wyobean Posted July 5, 2019 #1 Share Posted July 5, 2019 This morning was clear, sunny and beautiful. This afternoon we noticed a haze moving in. Figured it was smoke. About 6:00pm we started smelling it. Visibility has been reduced considerably I am sorry to say. Hoping it is not too bad in Glacier Bay tomorrow. Krazy Kruizers Posted July 5, 2019 #2 Share Posted July 5, 2019 Sorry to hear that the smoke from the fires has moved into other areas in Alaska. Hope it doesn't affect too many of your ports.

SilvertoGold Posted July 5, 2019 #5 Share Posted July 5, 2019 We saw a bit of blue haze last week. Hope this will not be too bad! Hope your cruise is going well otherwise!

rkacruiser Posted July 5, 2019 #8 Share Posted July 5, 2019 Where are the fires that is causing this?
crystalspin Posted July 5, 2019 #9 Share Posted July 5, 2019 I assume the smoke in cruise ports/Glacier Bay would be coming from multi-centered fires on Kenai Peninsula, but there are so many fires currently in Alaska it looks polka-dotted. Including a fairly new one near Talkeena and two in the Wrangell Mtns/Copper River area. The numbers for the year are up to at least 436 (only larger ones on the map). And the heat wave continues. rkacruiser Posted July 5, 2019 #10 Share Posted July 5, 2019 crystalspin, thanks for the information. Not encouraging news for one soon to depart for Alaska. The area around Talkeetna and Denali are areas that I particularly want to visit on this visit.
crystalspin Posted July 5, 2019 #11 Share Posted July 5, 2019 (edited) Right, I know! It's awful on many levels. Here is the gateway to that map: https://www.alaskacenters.gov/trip-planning/stewardship/fires/current Click on "AICC Current Fires Map of Alaska" and click through the couple pop-ups for the map I screen-shot. ETA: clicking on the red fire dot brings up abbreviated data, clicking the right arrow in the little pop-up a few times takes you to a page with full data on individual fire.
