What is there to do at night for families with kids?

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this a a stupid question, but what is there to do at night with kids, ages from 7 to 12 if they don't go to kids clubs? Sounds like everything is pretty adult oriented. Shows are adult, comedy clubs are adult, bars are adult, casino adult. So, what do families do on say the Mariner, or the Oasis? I would like to book a cruise, but really concerned about what we would actually do every night after dinner? We have been on a Disney cruise, and of course there is a ton to do with families, but we are priced out now with them. If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate any tips or ideas you have for things to do after dinner!

TIA!

Not all shows are "adult"...anything early in the evening is g or pg rated...only the "late night" shows are "adult". Oasis has more than Mariner simply because it's a larger ship.

And bars are not adult...anyone may go to the bars!

Many of the shows are not adult. Aqua theater diving and water shows are great; ice shows are also great family entertainment. Some of the theater shows are magicians, illusion acts, ventriloquists, singers and dancers.

If you don’t want to go to shows you can still swim, go to the sports court and play soccer, basketball. Etc. don’t forget table tennis, shuffleboard. Mini golf, rock climbing - daytime activities are for the most part still available.

Plenty to do!

Having been on both Disney and Oasis class ships with that age range, I will say that I think RCCL Oasis class (and Anthem) have more to do for families as a whole. The kids clubs, IMO, are better on Disney, but there is much more to do on the RCCL ship. First of all, the number and size of pools, especially on Oasis class as compared to Disney is incredible. And it's great to go swimming after dinner with the kids under the stars. They play movies in the Aquatheater and I think they are always either PG or PG13. It is right next to shuffle board, carousel if some of the kids dont want to stay. Hot tubs are generally open late as well and the shows before 10pm, while not catering to kids, are all family friendly.

We actually prefer RCCL to Disney at this point because of the ship offerings.

Other then the comedy show, I would say that all shows on RCI are family friendly. The ice skating and aquatic shows on the bigger ships are outstanding, as are the Broadway shows. The production shows on the smaller ships are basically singing and dancing to Broadway and movie tunes - nothing adult at all. I would suggest you take your kids and sit near the back in case you need to leave early. Nothing wrong with exposing children to entertainment they haven't seem before.

We took our kids to all of the shows on Allure aside from the comedy club. Funny enough, the headliner was a singing group with songs from the 60s and my younger one (6 at the time) liked that show more than I did. One night there was an outdoor movie playing at the Aqua theatre (I forget the name offhand but it was a kids/family one). I think one night we didnt have a show and we just took our time with dinner and wandered on the promenade and around the ship (always dreamworks characters and stuff going on).

This summer we're going on Mariner. We plan on each evening being dinner followed by a show. Will need to check the compass to see if anything else is going on as well.

the only 'adult' show is typically ONE comedy show over the course of the week and it is very well advertised as such. in fact a few comics have been known to stop their show until children are removed.. the bars/lounges are not adult only.. except again, one will go 18 and up only at 10 pm. there is always something to do on board, with the newer ships having more.

My kids are in that age range. They LOVE cruising.

Some nights after dinner we went to the movies. Some nights we played miniature golf. Some nights we went dancing (there is live music in various lounges around the ship, plus at least one family-friendly deck party). Some nights one or more of them went to the kids' club. We usually spent at least 30-60 minutes reviewing the cruise compass for the next day to decide what we wanted to do. We also usually bring a few card games. At the very least, we can sit on deck or in a lounge and play games together. Some nights they crashed early because they were worn out from the day.

Obviously, some nights we did multiple of the above. My kids were never bored.

My kids are 16 and 20 and they've been cruising since the youngest was 3. They've always attended and enjoyed the shows. The early shows are always family friendly. The adult shows are usually 10:30 or later.

I guess I am a fuddy-duddy, but I personally would not take kids that age to the Broadway type shows. They usually have adult themes. I know that for Grease it did say in the Cruise Compass that it was adult themed.

On the Oasis class there is the Boardwalk with the carousel and the little play area for the kids.

The Aqua show and ice shows have always been fun for our son. They do have the ventriloquist or such for the early shows.

Believe it or not, on the Oasis class ships after dinner and maybe a show, my son loves it when we just walk around the jogging track at night. We like to see what we can see. Sometimes it’s other cruise ships lit up and sailing along. We have seen fireworks and we have seen lightning off in the distance. Maybe we’re weird, but we have all enjoyed that.
