Used to be called Armistice Day. November 11th every year to commemorate the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month when the WW1 armistice was signed. Later expanded to honor all veterans.

Not to rain on the parade, but as someone who served 30 years in uniform I cringe at being told "thanks for your service."

Don't "thank" me - go do something to help a veteran.  Or even better, serve in uniform yourself.

"Veterans Day" in the US become an excuse for sales of all kinds, not a day to remember the contributions of those who have served.  "Remembrance Day" as it is called in the UK is more appropriate.  In the US we have Memorial Day to honor those who gave everything in service of freedom.  I also cringe at those who say "Happy Memorial Day" or "Happy Veterans Day."  Those folks have no clue...
