rukkian Posted October 15, 2020 #1 Share Posted October 15, 2020 I have seen conversations comparing cove to regular balconies, and have been interested. We just rebooked (4th try) for our first carnival cruise in 24 years (our honeymoon). We have our 18 and 20 yo sons that will be in the room with us, and have a couple of questions. The cove balcony are quite a but cheaper (240 for the 4 of us), so at this point that is what I picked, but I want to make sure it makes since. 1. Are cove balcony rooms the same size as a regular balcony rooms? From deck plans, it seems to be smaller, but was not sure. 2. We are currently in 2278 on horizon. From the maps, it looks to be under shore excursions, which seems like it should be quiet at night, but I also see there is a dance floor near. Is that going to be an issue? 3. Since this is fairly far forward, are we likely to get a ton of spray? Thanks in advance for your replies, just trying to get the best experience for my family after all the headaches of this trip that we originally booked in 2018 with other family. Rare crewsweeper Posted October 15, 2020 #2 Share Posted October 15, 2020 The cabin sizes are the same. Layout may be different. Cove balconies are supposedly 10 sq ft larger, but probably, not noticeable. Your cabin is back behind the Shore Excursion desk, should be no interference from dance floor or lobby bar. You are actually in the forward part of midships near the mid ship elevators. Rocking should be reasonably less as you are closer to the ocean. Spray is going to depend on weather and height of seas. "Normal" oceans of 3-5 seas shouldn't affect you.

Coves are our favorite, and we always book under Shore Excursions or Guest Services. It’s a great location and very quite. We are booked in January in 2270. It’s our favorite because there’s only one neighbor balcony. Edited October 15, 2020 by MeganGC1983
evandbob Posted October 15, 2020 #4 Share Posted October 15, 2020 I had booked cabin #2278 on a casino fare for a solo cruise that's since been cancelled. I picked it because of its location under the shore excursion desk, while knowing that it can get salty and wet because of spray. The room steward will wipe down the dried sea salt each morning. If anyone gets motion sickness (I don't), it can be triggered by being so close to the water which seems to zip by at this low level. A mid deck balcony will have a much calmer effect, as well as a wider vista of sea scenery. However, being solo, I felt I could easily deal with the negatives. Avoiding being under the galley was my main objective.
kona_wahine Posted October 15, 2020 #5 Share Posted October 15, 2020 Coves are the best. I’d always pick a cove then even a balcony on the lido deck. Never had an issue with spray. It’s like being right on the ocean. Rooms always the same size, We have always picked 2288 on previous cruises, dream and vista, and super quiet.
rukkian Posted October 15, 2020 Author #6 Share Posted October 15, 2020 Thanks all, you are helping me be at ease. I am the planner, and I figured it would all be okay, but always strive to get everything done to the little details. My wife is one that will know we are doing Carnival, and probably the dates, but has not clue what ship we are on or ports we are going to. I try to make it all seem really easy, but then I also obsess about the small things.

If you are fifty now, you will be around 300(?) at the time of this cruise. Save that money for a Mars trip. 1

Usually you can save some money on a balcony.

And so the joke is explained, but let's go another step deeper.....at some point (hopefully) we will again be nowhere near fifty but can look back at the fun times and laughs we had back then. Just maybe not in the year 2270 though. Edited October 16, 2020 by evandbob
tandemcruzr Posted October 16, 2020 #17 Share Posted October 16, 2020 The Cove balcony is deeper than the regular balcony. Each one is the same width.

Moviela Posted October 17, 2020 #19 Share Posted October 17, 2020 Your selection of a cove balcony and its location is excellent. Office space above. close to elevators, cabins below, and life boats providing shade on the balcony. There is something comforting of being close to the water, with maybe a tinge of sea spray. I am sure you will find time on the balcony relaxing and enjoyable. I have traveled the world with my adult children, two fine men, and on a few occasions have had to share arrangements with them, like the four of us in a fabric tent in Tanzania, all went well. I know a cruise vacation is expensive and I fully respect people who stay 4 and 5 in a cabin, but there are issues with where to put all the stuff, and who gets to climb the ladder to sleep on the drop down bunk. The use of the bathroom might be cause for some delicate scheduling and planning. You might think about an interior cabin across the hall from you, or a porthole interior forward from you. You are going to have a good time. Horizon is a wonderful ship.
cellfree Posted October 17, 2020 #20 Share Posted October 17, 2020 rukkian, thank you for starting this "cove" balcony discussion, because of it am going to try one, any other cove cruisers out this with thoughts - positive of course - realize there may be some negative!
darth frosty Posted October 17, 2020 #21 Share Posted October 17, 2020 We were in the same cabin last Dec. perfect location close to the elevator and no noise from the floor above. Cove balcony cabin size IMO is no difference than other similar category rooms.
cellfree Posted October 17, 2020 #22 Share Posted October 17, 2020 Booked a Cove on Horizon for January 2021, moved $ from cancelled five night cruise and the $300 OBC, this is a six night so if it doesn't go and Carnival keeps same pattern I should get $600 OBC for next rebooking, but I sure hope it goes, remains to be seen, love the aniticpation and hate the cancellation. I did book it though my PVP who called me within five minutes of sending an email and he was able to move everything over at once. BTW when I go on-line to look at cruises it tells you how many people are booking at that time, looks like everyone is trying to get on a ship! cellfree Posted October 19, 2020 #23 Share Posted October 19, 2020 Cove Balcony experts - just looking (again) at available Coves on Horizon. 2276 is close to elevator and is a choice - can anyone tell me what is above 2314 - there seems to be a spacing between the life boats on Deck 3 - I wouldn't want to be in 2314 and find out that above it on Deck 3 people walk out to smoke - thoughts? I have booked 2314 but can switch to 2276. As you can see, too much time on my hands!

tandemcruzr Posted October 19, 2020 #25 Share Posted October 19, 2020 Looks to me like 2314 is under the dining room and 2276 is under Shore Excursions in the lobby. There is no access to the exterior from the lobby.
