Rare Hlitner Posted May 31, 2018 #51 Share Posted May 31, 2018 I don't understand why the "suits" haven't figured out that 5 pictures sold at $5 each brings in more money than zero sold at $35 and the expense of supplies/labor used to produce the overpriced photos. Can the paper be "washed" and reused? I think I heard that rumor a long time ago. What makes you think many of us would pay $5 for much that is sold by PW :). EastBay Cruisers Posted May 31, 2018 #52 Share Posted May 31, 2018 (edited) We used to see large sales of that Black Velvet stuff at a nearby corner gas station. They would simply park a U-Haul Truck and sell the "art" out of the truck. A lot of stuff looked similar to what we have seen in the on board Park West gallleries :). Hank LOL ! The next time I'm on a Princess ship that calls at Ensenada, I'll buy a lovely assortment of bullfighter paintings in day-glo colors on black velvet as a free gift for everyone here at CC who wants one. Never mind the Princess art gallery and its usual ( trite) display of oil-painted sad-faced clowns, ballerinas, olives and pimentos with faces, the streets of Paris at night after a rainstorm, or thatched-roof cottages with lanterns in the windows...... You can have a chartreuse bullfighter in the same shade as those safety vests that highway workers wear, you can have a vibrant orange bullfighter, even a bubble-gum pink and aqua bullfighter on black velvet to match a Barbie doll collection ! Just as fabulous as anything selling for $5,000 in the PWA gallery -- and at about a 98% discount. Put your orders in now, and avoid the art auction on board..... ;p Edited May 31, 2018 by EastBay Cruisers

Probably because they sell enough at $35 to make more $$$ than they would selling them at $5. There is a gas station in Orlando on the way to the airport that charges about $3/gallon more than every other in the area station. They find enough customers at that price that they do not have to sell many gallons to make a nice profit. They get away with it because they are the last station on that route to the airport and people trying to catch a plane are not willing to turn around and head away from the airport to find a gas station with reasonable prices. drsel Posted June 1, 2018 #57 Share Posted June 1, 2018 I think there was once an offer of 100 photos for $100, but not on Princess. Also, if its your wedding anniversary, Carnival gives you a $10 discount coupon, which you can use to buy a $12.50 photo for just $2.50, all inclusive. SquishTheWhale Posted June 1, 2018 #58 Share Posted June 1, 2018 I walked by one of these just when they were congratulating a bidder on his $28,000 purchase. After a big round of applause, the auctioneer then said they were going to give the winner a free bottle of the "Champagne" they were serving. More applause. When I hear things like this I just worry some old dear is being robbed of her life savings after being convinced its an 'investment' for her grandchildrens future. DrivesLikeMario Posted June 1, 2018 #59 Share Posted June 1, 2018 Dying laughing reading this thread. I certainly wouldn't miss the art auctions. You'd think Princess could put a much better money-generating venue on their ships instead.

floridalover5623 Posted June 10, 2018 #64 Share Posted June 10, 2018 Does anyone really care as long as the suckers line up to spend their money & subsidize the cost of running the ship? LOL :D
1980dory Posted June 10, 2018 #65 Share Posted June 10, 2018 I hate getting those ads in my mail box. Piles of them end up in the cabin stewards garbage. I feel sorry for them having to dump the wastebasket filled with all those pieces of paper trying to get money out of you. The spa, jewelry, art auction, your feet, sick of Effy ads, on and on. Waste of paper and ink. Agree! Time to start getting environmentally friendly.
Micahs Grandad Posted June 10, 2018 #66 Share Posted June 10, 2018 They aren’t worth much more than the piece of paper they are printed on. Sent from my iPhone while I probably should be working. Actually thought the free art was worth just about what you paid for them.

Baron Barracuda Posted June 10, 2018 #71 Share Posted June 10, 2018 dd & hubby returned yesterday from Alaska sailing on Star Princess. On sea day they wandered into art auction, not looking to buy, just free champagne. She still filled out raffle ticket for "free art" and amazingly won. After auction she went to claim her prize and was told there would be a $350 charge to have her piece framed and shipped home. She said no thanks, I'll frame it myself. OK they responded, then it's just $100 for the shipping. She again said no thanks, I'll carry it home. No can do they replied, can't carry off, must be shipped. Piece is still on the ship. Free art..... not!

Free art..... not!The so called "free" art they give is a medium size painting of 2 empty chairs on a beach facing the sunset. It's there on many different cruise ships all over the world at the same time !. Now you go figure. They usually charge an upfront payment of $35-60 as compulsory shipping charges, depending on your home country. They refuse to hand over the piece on the ship, saying that it is required for display for all the upcoming cruises. They say that the "free art" will be later shipped to your home from their head office in US. But first you need to pay the shipping charges.
