So long as you keep your phone in airplane mode and just use the ship's intranet, there will be no charges. You will only incur charges if you take your phone out of airplane mode or if you pay in advance to use the ship's Wi-fi to access the Internet.

I'm old school. I downloaded and set up  the OcearReady app on my phone after several attempts recently. I got our profiles in there, scanned our two passports, added addresses and whatever was required to "make it green". Finally got to the end and I soon got an email telling me it had been updated for us. BUT - I believe there are many associated apps available... in which I have zero interest; I only did the OR as I read somewhere it would expedite our boarding process. Our next cruise is on a Medallion ship, and I plan to use the minimal "benefits" of that, such as "automatic" unlocking or our cabin door, better WiFi for my laptop, etc. Most if not all of the other so-called benefits don't actually benefit my wife or me. I plan on turning our phones to OFF and sticking them into the safe until arriving back in the USA to disembark.

I tried yesterday to logon our OR app on my wife's phone and was not able to do so: all sorts of error messages about logon and passwords. I have not, nor do I intend to, try to log onto the OR app on my phone. I only set it up for the reasons in the first paragraph. IMHO, and it seems I am in the minority here, the app doesn't really do much else for us. But I already know I am a dinosaur!😉

Based on what I've sent above: do you see any issues doing anything on board I could not do before the OR app(s) were written?

Thanks, ya'll.

No, your medallion will function just like the old cruise card without using the apps.

I had just arrived at the same conclusion, reading about various problems above and I thought, 'This is just to make embarcation quicker???' Not for me. I wonder if Princess might make it mandatory and reduce the number of clerks at check in.

Well, they can try to make it mandatory but, that won’t work for us.

We do not have cellphones or any kind of tablet.  There is no way for us to download apps.

We we will be showing up at the port with our paper boarding pass and check in the old fashioned way.

There is no reason for us to invest in any of that technology.  We use a desktop or laptop computer at home.  When we are on the ship we don’t need any access to a computer.

I'm with you. I'm old school but use technology as a tool for MY convenience when I need to. I am not glued to my smartphone and don't intend to be on a cruise. I want to feel and hear my cabin door lock as I leave the cabin and not depend on it locking itself when I'm down the hall.  I don't need the shopkeepers calling out my name every time I walk in. I don't contribute to the casino's revenue, so I won't be gambling via an app on the ship. I depend on a personal touch with the servers to get a glass of Scotch in the evening and a two dollar bill wrapped around a cruise card gets me timely refills and generous pours. I don't need to track She Who Must Be Obeyed on the ship, she usually shows up sooner or later. Check in time at the pier when I'm going to be on the ship for 29 nights is not a big issue. I'm there to relax and not set a speed record for boarding.

Am I missing something really important?

Can I get a barrel chair returned to my standard balcony room with the medallion?

And good for you! I applaud your independence. 😎I feel pretty much the same way, but I finally gave in an got a "smart phone" a few years ago just to keep in touch with my wife on my solo motorcycle trips. But yeah, we go on board and the phones are OFF! I am taking a laptop just to check our flight home post-cruise. I didn't do that one time, the flight was cancelled, and the airline did not notify anyone. We got to stand/sit around for about 8 hours in FLL; not fun.

I will be taking all our pertinent documents, printed to the terminal "just in case". It's the smart and safe way to do things IMO.

Couldn't you use the smartphone instead of a laptop to check flight ?

I agree with above sentiments - we got smartphones to keep in touch with daughter and granddaughter - they are the only people who have our cell number 🙂

Of course, but much easier on old eyes to use the laptop. Plus the laptop is coming anyway for many other uses.

@AskOceanMedallion  Is the new Medallion Class App compatible with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and for how long do you think it will be supported on that OS.

Hi @hpeabodyYes the new MedallionClass app is supported on the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS and we intend to support it for the foreseeable future.

My iOS devices just updated my MedallionClass app & it automatically added my November cruise.  Prior to today’s update it wouldn’t accept my cruise’s reservation information so that’s an improvement.

I just had the same experience. The MedallionClass app updated on my iPhone and when I opened the app, our November cruise on the Sky Princess was in there - and it had not been there previously. So I added all the other details and we're now "Ocean Ready" and I have screenshots of our OceanReady Passes.

