basser Posted December 1, 2018 #1 Share Posted December 1, 2018 Can anyone recommend a car or van rental place in Skagway Alaska?

Nic6318 Posted December 1, 2018 #3 Share Posted December 1, 2018 Hi Skagway is a very small community, there aren't many companies. Do an internet search "Skagway car rentals". I believe I used AVIS. I also think (if I remember correctly) they aren't associated with the national brand. Just call whichever company you choose directly. They will tell you what they have available. hope this helps have a great cruise
ldubs Posted December 2, 2018 #4 Share Posted December 2, 2018 I know you didn't ask this but as an FYI, last time we were there ( a while back) they had a bus service that covered the town and outskirts. We picked it up after visiting some falls for a ride back into town. Seems it cost a couple bucks, and yes US dollars are accepted (). Just curious, where would you drive? Hi I think you are thinking of Juneau, you were probably at the Mendenhall glacier. From Skagway you can drive into Canada, through British Columbia and into the Yukon. It is quite a scenic drive. No, even I recognize the difference between the Mendenhall glacier and Reid falls outside of Skagway. Haha. They were running a small shuttle type bus for a small fee. I suspect it only ran when cruise ships were in town. Suspect the same thing about the tourist shops. But don't know for certain. Anyway, I bet that would be a beautiful drive. t4jes Posted December 5, 2018 #7 Share Posted December 5, 2018 I've done this drive twice and both times rented from Avis. Thought it looked great and cars looked much better than the competitors in town (I think Sourdough is the other popular one). We got a Camry and it was great for getting out to Emerald Lake. You can easily reserve online through Avis website. Just note that they don't really take discounts (as another poster posted, it doesn't seem to be quite the same as national Avis). hancock Posted December 5, 2018 #8 Share Posted December 5, 2018 Make a reservation and be waiting when they open. Those who are late have to wait on a time consuming line to get their car
Dancing Shoes Posted December 8, 2018 #9 Share Posted December 8, 2018 Sourdough is no longer in business. We got to Avis around 1/2 hour after opening and there was 2 couples ahead of us.
SbbquilterUT Posted December 8, 2018 #10 Share Posted December 8, 2018 We used Avis in Skagway - rented a minivan and took an amazing drive up the Yukon Highway. We did reserve through their site, not Avis website. The pickup is just a short walk past the end of the pier, easy to access.
Jingerwoppy Posted December 31, 2018 #11 Share Posted December 31, 2018 Hope this isn't too late - If you're wanting to rent to see the area, you can rent a jeep in Skagway and drive all you like. We rented there and drove all the way the Emerald Lake as many others have done. Excellent scenery all the way. Also some nice scenery around Skagway - Dyes Road is a nice scenic drive. We drove out there this past July when our RV group stayed in Skagway. Really pretty. Edited January 1, 2019 by Shmoo here

I booked Avis in Skagway on the regular booking website using the AARP discount code and it worked just fine. YMMV.
