JerseyShore Posted July 21, 2019 #1 Share Posted July 21, 2019 Thinking of booking on the Royal but noticed that the casino opens up to the decks above. Does the stale smoke smell travel to other parts of the ship?
Rare karatemom2 Posted July 21, 2019 #2 Share Posted July 21, 2019 We were on the Royal in May and several times I noticed the smoke smell when I was on the level above where the shops are - it definitely seemed to drift up there at times and was most unpleasant. I liked the Royal but this aspect seems a real design flaw.
Rare patrickmoran Posted July 21, 2019 #3 Share Posted July 21, 2019 We were on the Royal 2 weeks ago and I did not notice any smoke smell. Even in the casino or Club 6 it was hardly noticeable.
Lucky TGO Posted July 21, 2019 #4 Share Posted July 21, 2019 I was on the Royal Princess for 4 cruises total 40 days. I don’t smoke and hate the smell. I never smelled cigarette smoke unless I was walking through the Casino. Tony
Rare 4cats4me Posted July 21, 2019 #5 Share Posted July 21, 2019 Sadly, the smoke smell was pro nounced in April. However, we didn’t notice it the previous year, or on the Regal. That was the only thing we didn’t care foron the Royal. Smell wafted into the gift shop, too.
MandD Posted July 21, 2019 #6 Share Posted July 21, 2019 Didn't notice any tobacco smell on 3 cruises on Royal and 4 on Regal
Rare Jeter02 Posted July 21, 2019 #7 Share Posted July 21, 2019 I've been on both the Royal and Regal a buttload of times. I've never really smelled the smell of smoke on the upper level and like one of the poster says nor have I smelt it in the club 6 as well. And I personally dislike the smell of smoke so I know it would be something I would have noticed if it was predominant or not.
dockman Posted July 21, 2019 #8 Share Posted July 21, 2019 My muster station on Royal was in the casino. Had to sit there for 30+ minutes and entire place smelled like an ash tray.
janina Posted July 21, 2019 #9 Share Posted July 21, 2019 I agree that in the casino it smells like an ash tray but I never noticed the smell until I was in the casino. Never noticed it in the shops and I hate smoking.
skynight Posted July 21, 2019 #10 Share Posted July 21, 2019 (edited) Been on board a total of 62 days. I avoid any areas with smoke, but never found any smoke issue on deck 7 above the casino while passing by. There are no real passenger venues in this area where passengers spend lots of time. There is a shop and the art gallery. Smoking in the casino is restricted to certain slots while playing. There is no smoking at casino tables and at the casino bar, so the amount of smoke is limited. Also no cigar or pipe smoking in the casino. I agree that it was someone's poor design. Newer Royal Class ships do not have this feature. CRUISEWITHH Posted July 21, 2019 #12 Share Posted July 21, 2019 I hate the smell of smoke and found it very offensive on deck 7 above the casino when I was in the shopping area. I can't figure out why they would design an opening above the casino where they allow smoking????
Steelers36 Posted July 21, 2019 #13 Share Posted July 21, 2019 I wonder if Regal, even though just slightly newer, is better somehow. Didn't notice this issue in June. Also, being inside the casino was mostly fine at poker table - no nearby smokers.
MissP22 Posted July 21, 2019 #14 Share Posted July 21, 2019 You can definitely smell it as you walk through & sometimes in the close by shops. By then again I'm sensitive to the stench & can notice it immediately. We usually try to avoid going through the area if at all possible.
Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted July 21, 2019 #15 Share Posted July 21, 2019 I’ve never noticed the smell up above. The smoking area is along the window side so not where the open staircase area is. Also, such few people smoke in there now that it’s a small smoking area.

Smoking is just permitted on the more narrow machine side of the tables. I can’t even smell it at the tables or the other machine side. Also, no smoking on Formal Nights. For me, even on formal nights the casino still smells of smoke hours after they've stopped smoking.

In addition to the problem you describe, the casino is much smaller than on the older ships (agreed that there was a lot of wasted/unused space in those). Considering it's presumably a profit center for the ship, one would think they would make it more inviting. There is very little room to walk in the area with the slot machines especially if people are sitting at/using most of the machines and nearby that area the tables for those games are jammed together.
