is that a normal Princess condition for a Promotion?

FREE Onboard Spending Money of up to $1,000 Spending Money per stateroom is based on voyage length and stateroom type. Offer is applicable to first two guests in a stateroom. Guests with single occupancy will receive double the per guest credit amount. Offer does not apply to third or fourth guests.

Onboard spending money may be used on a single voyage only, is not redeemable for cash, cannot be used in the casino, expires at the end of that voyage and is not applicable during the land portion of cruisetours.

Onboard spending money is based on the ship’s onboard currency.

They probably got tired of people cashing out the non-refundable OBC.

The line gives the OBC in order to coax you into buying stuff on the ship. The $1000 they give you probably ends up costing the line less than $250 if used in the intended way. By cashing it out in the casino, you are costing them the full $1000

Gosh...never noticed that before. Went back to look at the old 3 for free (Cyber Sale) covering summer 2018-spring 2019 cruises and it actually has that wording in it. I never realized that.

Treat yourself:

  • Make Specialty Dining reservations--at least two
  • Order a bottle of Dom Perignon--see how many heads that turns in the dining room
  • Ultimate Ship's Tour
  • Ultimate Balcony Dinner--if you like it, do it again
  • Spa Massage--same
  • The Sanctuary

Then, you can still go to the casino. :D

This is pretty standard for most cruise lines' OBC, with a couple of odd exceptions. However if your Travel Agent buys you some OBC, you might be able to use that in the casino. This is common to most lines.

The rule has been in place on all the Carnival Corp lines for quite some time: non-refundable OBC cannot be used in the Casino (or for any other games, including Bingo) or for additional gratuities you write in on the chit in specialty restaurants, bars, the spa et al. Of course it can be used for the daily service charge, but they don't want you to "gift" any leftover OBC to your favorite crew member.

But while I have seen this enforced on at least one other line (Cunard) never on Princess--I don't even know if they have the mechanism onboard to separate which charges are not eligible for the non-refundable OBC that gets used before any refundable you may have.

The no casino wording has always been there, however until their accounting system can separate refundable, non-refundable AND no casino, it means nothing.

Usually, our non-refundable uses up most or all of our OBC, then all that's left is the refundable. If the left over OBC is more than $25, you can play a little in the casino and cash out. No one on Princess complains, as long as you play a little. If you just try to go to the cashier cage and cash out without playing, you'll be told "we aren't an ATM".

Different opinion: Not everyone wins money in the casino, so using OBC for the casino might just be the best way for Princess to get it back. Statistically, the casino must make money or it wouldn't be there, so any mechanism that makes it easy for people to spend money is a plus for Princess.

You haven’t been reading Cruise Critic long enough... everyone wins in the casino!!! <—- should have gone for four exclamation marks.

I am a light slots player and usually use OBC on the other lines I have sailed. I did not get my OBC from the landmark sale.

Can I assume that I can use some of my OBC in the slot machines. or am I going to have to buy casino credit?

People complaining they can't cash out a part of $1000 and make money? I would never even think that! But then even when I had alot of OBC it went as following: if gratuities were not free, first monies went to make my gratuities free. Then if I had more, I usually do private tours but have maybe 1-2 Princess tours, so there is that covered for free; then if I still had anything left, I scrapbook so no matter how bad I always buy the get on board picture and maybe if really good, one or two more. Then if I have OBC left, I always buy a couple little souvenirs for my little guys, etc. Then if anything left, I don't drink usually but on a cruise I have probably one drink, so OBC would cover that. Well, you can see that I have never ended a cruise with a credit even when I had a lot (my best was $1750 on one cruise). I believe I use it as it is meant and it becomes a real savings to me. I think you should be able to use it in the casino to play but not to cash out. Someone figured out the cashing out way thru the casino, and Princess has just plugged that. I mean they didn't mean the OBC to cover personal wants of someone after the cruise was done!

Totally agree...first of all the ship has no idea what promo u used when booking the cruise...Or do they?;)

On the Ruby both in April & May.....

I always have the most interesting on-board acct statements......and now with per-paid excursions and cancellations. showing as debits and credits, add in a few OBCs, grats, laundry, drinks......and casino "purchases"..a once simple statement, can now be challenging to understand.

At one time I remember seeing OBC could not be used for gratuities..did not apply in practice, and my bet is nor will this statement....with the Landmark sale....

This attitude was so prevalent on the RCI boards 10 years ago, the cruise line made major changes. I am still waiting for Princess to follow suit. When RCI took away stock owner ship OBC..Princess added it....as well as Military these perks have not always been...so why are so many posters not gracious...and remarks about having so much OBC they don't know what to do with it..?????.I don't like changes like anyone and I certainly want to get the best value for my money....but I certainly do not look a gift horse in the mouth...just venting....Enjoy...:D

RCI still has stockholder OBC. The problem is it cannot be applied along with some other types of OBC which means much of the time it cannot be added to a booking.