Nice to meet another solo rider, Doug.  I generally do a long distance ride each fall after Labor Day. Rode to all four corners of the contiguous US a few years ago - 48 days and 11,700 miles - and in 2021 I plan to ride the Lincoln Highway coast-to-coast. How about you?

Old school, but not ready to take up the rockin' chair yet!

I apologize to all for this divergence....

My bike is gone. I used a BMW R1200RT and toured pretty much the entire western USA and some parts of East TN, SC, NC and KY. Sold it about a year ago when my riding partner quit riding....plus at age 72 it seemed wise. Since then I'd "regressed" to four-wheeler excitement.<g> No need to reply; we need to keep the thread on topic........😎

Hey Doug:

I'm with you. My wife and I just returned from an Alaskan cruise last month on the Royal and we experienced word for word what you just experienced. After I finally entered my details and scanned the passports I couldn't get access again, saying that my password or user id was in wrong. When we got aboard we did exactly what you said you were going to do - put our cell phones on airplane mode and place them in the safe. We had a great cruise and didn't miss all of the bells and whistles of the OR app.

Us dinosaurs have to stick together and you too will likely have a great cruise too without those bells and whistles.

Always good to see more "dinosaurs" deciding to forego the "bells and whistles" that are available on their phones and other smart devices by leaving them off and in the safe thereby not cluttering up the intranet bandwidth on the ship.  This makes it easier for the rest of us that love the features of the intranet apps that provide instant access to the 'Patter", destination information, account information, our reservation information, tours, ship map and venue locations all right at our fingertips at all times anywhere and anytime.  We are paying for it so we are going to use it.

posted by the OM rep above ...

Earlier I said while I easily made an account on OceanReady with my Android phone, I could not  login the next day to scan my passports and complete the other functions. You can see my experiences in posts above.

I called the the OM rep number, and talked to a Princess agent who basically confirmed my booking info, offered me the opportunity to order flowers for out cabin, etc, and said she would have an OceanReady customer service rep call me. Well, 24 hours later no call. I am not impressed, Princess.😧

Doug

Follow up to above and my trials of getting Ocean Ready to work. Later I did finally go through the process of putting everything into the OR app. However,  when I tried to log on later that day to show my wife and check what I'd entered, I was not able to do so; same errors messages about ID and passwords incorrect (they were not).

Back on 8/23 Princess said an OR "expert" would call me and help. Well, yeah, "Cory" finally did today (9/5 - about 2 weeks later) and left a message. Said she'd "fixed" everything and gave me a new password. Also suggested I download, install, and use the Medallion app instead of the OR as it was "easier to use".

I proceeded to log onto my OR app with the password she gave; it worked. Everything appeared to be there that I'd put into the app before, but for some reason my voyage or trip or whatever was blank. I tried to re-enter my voyage booking number, but got an error message saying it was invalid or "already linked"; whatever that means.

I took a look at what the Medallion app is without downloading and installing. There is nothing there that interests me or would be useful.

Two days ago I printed our boarding passes and luggage tags. So I have what I need to get on the ship....hopefully.

I am still not impressed, Princess. But I will feel a lot more impressed if doing all the stuff on the OR app actually gets me onto the ship quicker. But I am not holding my breath! 😎

Not to belabor the point, sir, but all that information you are happy to access on your phone is also available in printed form. I've already printed off all that other forms you mentioned other than the Princess Patter. I'll just wait until we're on board to get a printed copy. Besides, I also want to "not clutter up the ship's intranet" with information I already have. I'll just use my intranet minutes for something else as needed....might want to check email sometime during the cruise........😎

You have intranet and internet confused. Using the applications do not use up your internet minutes. Intranet use is free to access the Patters, etc. Printing off the forms will lengthen your boarding time as compared to being Ocean Ready.

I have a question.... or two... I have a cell phone, my husband does not.  He figures He's with me... why have a cell phone?  I get his feelings about having it.  HERE is the question.... IF I download the app does the app take care of both medallions?

Is there an advantage to having the app on my phone vs. NOT having the app on my phone?

THANKS for any advice 🙂

Yes it does. I completed ours - medallions being shipped in Nov .
