A friend just returned from a La To Hawaii cruise. Won 10k on a slot. PAid him in cash. Is this normal. He was very nervous because his picture with the the Captain was plastered all over the ship.

I've never really worried about being mugged by a fellow passenger. I guess it could happen, but there are cameras all over the ship so it would be hard to get away with.  The other concern might be that a crew member steals it from your room safe?  Again hard to get away with since I believe with key cards (certainly with medallions) they know who enters your room and when. Perhaps you can turn it in for OBC/casino credit to keep it safe?

U.S. law.

A person(s) entering the U.S. with $10,000 or more in cash or other monetary instruments must declare it when entering. There is no tax, duty or other charges involved, but failure to declare can result in forfeiture of the money. Of course, it is considered income and subject to income taxes.

If he settles his bomb card account using cash, then he'd likely be under the amount to declare.  However, the Fed's take those declarations seriously and your friend should not even consider fudging.  If he gets off the boat with 10k or more in cash, declare it!

What is a bomb card?

This why I don't generally use my kindle to post...too many changes to what I've written and I'm bound to miss something.  His onboard account could be settled in cash at the end of the cruise.  By the time tips, drinks etc are paid out of his winnings he would be under the declare limit (unless he brought cash to pay it, then he may need to buy something crazy in the shops or take his 20 closest friends to the Crown Grill or other such).

When I won $1,861 I had to sign paperwork and received cash - not the same amount of the lucky man with $10.000, but you

receive a copy of the paperwork which will show why you are carrying that much money off the ship.  He will receive a 1099 next Feb or March showing that he won the $10,000 and will have to declare on this federal/state income taxes.

As we get closer to the end of the year, he can go to the players club website and request a win/loss statement from this cruise and any others he might do this year.  It'll be helpful to possibly reduce the amount of tax he has to pay,

Just divide it between yourself and spouse - nothing to declare.

Understand the 10k limit, checked that box many times.Still do Not understand the priors statement.

Do you mean dividing between spouses?.  Each would be carrying less than 10K, therefore nothing to declare.  Do you mean you carried more than 10K into the country many times?  You must be one terrific gambler.

I had a 10K slot win last June on the first night of our cruise and had the option of cash OR a check mailed in 6 weeks.  Didn't want to chance paperwork getting lost so I took the cash option.  Casino personnel told me to bring my passport and pick it up at the cashier with the pink slip they gave me whenever I wanted.  I waited until the last afternoon to pick it up.   We had family members traveling with us so they carried $2000 off the ship for us.

What are these wonderful slots that pay out $10k? I've seen several folks post about winning $10k on slots and have wondered what kind of slots they were playing and how much they "invested" before such amazing wins.

My wife hit a $3,000 jackpot on a penny machine first night out. Probably was maybe $100 in for night when she hit.  I once hit 3 separate $1,000 jackpots on video poker in a 12 hour period

Can you still put cash in the slot machines or do you have to charge it to your account?

You can still use cash. In order to cash out you have to use your casino account though.
