Stop removing tips

Why are employees throughout this organization always openly discussing their wages? And why are passengers trying to pry this information from them on a regular basis? This information should stay between the employee and their employer.

Oh, I’m sorry for actually caring about their tips!

I asked about tips because I was worried they weren’t getting the money they deserve.

It’s our business if Carnival is labeling OUR money as gratuities when in reality it’s not.

This should be your concern as well if it involves your money.

An awesome room steward I had a few years ago. He told us if you tip at the bar, the bartenders get the tips but the room stewards and wait staff do not get the electronic tips. We asked our steward because we had a relative that told us about this and we didn’t believe him.

So you're insinuating that Carnival is stealing the gratuities and tips from the crew and not giving them anything but their base salary and board based on what a stateroom steward told you? And that Carnival is keeping the automatic gratuity amounts for themselves?

Very strong accusations there as Heald stated many times that is untrue. How do you know he just wasn't fishing for a higher tip from you?

Of course he would say its untrue! Lol!

I addressed your other concerns in my original post. If you want to believe a corporation thats on you. I’ll continue making sure my stewards and waitstaff get the tips they deserve.

Hey, you do you. That’s why one can remove them so one can tip as they prefer if said person believes a tip is warranted.

This is not directed at any one poster:

This continuing/continuous/contentious tipping debate is perplexing. I don't ask my bartenders, servers (I was one at one time) or nail technicians how they are paid. When I leave a tip, I assume it is handled as agreed upon between employee & employer. If my nail technician has to split tips with others in the salon, that is because it was agreed upon when they accepted the job (or at some point thereafter).

If an employee doesn't like how they are paid, they are free to find another job. As an employee, if I felt that I wasn't being compensated in the manner I agreed to I would: 1) have a discussion with my managers/HR 2) if it wasn't resolved to my satisfaction I would resign. If a cruise line was operating unethically/illegally/or both, I would choose to spend my money elsewhere.

I honestly believe that if the employees were truly not receiving any part of the DSC/gratuities there would have been a revolt long ago. There are several thousand crew on board each ship. How is it that there aren't lawsuits and tons of media coverage on this, if in fact it's happening?

If you’re so cheap or broke that you have to remove the tips, maybe you should not be spending the money you do to even go on a cruise.

Love when people say this - Don't think this can be inforced and I don't think the cruise lines care enough. They want people on the ship spending in the shops and casino, upgrading their meals and taking excursions. I don't think they care about the tips and that why people can remove them and nothing they will do to you or check that you gave cash- Heck you can even use the tip money to place a deposit on the next cruise!

They openly discuss this so that we have to debate on Cruise Critic - Everyone has a friend on the ship that told them something....

I usually avoid tipping threads because it’s just so stupid but I have to comment on this. If the cruise line was really stealing their tips do you think they would continue to work there?

They are free to find something else if the working conditions are so poor. And I think it is unbelievably rude to ask them what they make or how tips are distributed. I wouldn’t ask the cashier at my local grocery store or the maid at a regular hotel.

These people are not children. It is none of your business what they make and so condescending for you to think you have the right to ask.

I am a firm believer in tipping how you want....auto...cash...combination..etc.  Whatever you wish.

However, this idea that carnival does not give the employees the auto tips is absolutely FALSE.     Do you really think these thousands and thousands of workers would stay employeed...and keep renewing their contracts if they were not receiving their auto tips?   If a steward told you that...he was lying to get extra cash.   But common sense would tell you that is not true.

I like the auto gratuities... one less thing I have to think about while relaxing on my cruise.

Honestly... what business is it of anybody regarding the pay of someone else ?  Do y'all quiz the Manager at a restaurant regarding the distribution of any TIP you might leave, before leaving the TIP ?   Geeeeez

For myself, when I tip in CASH with an envelope I get from the Pursers desk, I do it at the end, or the night before I get off the ship.  No one has to tip, but I do believe when I "hand" them the envelope, they should be able to keep the money, and not give it to someone else, as THEY were the ones doing the job for me, not someone else.

Who's definition of what is deserving are you going with? Someone from the US or a 3rd world country? The exchange rate alone can be huge and then look at average wages for people and their countries...

They wouldn't stick around 20+ years if they were underpaid in their own opinion.

But you give what makes you feel better and problem solved.

To all the people assuming things about my post. Here you go:

All of you have this misconstrued view of how that conversation went and would love to paint me as the devil but its not the case. Here is how it went: “do you receive the tips we pay to Carnival?” The answer was no.

I never asked how much they make. I asked about TIPS.

Your obsession with social acceptability clearly prevents you from opening your eyes to the truth. Whether it is acceptable or not to ask, it is a fair question. If we could trust carnival (or any large corporation) to disclose how money was distributed, truthfully , these questions wouldn't be asked. I'd rather ask and pay them directly then trust a big money machine to give them MY MONEY that I am alloting for tip. I dont have to trust anyone if I just do it myself.

Do you trust a big restaurant company like Darden? Why don’t you ask those servers how much of credit card tips they keep?

And people have been told. Leadership at carnival has addressed this. You just refuse to accept it. And quite frankly if you feel they rip off their employees why do you continue to sail with them? There are plenty of cruising options.
