NCL Breakaway broken down in Jamaica?

I'm seeing many posts on social media from passengers on the Breakaway saying they're stuck in Ocho Rios with engine trouble. No further details.

 

Anyone have any insider info?

Just confirmed with one of the passengers onboard that they are indeed still docked and won't be receiving an update until 1 hour from now.

Judging by tracking sites it's almost to Grand Cayman.

Well maybe not as close as I thought.. They are sailing at near top speed wherever they are heading

Looking at what I saw, and the post above...less than 10 knots is not top speed. That's relatively pretty slow cruising.

It was sailing at 22.3 knots when I looked.. It appears to be in Grand Cayman looking at webcam

22 is the top speed for BA so it must be doing o.k. now if it was at that speed.

Did your friend say if the engine issues were resolved? Seems to be ok since they made it to Grand Cayman? We board Breakaway on Saturday so this thread caught my eye, has me a little worried. Thanks.

Has anyone ever been on cruises with these issues and noticed it’s impossible to hear the captain’s updates on the loudspeaker, unless you happen to be in your room?

 

for accessibility reasons I wish all announcements were transcribed and released as a text message on the TV screens or through the NCL app so those of us who can’t hear them, can still read them!

 

i try to shush people whenever I’m in a public area and captain’s updates come on, but it never works.

Me too. Too bad you can’t hear them everywhere because everyone is always laughing, chatting, drinking and having a good time, when the announcements are being made.

 

our last captain made a point of saying that he was “speaking from the bridge” Every time he spoke. I wonder if that’s a legal requirement.

Cruise Director punch line - "I would like to meet this Captain Speaking" - always see the other Captains on the ship

the Master of the vessel and that Staff Captain but where is Captain Speaking - probably with Waldo.

 

About that "ENGINE" problem - like the other NCL ships there are 4 engines and 2 (azipod) propellers.

The azipods are electric driven props and require a good deal of electrical energy from the 4 diesel electric

engines to move the ship at the rated 22ks top speed. The engines also provide lighting and a host of other

electrical functions (think of those electrical one-arm bandits in the casino). Lose the power of one engine

and speed must be reduced to maintain these other functions or increase the speed and forget about using

the customer comfort features.

 

The STAR has been running around on one engine fumes for some time now and there was mentioned earlier

about that ship of another cruise line still 4 months from getting the engine replaced.

 

No folks you will not be using oars over-the-side to move the ship - so it is back to cruising as usual !

Isn't that what cruises are about " laughing, chatting, drinking, and having a good time"?

It is always hard to hear them.  Hilariously though, every captain always sounds like Strongbad.

You don’t go at top speed as you approach the anchorage.
