Exactly, people are up in arms with the medallion, yet probably 30 Apps are tracking them on their smart phone including on the ship, which they have no issue with.

Mike,

I think this is the note you are referring to.

p26 in the paper atlas, and p19 in the pdf.

This is completely consistent with several first hand reports.

Here is the link, so anyone who cares to can verify it.

https://www.princess.com/downloads/pdf/hk_brochures/2018/Cruise-Atlas-2018-2019-English.pdf

No this is not it; the page is # 26 in the

Newest version and is titled ocean medallion vacations; your p19 is entitled introducing ocean med. It comes through on my device in tiny print even when I expand. I believe they reused one of the pic in the new version; different

In regard to tracking me personally I don’t care. I leave my cell in the safe and if I reading or getting emails I take iPad. I was speaking generally and not about myself. I don’t care

I checked the Princess web site about Captains circle perks and it says for those platinum and above an Atlas will automatically be mailed annually. It does not say anything about others. I imagine they will mail it on request. Later. It only speaks of Ocean Medallion on p. 26 and then to say it is not necessary to have.....nothing is said about having to carry card or Medallion everywhere on the ship. Although I imagine if you wish to use casino or buy anything or get back in your cabin you must carry one or the other. ***** is very much downplayed in my opinion and subtle description changes made. As far as I can tell due to fine print and old eyes it is not what is referred to above. Mike

The only reason we strayed from the point of the thread to Cruise Atlas was some using previous “Atlas” and its description of *****. This new one seems to me to have substantial but subtle differences. EG Is there a mandate that the ***** or cruise card be carried at all times? Etc. Mike

Personally, I never leave my cabin without my card as I like to be able to get back into the cabin. I'm thinking that those folks who will insist on a card can still be "tracked" as it's now an RFID card. The ship's sensors will be able to read it just as they read the medallion.

My wife gets notices on her phone when we go places asking if she wants to "check in" and such on Facebook. Soooooooooo many people have FB accounts (I don't) and don't seem to worry about being tracked but many of those same people are freaked out by being "tracked" on a ship. I don't get the reason to worry. I'm guessing the same sort of thing happened when hotels, ships, etc. went from a physical metal key to a key card system.

Not all RFID chips are the same. The Medallion's operational range is reported to be 100' (30m);

I suspect the cruise card's is the near-field type: 2½" (5cm).

As I said upthread, Princess has softened the language in the Ocean FAQ and may be bowing

to passenger resistance. Which is a shame since the only differences between the Medallion

and what the existing cameras plus decades-old facial recognition software can do is that there

is no "don't bother me with marketing" option on facial recognition, and it can't save your life.

Actually they do not, they will no longer let you toss cash on the table, all cash must be changed to chips and cruise card is requested regardless of being charged or using cash.

On a cruise, I put my phone in the safe. I don't carry it around the ship.

I realize that the cruise card already uses RFID or near field technology and will leave an electronic trail of our whereabouts.

What I disagree with ( and others may feel the same way) is that whenever we pass by one of 1100+ video monitors in the corridor, bar, casino, theatre entrance, etc., is that the screen will light up with our photo and name for everyone to see.

For example, in the bar, the monitor on the wall with show everyone's name and photo, the location of the table, what they are drinking, and the time they ordered it ( so that the servers know when to come over and ask if the guest wants to order a refill).

Same thing in the onboard shops. The video screens will show the photo and name of each guest currently in the shop, the amount of time they have been there, and list the previous items they have purchased.

My issue is that the information of name, cabin number, and photo, is publicly displayed, so that everyone can see it. ( To the techies who reply, "Well, who cares if others see your name, cabin number, and your photo?", I reply that I would like to have some privacy, even though, yes I understand that the cruise card RFID can also track me. But, it doesn't cause the video screens installed every 5 feet to light up with my name and photo).

Haboob says that the medallion has a setting called "safety only", and the guest can set the medallion so that the video screens all over the ship will not light up and flash your name, photo, list of purchases, time of last visit to that amenity, amount of products purchased, receptivity to advertising, amount of advertising already mailed, and so forth.

So, that is fine if the medallion has a "safety only" setting. -- EBC

While we have never used the phone, we have used the calendar function for almost every cruise. Carrying the patter and losing track of time equals missed activities. Using the calendar function, now the app, gives you a buzz or vibration of a show, talk or a meet for a drink. We learned to get into "cruise mode" before we get on board, but being that laid back lead to missed opportunities.

