divingparent Posted February 24, 2019 #1 Share Posted February 24, 2019 We have booked an Oceania cruise sailing out of New York at 6pm. How long do we need to leave before dinner to take advantage of the views sailing out of New York and what is the best side of the ship to be on as the ship leaves NYC? bigmjh Posted February 24, 2019 #2 Share Posted February 24, 2019 The best view of NY skyline will be on the port side ... view of Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island will be on starboard side.

That is true if the ship leaves from Manhattan (usually) - a little different if it were to sail from Brooklyn.
Rare LHT28 Posted February 24, 2019 #4 Share Posted February 24, 2019 dining venues do not open until 630 pm so you have time to enjoy the sailaway

I should think you'll be past the sights by 7:30
bob brown Posted February 24, 2019 #7 Share Posted February 24, 2019 Manhattan Cruise Terminal to Statue of Liberty approximately 30 minutes...to Verrazzano Bridge approximately 60 minutes...to pilot station approximately 120 minutes. After passing under the Bridge, the scenery is mostly over.
Roccaforte Posted February 24, 2019 #8 Share Posted February 24, 2019 Always thrilling to sail past the Statue of Liberty (starboard side). We don’t make dinner reservations on sail away day so we can linger on deck with the drink of the day🍾

Just book a later dinner in the Specialties or go to the GDR or Terrace on that night depends on your priorities 😉
nyfeds Posted February 24, 2019 #10 Share Posted February 24, 2019 Sailaway out of NYC is stunning! Don't miss a NY second of it!
edgee Posted February 24, 2019 #11 Share Posted February 24, 2019 With some great luck we secured a 630 table in Polo on Insignia facing aft windows of ship. We had a slightly delayed sailaway out of Manhattan with awesome views in both directions. Most memorable sailaway in 50+ cruises we have taken.

Rare pinotlover Posted February 25, 2019 #14 Share Posted February 25, 2019 We enjoy sail away from Horizons unless the weather is just fantastic when we’ll go up on the top deck outside. Great views in all directions. Getting those tables in the rear of Toscana or PG does take great luck and shouldn’t be planned on. After watching the sail away to satisification we go to the GDR on our schedule and our convenience , not some mandated reservations time. Plenty of days for Specialties later on during the cruise. IMO , don’t miss any portion of one of the greatest sail sways because you booked dinner to early!
LB_NJ Posted February 28, 2019 #15 Share Posted February 28, 2019 If you have not sailed out of New York before it is definitely worth staying on deck and watching it. My guess is an open area in back of the ship where yow have at least a 180 degree view. That way you can see the Statute of Liberty, the New York Skyline from the south, etc.
StanandJim Posted February 28, 2019 #16 Share Posted February 28, 2019 Aft views on Oceania can be tricky to find unless one has a buddy who has booked an aft facing Suite. The unaffiliated would wind up on the Terrace of the buffet restaurant (an extremely tough ticket), or up on the jogging track which encircles the smokestack (no seating and windy windy windy). I'd recommend Horizons, with its' comfy seating and cocktail service 🍸.

That area around the base of the stack is crew only on the R ships. More reason to party in Horizons as one leaves New York Harbor!
