Diverted to San Juan

Cruise Director John just came over the loud speaker to tell us we are being diverted to San Juan for a passenger.  Of course, people are spreading rumors wondering if this man has COVID-19.  Nothing is being said about the reasons due to HIPPA laws, so the rumor mill is churning.  The ship is currently speeding towards San Juan at 21.9 knots, with the distance between St Barts and San Juan approx 190 nautical miles.

We’ve been experiencing the storm from hell.  Started early this morning and it’s 4:30 pm and it’s still bad.  You know how rough it is when they do a full announcement at 7am warning passengers.  We are in a Vista on deck 8, on Riviera, and one wave hit our balcony door.

We never did dock in San Juan to offload the passenger, but the Captain announced that the man and his wife did leave the ship, and since we didn’t hear a helicopter, I can assume he left via a Coast Guard boat.  The Captain did make a general announcement that the man had a heart issue

Captain just announced that all ships in Oceania’s fleet will immediately begin full on sanitation procedures, which sounds like Code Red.  He said they will begin a complete sanitization of the ship immediately.

The passenger was evacuated by helicopter this morning off San Juan in one of those basket beds.  Many passengers have photos of this evacuation, which occurred while a beautiful rainbow was seen in the skies.  I was not yet up but saw amazing photos of this event taken by a fellow passenger with a very fancy camera from the (pool?) deck.

As current and future passengers, this whole situation has indeed been frustrating and stressful to us all.  But, think about the poor crew members.  Lots more work, plus the uncertainty of the virus itself.  They really deserve a big 'thank you'.

We are currently on Regatta in the South Pacific and we had the announcement of code red,  level 2 this morning. Interesting that it’s across the whole fleet, reassuring in some ways as Sounds like there is no specific threat to any ship, just precautionary?

Kitty, where is Riviera and where was the bad storm>. Stay safe!

Not Kitty, but the storm was in the Caribbean on our first sea day back from St. Barts to Miami.  Our cabin also is on Deck 8 and no waves came even close to our balcony door. (We did see waves hitting Deck 5.). Today, our second sea day, all is calm once again and the sun has returned.

About the best reason NOT to cruise now.   Being on the ship during a code red is  awful. Been there, done that.   It may be needed but not what we are paying for in a cruise.

It is not really bad. Crew is constantly cleaning.  The railings everywhere are continuously being wiped. In the buffet, they wipe the table and chairs after each use, placemats are changed, crew delivers drinks and silverware, etc.  paper menus, plastic covers on elevator keys, etc.  Pools are closed.   it isn’t as bad as Noro.  Still have pillows and seat cushions. Library is open.

Sounds like a lot of those "things" should be done all the time....Not just when we have a Coronavirus scare.  Okay - open the pools, but cleaning railings, wiping tables and chairs after each use, covers on elevator keys.....why not all the time?  Why wait for an infection?  Prevent it in the first placed.

Okay, one more thought (think about it before you "blast me").  With all the electronic "Gizmos" we have today, why not "connect" a hand sanitizer dispenser to the inside wall next to the door of all public restrooms.  When leaving the restrooms, the door won't open unless you stick your hand/s under the sanitizer and it "squirts" some "stuff" on your hands??  Since many people don't seem to have the sense or common decency to wash their hands on their own, make it necessary before they can "escape" the restroom.

In my experience, this type of cleaning is indeed done most all the time.   Seems like you always see crew walking through the ship wiping things down.

They do  wipe  down the elevator buttons /railings  etc..   they are  very discreet

we have seen them in the stairwells often wiping the railing  even on Noro free cruises

Not sure on the menu covers  but I carry a bottle of gel & use it after I  check the menu

The biggest issue is Pax that feel they are so clean after using the loo that soap & water is not for them 🙄

Watching you very carefully for my own benefit (April 14 Regatta) as well as many who are on the next few Tahiti sailings. Have you determined what this is about? And how are things with the sailing- missed or shortened port times, health screenings? Hope you are having a fabulous time.

Take care.

The code red cleaning regime (across the O fleet, and over on Regent as well) is presumably to help reduce the spread of germs/virus that MAY be onboard.
