAL cruises.

The welcome receptions are my favorite. Everybody is so excited for the sailaway and the receptions feel very festive. Makes me smile just thinking about it. (I hope they have one for our upcoming Asia journey. :) )

That's our modus operandi also. ;) We always book a Pinnacle lunch on that day.

It backfired only once ... as we were coming out of the Queen's Lounge, we turned to the left instead of turning right to go to the MDR. Some MDR attendant came running after us asking us where we were going as we were supposed to be sitting at the Hotel Director's table. We had never been informed before the ceremony.

We were invited to our first Mariners lunch this past March. We recd. our first tiles and thought that was a very nice souvenir. The luncheon started with a sparkling wine and choice of entrees. We did think the entrees were odd selections and the desert was tapioca which seemed odd. We had a very nice time talking with other mariners.

We got our 100 day medallions on K'dam this winter. I'm not sure it counts as"escorted," but everyone walked to the MDR as a group. I wasn't aware of any reserved tables, but maybe that's only for people with bigger numbers. We just found our way to an available table and sat down. (And never got our tiles) The ceremony was in the showroom, and they invited other mariners who already had medals. At each day level they asked people at that level to raise their hands or stand up to be recognized. It was nicely done. When they got to the big-number people, one couple had about a bazillion days on HAL. And the captain recognized the mother of one of them, who was on her very first HAL cruise, isn't that nice?!! Well, maybe, but I thought gee, they've done all those cruises and never took Mom along until now????