Can you give us a link to where Princess or a passenger with an ***** has said this is what happens?

I believe EastBay has conflated the hallway screens and the point-of-sale terminals and tablets

(no, I don't know for sure that the drink runners have tablets, but if they are going to be serving

at the pools and Princess Theater I don't see how else Princess could intend to support such).

If you can stomach the sappy marketeering, there is a YouTube explaining the wall screens

and the Tagalongs (your chosen sea horse, butterfly fish, or turtle cartoon) that appear on it:

I cannot provide the direct link at this moment, but it was in one of the medallion threads in the past 30 days here.

One poster said that she was startled that as she entered the MDR, the screen lit up with her name, photo, and cabin number. ( I believe it was a woman who stated this).

Another poster mentioned that when he or she entered one of the shops, the employee on duty called them by name, and she was thinking that the employee remembered him/ her from a former cruise. But, the employee explained that the guest's name and photo lit up on the video monitor near the cash register.

We are booked on the Regal with some friends of ours for the cruise on October 6. Our friends were just notified by Princess that their cabin will have the medallion. ( Our cabin does not).

So, I should be able to directly report here by the second week of October, how the medallion works in regards to lighting up the video screens in the corridors, bars, shops, MDR, art gallery, etc.

The other thing I am concerned about is the passenger who is a practical joker and pulls the prank of throwing his/her medallion over the railing into the drink, just to "play a joke on the crew and see what happens."

On a royal class ship, there's always going to be some prankster like this, then the entire cruise comes to a halt, missing the next port, while the crew takes a head count of all the passengers. This could cause some major mischief. -- EBC

There are several posters in this thread with first-hand experience using medallions.

Hopefully, one of them can share their experience.

My guess is nothing much would happen. No different than a malfunctioning medallion or one that is "hidden" for a period of time. Signal would "disappear" when away from any sensor. Seek out the passenger with announcements to report to the passenger service desk and/or check their cabin. Said joker will have the joke on them when they can't get into their room and need to wait at the service desk for a replacement of their "lost" medallion.

Ouch! QFT!

I read a post lately, likely upthread, about a false MOB incident that took 3 hours to resolve.

Thinking about it, I suspect such could get resolved much more quickly because when

Security goes to pull tapes for video, they will have a time hack and know from which part

of the ship the tosser had his fling -- unless Mr Murphy visits with his Law.

Even then, the tosser is more likely to hang around to watch for chaos rather than go hide,

and the crew would be circulating with his ***** photo.

(yeah, the puns are intentional)

Quite different. The Medallion would be known to have been on a weather deck, then "on"

the deck below, etc.

The tosser (Aussie pun noted) would have his short-ranged RFID card to get back in his cabin,

but with video of the incident, he'd find out if that ship did or did not have an actual brig.

The large monitors do not show your picture and what cabin you are in.

There is a small iPad type monitor at the bars facing the bartenders, same in the stores that show a small circle picture with your name underneath it. Nothing else is displayed unless they hit on it. No one else can see anything else. So yes, since the stores are usually not that busy, the crew member will look a the monitor they see and call you buy name.

The funny thing is the first day someone was on screen that the bartender was my husband and called him Brad. Therefore for the rest of that cruise, both I and our friends called him Brad!

We had the medallion on our 12/17 Regal sailing so do have first hand experience with it.

I can handle it if the staff has a screen that shows some info.

But, I don't see why this would have to be on screens that are easily viewed by others???

I guess that would be my question.

Staff could conceivably benefit from and have cause to see this info. But, the general passing public... ummmm. NO.

In fact, this should be treated as private, need to know, information, and not available to any other general staff.

I got off the Regal a week ago and we had an ***** cabin. I never once saw my picture or name or cabin number appear on any big screen. I did see my tag a long while I was at some of the screens in the elevator area. It had no identification on it that said it was for me. The crew in the bars or the MDR or the shops may have had an iPad device that had our picture on it. The only place I saw that was at the Ocean Front where I go to check on problems with my medallion. That was only held in the workers hand, not on a wall.

We only hallway screen that ever reacted to anything while I walked by with my ***** was our own cabin. It started reacting about 8 feet away and when I touched the handle or got extremely close, it went into its next mode, which was showing a handle on the screen and the light turning green.
