Smoking in the casino

We just got off of the Carnival Vista yesterday, the smoke in the casino was awful. It’s true there are many non-gamblers standing around and smoking which made matters much worse. Why can’t Carnival recognize that they loose business by allowing smoking in their casino?

I can tell you that the smoke from the casino is horrendous on NCL Breakaway class, because of the way their casino is set up, in an open area to deck 6,7, & 8. I can only vouch for that class. The smoke travels throughout all three decks, and is impossible to escape. It’s a really awful casino design. My last cruise on RCCL was in 2015, and it was about the same as Carnival, from what I can remember. I do not know if they’ve changed any of their policies since I cruised them last. I do know that the hubby and I would spend a lot more time (and money) in the casino if it was smoke free. We just can’t tolerate it. We almost hate to even walk through it to get to the other areas on the other side of it. It really is disgusting.

People cruise different ways some drive and get an inside cabin. A week on Carnival is for us is $4000, including airfare, it's $5000 for Sandals A.I. Yes, we are Platinum and like the perks. We get a Cloud 9 Spa balcony, Cheers, and eat at least 2 nights a week in the Steakhouse, add shore excursions, and it adds up. Can you you sail economically, yes.

I’ve sailed with other lines and here’s what I observed: 

 

• Allure of the Seas - the casino was split between smoking and non smoking. I saw more people playing slots in the non smoking area. I don’t recall if the table games were split also. 
• Norwegian Breakaway - the casino seemed more spread out.  I didn’t feel annihilated with smoke when I was playing.

No offense taken! I’m sure out of Charleston, the cruises can be very interesting because of its location attracking a wide variety of people from different areas.

 

Thanks for the reminder about the Allure... I can’t wait to sail on that ship again soon. She’s something special.

If your last comment was true, which it isn’t, Carnival’s casinos would be smoke free tomorrow.

This is absolutely true. My hubby was a heavy smoker, until his mother died in 1989 from COPD (all those years sitting in smoky bingo halls, every single night). He quit cold turkey at that point, but he will forever be known by his PCP as a former smoker, and they have even hinted that he is developing COPD as well. 30 years smoke free, and he STILL is at risk! It never goes away, people. You have a better chance of not developing anything if you quit, but that risk will always be stamped right on your medical record forever.

Thing is with ship casinos, would it really be that hard to crack a window on each side?  Especially when the ship is moving?

Many folks today don't follow rules. If the rules were followed by passengers, or better enforced by the cruise lines, maybe it would solve problems. Until that happens or until smoking is banned, folks will need to accept the fact that there are still smokers in the world and they have rights too.

We got off the Lengend last week and it was the smelliest  cruise we have been on. The Casino was the least used one that I have seen but when we would walk through every table and bar stool was filled with smokers in front of the Casino bar. Since that is a designated smoking area they can smoke and if I don't like it I don't have to stay or go through there. We completely skipped gambling on this cruise for the first time as it was so bad with smoke and the friends and family we traveled with felt them same as some of them spent about 10 minutes in the Casino and then just gave up. The smokers who smoke in the designated areas I understand but our group occupied several balconies on both sides of the ships and almost all of us smelled cigarette smoke on the balconies at times. In the past if we saw someone smoking on the balcony we would simple ask them not to as it isn't allowed and we usually get a "sorry" and they don't do it again. Only once did we have someone next door to us get extremely mad cuss us out and then they started chain smoking on their balcony my wife just went in and called GS and in a few minutes someone knocked on their door and they all went into the cabin and we never saw them on the balcony the rest of the cruise. This time we could never see who was doing it. We also while walking down the hall passed rooms that apparently they were smoking in as the hallway smelled of smoke a few times.

Freedom of speech is a right.  Smoking is a habit.

I agree Carnival and other lines need to do something regarding the ventilation in the casinos. 

 

While they opine it's working, it's not.  Segregating smoking from non-smoking without a wall/structure between, does little.  Just walking through may smell bad but not really affect you.  Hanging around the casino bar to watch sporting events or to gamble as a non-smoker the smoke will still cling to your clothing and hair.

Agree wholeheartedly. Once, before smoking was banned on airlines, we had the seats directly behind the smoking section. The people in the last row of the smoking section directly in front of us actually did not smoke during the flight; what they did was constantly hold lit cigarettes all the way from NY City to San Francisco. It was pure HELL.

As a former smoker, might I point out that it is both?  Smoking is a habit driven by an addiction to nicotine.  And yes, each time I lit up it was a choice.  And when I finally quit for the last time, that too was a choice.  But the addiction is very real, and very strong.  And so smokers choose to continue the habit.  You're both right.  It's all of the above. 

 

Also, it's disgusting and I wish it would be banned from the casino as well as all other indoor venues on every ship.  I don't think, however, that it should be banned entirely from ships.  Several comfortable, well-equipped, and semi-sheltered outdoor areas should be available and clearly marked as smoking sections on each ship.

As a former smoker I am sensitive to it. We just got off the Magic and it's absurd that they expect children to traverse the interior of the ship though a smokey casino. 

 

They had one non-smoking BJ table.

Both my DH & I don't smoke we play the slots. I get upset if I lose $2 😂. We play the 5 or 10 cent slots. I always walk out a winner but it's usually not by much.
